Interesting point, now you mention it we have a lot of Pheasants left and not seen any young this year so far and we all so have about 800 ducks left which i have seen some sitting on eggs in various places but i have not seen any young ducks either even tho most have hatched, i am sure there will be some about somewhere, but last night i was watching a field that has just been covered in slurry and Rooks, Crows and Jack daws there was several hundred of them and they wont help matters at all,

If your buying a truck for work purpose,s does it really matter about the fuel if the said truck does the job its all tax deductable there will be plenty of people on here including myself who have made bad decisions when buying a truck/van to be used for work, and it all boiled down to a few MPG, worst one i ever did was buy a Leyland DAF 200 petrol it was so expensive to run i only had it 6 wk then bought what i originally wanted a Peugeot 305 1,9 diesel van and they where worlds apart, kept that for 9 year,
  3. What is there to discuss ? its Ash, its dead, and it tends to be quite dry, or is there some thing technical about it ??? Dead dry Ash just burn it,,,

I had a 54 plate l200 and that was pathetic on fuel best i ever got out of it was 29 mpg and that was on a 300 mile + round trip and mostly A roads and motorway, put a trailer behind it and it was down in to the teens, Now run a 3.2 05 plate shogun and its noticably better than the l200 even just knocking about round home, i would say average is in the region of late 20s, the big thing i found the l200 sat at 65mph was reving its nuts of at 3000rpm shogun at same speed is about 1400rpm, and the performance diffrence is miles apart l200 0-60 you need a calender and shogun gets there on a stop watch, shogun id very good to drive with plenty of toys if you like that sort of thing only thing i use is heater and radio + heated seats when its cold,,

Yes but i can put loads of other attchments on the 3 point linkage ae well, takes about 5 mins to drop trailer off and fit a 4.2 tonne winch, the tractor has many uses as apposed to just one job like the log bullet, i was working along side a log bullet ealier in the year and i was moving more timber out but it was over a mile extraction to stacking point, and tractor much faster once on the tarmac drive,
  6. And if i remember right the ladder framed one that was for sale just after i built mine was supplied by Rytec at Malton in North yorkshire

A ladder designed chassis would be far more stronger and would have a lot less flex in it due to design, but bear in mind the one i have was originally built for behind a quad but due to the terrain we was working on the trailer spent more time on its side than right end up due to width only being 1.2mtr wide, we devised a way of having the width adjustable from 1,2mtr out to 1.5mtr so it could work behind both quad and tractor, if i was going to make another it would definatly be a ladder frame tho, and the small wheels seem to travel fine over most stuff but sometimes it pays to just pay that extra bit of attension to where your going and pick your rout in and out,

I would not be that bothered about the size of the wheels as they are quite tough and capable, we have had a trailer that we built and the only thing wrong was it should of been a ladder frame and not a single spine as in your photo, and you know what life is like, it can be very cruel at times as about a month after we built ours a ladder framed one croped up for sale for a bit less than what ours cost to build, We have had ours about ten years now and it has had some abuse in that time, the crane on ours is not fantastic by a long way but it does the job, and from some later reserch and viewing and use of other smaller cranes the country cranes supplied by Riko and the Farma cranes seem to be miles ahead of the other manufactures of small cranes but you get what you pay for and that goes for the timber grab as well, If you could find some one who owns one of the trailers in your photo or better still if they have a demo one you could have for a few days do it ,
  9. And the council who you pay your council tax and business rates to still sent you a letter !! arse and elbow come to mind here, mind you i think most people in these organisations cant be arsed to do much and if it dont jump up and hit them in the face they cant find it,,

  12. I work all times of day, so the post earlier but had people to ring and emails to send, just been and made a brew and now about to start 3-4hrs of homework for a DEFRA project, then got a big birthday bash tomorrow with Jelly n custard cant wait,,,

  14. Used to get up there on to loch Awe and Etive a fair bit but never after mid May, simply for the reason you describe ,Midges, it was not nice at all, once went to Awe in mid June and went home after 36hrs,

As for cost it should not really matter as the crane needs to be right, next thing the extension will be stuck in and be a right ba-tard to get out, I bought a hydraulic pump for a Kubota L3250 compact tractor not long since and nearly had a heart attack when he told me was over £700 + VAT as its only the size of half a house brick and not much good for our job with out it,

BRM Brian Robinson Machinery Northallerton north Yorkshire, i think either do or did deal and import Junkari trailers and chippers, if they have a relationship with Junkari and given the times we are in i would think it would be far quicker and easier to buy through a established dealer, from what you say after removing grab and disconnecting the ram the slide should just pull out with little effort and then replace new one sounds easy and it could be but i bet that part costs you some ???,

Get the word out there that your looking for some one else to work with you as a 3 man team, if the guy you have working with you hears about it he just may buck his ideas up, i once was in a very simulare situation and i told the lad working with us that we where not working friday as i had 5 lads to interview, but un be known to him i had a subby lad lined up for monday onwards for several wk, but when monday came there seemed to be a bit more go about the lad and that week he never moaned or asked what time we where going home, after this he never missed a day or asked to go home early or start late for near on a month, you can not run a business with unreliable staff it just dont work, you need things to mend up and have good reliable staff its a pain in the arse and finding good reliable lads today is getting harder as not many want to get there hands dirty, Good luck,,

Yes the guy who owns it now has done for 30 yrs or more but he is now in his 70s and only uses it part time, and it will last a lot longer yet but Its like every thing from that era it was vastly over engineered and built to last, i have a Mcconell towable saw bench with twin cylinder Petter diesel on it and according to engine number it was built in April 1953, some say its a dangerous looking thing but its only as dangerous as the oparator using it, it gets bearings greased up now n then along with a oil change, and i cut a hell of a lot of firewood on that saw and i expect it to out last me, we can not compare any thing that is built today to any thing from that engineering era of the 2 decades that followed WW2,
  19. If it is the seals ? But sorry i agree with others, just go and buy a new saw and you will have a few years use out of it then, replacing crank seals in a saw of that size n cost its not a done thing i would say and far better buying new saw,

That saw at the time when new would be the smallest mill available from Stenner, it is what i would say how it was supplied all them years ago from the factory, ours was a different set up but a much bigger saw and driven bed, the drive set up would be by PTO shaft possibly from a gear box with dog clutch, these saws where very common in the UK back in the 50s/60s/70s/80s as every estate had there own sawmill for cutting timber for there own use, but as time has gone on sawmills have become automated and are so productive today with zero waste as a result, a sawmill we send sawlogs to put about 100-120 tonne a day through there,s, But can i just remind some of you the stenner saw in question has a bit of age about it and when we look back engineering at this time was at the top of its game and most items from this era where vastly over engineered and thats why its still here, the saw i worked with is still milling timber today ok not every day but it will be cutting 20 tonne a week on a part time basis,

I agree with you on this 5-10 k to move it ? these machines are very very capable machines of cutting good volumes of timber in a short time, i worked on one for 3 years, and look at the speed of a wood mizer compared to that saw ? race horse and donkey come to mind here, cost of blades well just look at them one is very industrial and the other a more hobby /homeowner blade, A mate of mine has just installed a Laimet 120, he put the concrete slab down on the friday, went with 2 lads on the monday to start the dismantle all back in his yard and installed and cutting wood by friday, and thats a lot more complicated machine than the Stenner but his was a long way from £1500, If that was not far from me i would be thinking about that as it aint expensive and i am 100% sure i could make good money with that at the moment given the sawn timber shortage in the UK at present,

Looking at it i would say its a 60s 70s machine and the bed is push through manually but i think with a bit of thought it could be converted to hydraulic drive, i used to work on one in late 70s early 80s but it was a much bigger machine than this one, but that was driven bed from new, it looks a handy sized mill to me and if my memory serves me right the only thing that went wrong with ours was a electric motor burnt out ,but this one is diesel powered so i would think its ok, the seller says up n running and can demo, at £1500 i dont think its dear and if you could get the logs to put through it you would get your money back in little time, the last job i was involved in when i worked on the mill was cutting about 8500 6ft 6x3 posts and about 25.000 12ft rails for the fencing along the M55 from Preston to Blackpool,
  23. There will be belts on the bay for that as there is a company that i use for odd ball belts, just measure the outside length of the belt, drop down box on add with length and v width n depth, just select and will be generally be there 2 days later,

  25. If what he says he has ticket wise is right he is worth 120 + as there aint that many guys about with 34&35 and if he has plenty of expieriance in wind blown and does it with out his arse going worth more than the 120 every day,
