  2. Have not used the above for some months but I find the saw now starts on choke on full revs, blowing white smoke. On engaging the throttle it dies down and idles normally. Any help would be appreciated.

    Stihl 170

    I have the above about 3 years old. Recently been blowing white smoke and black oil through muffler and stopping. Cleaned carb and muffler. I noticed that there are no carb nor muffler gaskets on this model. Is this correct please?. Will the situation become better if I fit the appropriate gaskets?. Thanks everybody for reading.

  6. I have a cheapo bought in Lidl and it has worked well for a couple of years. However recently after a few minutes use the grinding wheel makes an abnormal vibrating sound. I have cleaned everything out, turned wheel around but no change. This is the second wheel I have used and there appears plenty of life left in it. Any advice will be appreciated.
  7. Thanks for that. The saw is a friend’s that had not been used for many years and my pal recently tried to start it but it would not run. It was full of old fuel which I dumped and I then I cleaned the carb ( Warlbro HDA 119 ) and fitted a new kit. To get the carb off you have to dismantle the handle which is why I thought it might be something to do with the throttle cable or because of the potch in getting the carb off there might be a leak in the boot area.
  8. Just fitted carb kit as I was unable to adjust carb properly. Now starts first time but will not come down from high rev.. Have I fitted throttle cable wrong or is there an air leak?. Any help will be appreciated . An old model but little used.

  10. Just been given this saw which is now running quite well after ditching old fuel and giving it a wash and brush up. There doesn’t seem any access to an arrestor screen or perhaps no arrestor screen. Can any of my more learned friends fill me in on this please?
  11. I have sent an email to Stihl about this problem and I am aware of the YouTube listings. It seems a pretty inherent problem. Stihl should put a caution on their saws which use this linkage. I don’t expect anything by way of a successful result but will keep you posted.
  12. Has anybody had problems with small Stihls eg 180, 170 in not being able to switch them off. In other words, the O position fails to action. I know what the problem is in that the plastic switch bar unseats itself so that the metal spring is unable to make the appropriate connection to stop the engine. This switch arrangement is on quite a few models and Stihl must be aware of it being a design fault and also a safety issue but still must sell these chainsaws in their thousands without seemingly not bothering to modify the system. Would be happy to learn of your experiences.
  13. Any of you boys know the material that the above is made from?. It seems to be the the same stuff on the Mac and Poulan air filters. Thanks.
  14. I have a number of Stihl saws but bought the above as a light use alternative. I have found the air filter system to be totally useless and after very light use have cleaned out the carb which was full of crap. Is this something which other members have found and can anyone suggest a remedy?
