Dont know if many of you lads have seen this but it looks very very serious to me, the wild fires in the Tiger forest in Russia which if i recall right is the worlds biggest forest have now been burning for over a month now destroying every thing in its path, the fire is now bigger than the rest of the fires put together that are burning across America, Canada, Greece and Turkey, the report i have just seen says its going to have a massive knock on affect world wide with timber prices as the Tiger forest produces 100s of 1000s of tonnes of timber a year, the fire has now got to the stage where it is way out of control and with what ever they do to contain it just seems to be a waste of time,,,

Timber crane mounted hydraulic winch
spuddog0507 replied to KH1's topic in Forestry and Woodland management
I dont know about being pricey at just over a grand for whats in it ? i would not like to try and make one for that , i think for what they are and the time and effort you would save its a bargain, we had some logs that we could not get tractor and trailer near to load and i am just glad there was not many of them as we chained then and dragged them with crane, stop shorten chain and repeat till near enough to load, it seemed to take ages to move about a dozen logs, seen one of these winches working on a small forwarder and it worked very well and after speaking to the owner about it i was sold on the idea, lucky enough i have not been in that situation again since but i would not hesitate to purchase one if i was ever there again, -
we had a job pruning some trees back that belonged to a nursing home but where taking over the residential garden next door, the lad who was working with us that day came round the back of the property with a couple of saws and the client said to him, all right Winston,, this bloke calls every one Winston by the way, the said lad Stephen dissapeared and was sat in the truck he had taken real offence to being called Winston and asked if he could go home, talked him to stopping for the day eventually; I dont think this lad would of lasted one brew time in that Paddy hut back in the early 80s, Something has gone sadly sadly wrong some where ??? I so a post on FB a few wk back that was about growing up in the 70s and it read, We spent our days looking for frogs n shit like that,, todays Snowflake generations kids spend there days looking for a WiFi signal !!!!

Yep happy happy days for us for sure, We worked on 5 Wimpey sites around the Northwest, skipping from site to site for a month or so on each site turfing the gardens and seeding the recreation areas along with tree panting in the winter, We did one at Radcliff near Bury, 2 small estates in Poulton which one of was near the TVR factory, a massive one at Sharples hall at Bolton and i think that one was about 800 houses then the last one was at Warrington which was not that big but it later became the set for the channel 4 soap Brookside, Only lad a kept in touch with was a chippy called Carl from Poulton and unfortunatly he got killed in a RTA on the M62 while traveling to a site in Bradistan, We where shit up every day and piss wet through many a day but we just got on with it and never moaned, we used to do prep work mom/tus/wed and then we got a arctic load of turf on a thursday morning and get all down by late friday aft then home when finished, great times and some times i wish i could turn the clock back,,,,
-
Your not a undertaker by any chance are you ? 😂😂
-
Back to the Wimpey sites, we where mainly 16/17 years olds at the time and to be sat in the Paddy hut at brew time we got ripped to bits 3 times a day every day but we stuck it out for 3 years till the site was finished, F - - - - - g good times tho,
-
It is , i worked on some Wimpey sites around the Northwest in the early 80s, loads of Irish lads on them sites back then but it was enjoyable to go to work,

FFS some one get this guy a coconut or he might be happier with a goldfish,, mind you he might moan about that as well, Our working days are full of shitty snied comments aimed at each other, there is no offence in any of it but it just makes for a better working day in my eyes, Over the years i have worked with all age groups of people and by far the better ones to work with where the older guys who had worked on building sites and road building as there was never a dull moment in the day working with these guys, some of todays younger generation just seem so boring and make a day feel like a week,

Price of larch, Douglas Fir & Spruce
spuddog0507 replied to Welshsteve's topic in Forestry and Woodland management
You have got a good deal there, and here,s me struggling to find anything at the moment, Bio mass has F - - - - d it up round us as Jenkinsons and stobarts seem to be just buying it all up before its felled, even the small parcells so its become hard off late to source out, Rough keeps asking for Larch and DF but nothing to sell him, your deal is sweet so look after it and this time next Rodney we will be ,,,,,, -

All timber has been at all time high of late but it has started to drop a little lately for the very same reason your asking and now most mills are near full capacity, there has been a few people i know of who have jumped on the band wagon with timber this last 18 mth, some have been lucky and got there felling licence granted back when timber prices where on the rise to say £75-80 tonne but time they got the timber to roadside it was at £110 tonne, so i think you may of mist the boat this time but it may drop say £25-30 a tonne and hold steady for another 6 monthes or so like it did in 2012/2013,, timber needs to cut to the correct lenghs and in the right stack at roadside, O/S, 4.9 3.7 3.1 mtr saw logs 2.5 pallet wood 2.2 strainer,s 1.9 bars and then chip/firewood, But felling lience first or you will be getting a visit from the FC, -
I know how you feel on that one, i am on 5 tanks now, I went and looked at a infected Larch job about 6 wk ago on some very steep banks, My initial thoughts where there is some cracking timber in here and then looking round and uphill i thought F - - K this its going to be very hard work in here with loads of winch work, later in the day i was talking to the keeper and he said there had been about 5 contractors looked at it and all walked away, I dont know if Bally was one of them but i will find out in the near future,,

I haven,t been in the shop for about 18mth and on the odd visit Dick would of been on the counter and i used to ask him what he was doing behind there as i thought you would be at home counting all your money again, he just used to say well that dont take me so long ,,
-
There is that on the Standing estate that was supposed to be about 800 houses, seen them in front of the shop and at first i thought Dick was having them built but nowt to do with him, its happening every where our doctors that was built in mid 90s was forcast to be good till 2055 but its maxed out now, Just heard of a proposed deveolpment that starts at Hampson green (junction where you come off the M6 for the uni at lancaster) and it goes all the way to the other M6 junction where the river Lune is it consists of 9185 houses a shopping presinct, doctors, dentist, social club , pubs ,resteraunts, gyme, and 2 schools etc, god knows where all the top water is going to go as there is only one small river the Conder and that floods the village of Galgate quit often, then where is the water supply to come from e as i dont know of any new ress,s being built, its getting to the stage where something is going to give and it will end up as another massive recession ?
-
Ye they have gone mad this last 18mth, got a property at Slaidburn thats going to be on the market shortly and had a call last wk from a estate agent begging for it to be put up for sale, as it was valued 10mth ago and now there saying at least 20% more that the original valuation, not bad that ,,

I believe she has gone back Manchester way now ? so we could be safe once more 😂😂

Worked for quit a few over the years in and around the fylde (Blaclpool lytham ) First one was Les Dawson and i dont need to say much about what he was like to work for, he just made a joke out of any thing we did or said, top bloke, second was Little Mo out of the Rolly pollys who was good friends with Les Dawson and again a total sream to work for , third was Sid Little again a good bloke to work for, all these 3 came from being recomended by Les Dawson, Forth was Brian London who has sadly just past away, Brian was a heavey weight boxer back in the 60s and vey interesting bloke, he used to bring us a bacon butty and a brew out every morning about 10,15am and sit with us telling us about some of the fights he had with some big names over his career, We did a a landscaping job in the early 80s for a developer that was a bit of a rush job but unknown to us this was to be the set for the chanel 4 soap Brookside, Then later on in the late 90s early 2000s we used to go in to a pub on a sat aft after shooting and some one moved in to the village and on a sat aft about 5 ish she would come in and hers was the only voice we could hear, so it was sup up n fook off for us and move on and that was her who played Jannic Battersby in Coronation street, very loud,,

Nice boards, nice bured Oak of that size 5,5mtr x 1 mtr i would think you could sell for the same price ? others may say different ? I think you and me are in a simulare situation at present, i am dealing with a late elderly relatives estate at the moment and i have a house full of old brown furniture that will be from the late 1800s early 1900s and its worth next to nothing, Why because its not fashionable at the moment and prices have fallen by 80% in last 10yrs so thats tough shit for use, your timber is very simular not fashionable and out of favour as compared to 30-40yrs ago, i suppose your timber is a bit on the lines of Ivory,, people have now woken up to the destruction that has been caused and is still being done ileagally both with timber and Ivory so people dont want to buy it and encorage more destruction, these are just my thoughts personally i would be doing a bit of homework on this timber as some will now be illeagal i would find a simular timber that is leagal and still imported and be calling it that and not what it is ? price wise i would be looking in to as well as your original price is around the 4k a cube ?
-
Think i will agree with that, been diverted through Livingston a few times on our way to Lomond when the M8 was closed due to RTA not been near it for 10+ yrs now may of changed ?

When ever trying to sell anything over the internet photos are a must and the better the photos are the better your chance of a sale and the more photos the better, Personally i think you might be struggling to sell at the price your asking due to the restictions now in place on the felling and exporting of some of these timbers, people are now starting to take note of what has happened and is still happening illeagaly to these trees and dont want to encourage any more ileagal destruction, i think to get good money for this timber you would need to supply the dated paper work on all importation and sale details, its ok saying its got the import date stamped on it but that could of been put on a few wk ago ?, some of this timber i know is very nice timber and back when i started work (1980) these timbers where widely available but unfortunatly have fallen way out of fashion, for the price your asking for this timber if we compare it to something that we can get hold of today and that is in fashion at present. like some burred Oak or Elm of that size i am 99% sure you would be sat there thinking i wish i had more of that, Photos on the other hand may sell your African hardwood as there is plenty of people above who have asked for photos but non as yet get the photos on and i wish you luck with it,

Self employed or cards in, where in the country, what kit have you got, are you up to speed with the job, loads of questions to be asked on this subject and as Kevin above as said the only person who can really answer this is who ever is paying you, i have had several dozen climbers over the years, some i have thought £50 a day was to much and others i have paid £150 and more but i would of paid more for one or two of them,

This sounds very much like the way i was treated by some one i subbed to in the mid 80s and there is only so many times you can be arsed about, all i did was i found myself 2 days a week with some one else that where set in stone for thur/fri then there was the odd wk when i had a few days of my own so that wk was full, the original guy i subbed to was now chasing me, he then asked me for Mon-Wed for next 4 wks at least, this didnt happen as in the 3rd wk i only worked the monday for him as he cancelled tus/wed, i later found out he had gone to the Ovel to watch cricket for 3 days, the wk after i only did the mon with him and when i told him i was else where for rest of the wk he was not happy and i just threw it back at him what he had done the wk before after asking me for 3 days for 4 wk, this then encouraged me to look for other people to work with and it soon came to the point where i was working 6 days a wk, so i know where you are coming from and there is only you who can sort this out but this problem is one of the downfalls of being self employed and relying on some one else to supply you with work,,,
