At one time you could get some stuff called PEG polyethylene glycol and this replace the water in the wood with the PEG don't know if its still available or suitable Anybody else ever used it

I have never had any problems using wire wool on outdoor furniture.Maybe its because I always use it soaked in oil

try a fine grade wire wool 0000 and work it in with the oil then wipe off the excess straight away you would be better off using OSMO exterior oil,but again wipe off the excess
