I lent my climbing kit to a mate so that he could go and earn £250 on a piss easy takedown. Meanwhile, I pruned an apple tree while kicking a ball for a collie for £60 and dinner. I'm not sure I'm a very good businessman.

Or use a tarp, roll it up and grab it like a log. Bit floppy poking it into the back of the van but I'm sure he'll have a technique for that.

For the cost of one fencepost and two pegs, just try it. This will spur me on to trying it too. Someone of this parish suggested similar a while ago. Not needed one yet but I have a spare fencepost so why not. Other thoughts: use more bags and fill them less; grab the bags like Dan said.

Grabbing a six foot long bit of whatever that stores piss easily and can be put into action in ten seconds as opposed to ten minutes is enough reason. 1.5 of weak stuff. I'm trying to give up. It's not working.

Yep and for heavier loads the boom swiveling and you needing to drop it quickly would become a consideration. What's a bag of rakings though? 50kg? You can always start with an 8' post and cut it down until it's right.

Boring, sober answer but probably just a boom that you grab. Something like 3x3 steel box with a couple of pins in the end to prevent bag loops sliding either way. Test theory with fencepost. Or just use a fencepost.

Put some gunnii in next to the newly planted ones and observe growth side by side? It's a reliable grower and coppicer in the UK.

Interested to see whether the euc wins in the long run. Like it might yield 100kg in year 10 but not regrow where a native coppicer could yield 50kg in year 10 and then 50kg in years 20, 30, 40, 50 etc. Likewise 50% of the eucs could die from frost where 90% of willow survives. Have you got numbers?

Tell me about it. I do almost exclusively big stuff but am getting to the point where three little birches and finish for a late lunch appeals more. What I want and what the economy may grant me might well be different though.

Pretty much anyone can do a 2-300 quid job though, 30’ birch takedown sort of things. Ladder, a few straps, Makita battery saw, brash away in a mate’s panel van, logs on the kerb.
