  1. no pop on this site all sitka DF and a few scotts pine all larch has gone but there is some fantastic big and i mean big mature oaks and beech big straight 3.5-4.5 diameter and approx 40-60ft poles been there for a couple of hundred years or more i would say,
  2. Thanks Mark and yes sitka but not that old really for size of tree, theres 2 more you can see in photo behind this one all simulare size and site was planted in 1957 by Bryant & May ? does that name ring any bells ? MATCHES
  3. yes got some big beech edge trees to fell in febuary and about 6 of them are 5ft+ diameter at the bottom,
  4. love them old logging films theres another one in BC guy stood on his spikes tacking tops of the big redwoods with a axe about 200 ft, the tops are bigger than most trees in the UK,
  5. i will put you right on this one, some answers are nearly there but not quite , the cut in the centre of the hinge is called a heart cut and i cant believe no one has said that, the whole idea of the cut is it allows you to fell large trees with smaller saws than needed, tree was just over 4ft across saw used stihl ms461 with 20" bar so tree diameter more than twice the bar length, so take the middle out the tree first and the bore in on one side and then sweep round putting wedges in as you go round ,and it all so allows me to have one side of the hinge bigger than the other side and this would be used in a situation where a tree have a lot more weight on one side ehan the other and i would have a bigger hinge on the side with least weight on to compensate the pull that would be created by the excess weight on oppositt side, dont know if you can zoom in on photo but one side of the hinge is about 3" and the other is about 4.5" hope this explaines it ?,

  8. yep all the time,,,NO,,, had a shit time last week on some small birch but aint felled any small trees for a while either all wind blown or big standing spruce, If your man put the back cut below the gob cut on his accesment that would be an instant NPTC fail so how did he get a ticket, ???.

  10. did a heavy reduction today ? logs cut 6 x 2.5 O/S, 4 x 3.7mtr sawlog and 5 x 3mtr chip + top, tree was 1.24 mtr across at the bottom so pretty big for UK,

  13. stihl expert, vented on the top, good ear protection,good view through the fine mesh visor had several helmets in the past and this is the best one so fare on the second one now ,
  14. i think i would be looking at the hinges on the cab, we have had a hot summer and lubrication seems to dry up/disappear then we get it wet for a while and corrosion sets in, our log trailer we norrmally grease once a week this summer every other day and then it took several more pumps than normall, on your cabstar there should be a grease point on the hinges WD first get it moving then grease as you should be doing, if that dont work your back to square one, we had a ford cargo years ago and in summer the cab seemed harder to lift and the above was the problem, hope this helps you out,
  15. most motor factor supplies ie the ones that go to garages with spare parts in small vans stock 1,8 mtr lengths of exhaust pipe in various diameters for repairs, had a few in the past and only about £10 a length would that not do your job ?

You say you cant rely on subcontractor/cash in hand, i work with several arb crews along with my own work, 3 of them i get 2-3 wk notice off and occasionally less but one guy who proberbaly wants me the most i do the least work with, reason why he has this nasty habbit of ringing me and asking what you doing tomorrow tusday and wednesday so i just say working then he asks if i can alter things to accomadate him answer is no, then i ask him how long has he known about this job and it generally 2-3 wk so i have asked him and told him why cant he give me more than 24 hrs notice if he has known for a couple of wks so basically i have told him if he cant plan 2 wk in addvance and give me 2 wk notice not to ring me,the other 3 crews i have had to cancell one day in what 5 years due to a funeral , and yes NPTC training for chipper saw hedge cutter pole saw etc and all PPE will have to be provided plus employee liabilaty along with other things, personally i would wait till after this brexit deal goes through (if it ever does) as if some thing happens thats not forcast to happen and we go in to another reccession it may cost you quite a bit to get rid of some one i would mudell on for now till the future looks a bit clearer,

  23. i know it pisses you off when you think you are working for some one that some one else says ,oh hes as sound as a pound, but what they failed to tell you is they are as tight as a ducks arse, iv had it several times last one was a log customer, made a brew when got there and talked about getting another load off me but when he went to get money, he couldnt find it as Mrs must of took it so he went for check book and Mrs had taken that as well, i will drop it off for you he told me, 3 wk later still no payment, so rang him and he hung up after i told him who i was, about 4 months later i see this volvo parked up in a car park at a forest enterance, i slam on and just roll back BASC and a dog is for life sticker in back window thats Barrys i thought and if its got a dent n scrape on NS front wing its definatly his, picked bins up and had a scan up track and about 4-500 mtrs up track there is a guy walking up the hill with his springers its Barry i watched him till he went out of sight had a good look around no other cars or people about 45 seconds later 4 deflating tyres on his volvo and to replace them would be more than £80, i would take his £200 and wait several months and get your revenge and satisfaction some other way that would hurt him more in the pocket than you asked for, i so Barrys car about 3 wks after on a super market car park with 4 new tyres on it and as i was going in he was coming out and i asked him for my £80 he got his wallet out and gave me what paper money he had £55 all he could say was i forgot all about that and then he asked me if i would deliver him some more, i reminded him about hanging up on me and me having to waiting near on 12 mth for only part payment go fuck yourself,
  24. i know a guy up in north yorks with 3/4 brand new 260s in the boxes he aquired them several years ago when a dealer retired and the lucky basket got them at cost, will he sell me one NO he wont,
  25. when you bought them did you not get a small jar of meindl boot care (dubin/wax) in the box with them ? if not its some sort of dubin or neatsfoot oil which is a oil that is applied to horses hooves to make em shine my last pair of boots now 5 year old where always done with neatsfoot oil and have lasted well, started to fall apart inside now but still wearing them and the soles still have good tread on but its forestry work so all ways on the soft stuff and not tarmac,
