Did you get the weights right on the bottom? I’ve done a couple of those and the butts were surprisingly heavier than the middle stem. I’m not mega strong so all chains are heavy to me. My process: 1. Have the crane driver position the chain ends on the pith, without you on the hook. 2. Cable down until the main hook touches the pile of chain. 3. Climbing system onto the hook/ball. 4. Cable up to get you onto the plateau and until there’s only a few feet of chain on the pile. 5. Arrange the choke (secret handshake - leg one chokes onto leg two, leg two chokes onto leg one) around the edge, cabling up/down as needed. 6. Push it all off together and it slips down over the stem like putting a heavy jumper on a child. 7. Usually only very minor wrestling to set the chains and you’re tied in to do it. Don’t let the crane driver slew or boom you around. He’ll lose the position over the pith.

There are tree friction devices that work like a Petzl STOP. They look fairly good for up-tree use.

America is dreadful for that. Gun stuff is often American and often imperial. I can tolerate the tradition on lever guns etc but for modern stuff, bloody modernise. And more to the point, bloody standardise. Especially with things that are likely to be used in a pinch, where not being able to fix it because you don't have some minority allen keys could be a serious problem. Oh I don't know. Like you've got a gun out of action while you're being shot at or you're up a mountain in the middle of the night, trying to not drop a patient on a sharp rock.

When I was about 8, I was obsessed with grappling hooks after seeing The Living Daylights. I tied various bits of scrap metal found in fields (bits off ploughs probably) to washing line to swing around from trees. My mate, Robbie had a go and the pointy triangle of rusty steel came loose and hit him in the head. Now I think about it, thank christ he didn’t die. No no. Don’t be so conciliatory. A minute ago I deserved all the boot on the face I got because I didn’t want to pick the boot colour. Let’s go the other way. I don’t want to be ruled by anyone so I’m not going to cross a box saying I do. It’s an illusion of choice. You can pick red or blue. Makes no odds. You still get ruled.

Out of interest, what will your line of persuasion be? I’m certainly always on the lookout for ways to convince people to not do stupid things.

I keep a few stock lines for the worst of these offenders. “Have you tried that new Oregon VXL?” “Managed to make one of those Husky combicans last more than a month yet?” etc I target football fans similarly. “Rashford’s well down on pace this season.” “Well if they will play so wide in the centre, what do they expect?!” ”Great discipline but doesn’t see a lot of gaps.” And so on. No idea whether any of it’s true but in probably about ten years of interrupting people wanking on about football like tragically overlooked experts, I’ve never been met with anything but wholehearted agreement.
