  1. Nice looking saw. Can I ask where you got it imported from? I am after a Dolmar 6400 but not sure where to look.
  2. I have one of these: Tirfor T516 winch with 20m cable | F R Jones and Son Great bit of kit. I use it almost everyday in the woods. It is heavy! T32 one will be overkill i reckon. Remember the rated strength is lift not pull. I use a snatch block if I want to get a bigger pull on it. Doubled up its 3.2 ton so could lift my land rover 110 off the floor!
  3. Got myself an echo 280wes. Had it in the woods cutting hazel coppice today. First impressions are good. I mean it is way less powered / slower than my 346 but boy is it light! To be honest I had a hard time taking it seriously it is so light . I feels like a toy! Anyway it did well. I have put a Oregon 91VXL chain on it but still not the smoothest. I might be tempted to put a smaller bar on it. A carving bar looks like an option but is it really going to work for coppice / small tree felling? Or are they only for carving?
  4. Lycetts | Insurance | Tree Surgery, Arboricultural And Forestry Insurance I pay less than £1200 including PI but my turn over is small.
  5. It is a complicated subject but farmers are allowed to erect a barn under certain circumstances. It is called permitted development: Farm buildings: Know your Permitted Development Rights - 3/15/2008 - Farmers Weekly Trouble is you need 12 acres or more and the building has to be for farming so timber storage is out. There are also similar rights for forestry buildings: Wodland Planning System But even if you planted up the 1.5 acres with trees you are going to struggle to make the case for a barn. So if you wanted to build a barn to store timber you are going to have to apply for full planning which the council are very unlikely to grant. Hope this helps!
  6. I also tried to contact them and they did not reply. My question is will there be anything extra to pay at customs as it is shipped from Italy?
  7. I went for this: Makita BHP452RFW 18v LXT Combination Drill Best bit of kit I own!
  8. Been working today in a woodland that has 100's of young elm. All seem healthy and some are getting on in size. Only doubt I have is could they all be wych elm? Is there a simple way to tell the wych and field elm apart?
  9. Hornbeam, Lime or Wild Cherry are all good coppice trees and might be useful down the line. Also if you have any wet areas Alder is good coppice and firewood.
  10. What was it like on fuel? One of the reasons I might get one is I run my saws on aspen and need to cut the fuel bill! The 2012 model 280wes is supposed to be 30% more efficient than the old model. I am guessing that is why you can run it out of bar oil on the max setting.
  11. Norfolk Wildlife Trust - Ash Dieback disease found in NWT Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe Here we go......
  12. Yes there numbering system is plain daft. The WES models seem to differ from the ES models? So this is the model I was looking at: [30007-english]CS-351WES | ECHO global Which seems to have a new model here: [30011-english]CS-360WES | ECHO global But is not the same model as this one: [30014-english]CS-352ES | ECHO global The 351/360 model seems to have pretty good power to weight? Anyone had a go with one?
  13. Chainsaw for pruning ECHO CS 351 WES professional | eBay Will there be extra to pay at customs if I order from Italy?
  14. Do you know if there is a healthier alternative to Glyphosate that is effective at killing stumps?
  15. Replant grants are controlled by the Forestry Commission. You need to contact your local office and they will talk you through the options.
  16. Hi The big job I had planned to use the AGT on did not happen but I am hoping to have it in the woods shortly. I have had it out on a couple of small jobs and it has done well. It fits on my ifor tipping trailer which is great. If I had the cash I would change the tyres to the 280/70R18 recommended here. The turf tyres seem to just spin when it hits deep mud. The model I have has no synchro on the gears which I though might be problem but is actually pretty easy to work with. Just pick a gear and go! No problems with reliabilty or starting. Everything is solidly built and parts back up / support from RIKO seems good.
  17. Very poor year for fruit trees. Have 6 apples trees in the garden and hardly a fruit on them. Lots of people around here saying the same thing. We had a very cold snap just as the blossom came out and then a very wet summer.
  18. I am pretty sure PPE jackets don't have any protection in the arms. It is usually just across the shoulders and chest so would not have helped your friend. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.
  19. There is a picture of layering here: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/rin259.pdf/$FILE/rin259.pdf Basically shoots are bent over and put in contact with the ground. They then grow roots and sprout. After a year or so you can cut the shoot from the parent tree and they will grow on by themselves. Its a bit like runners from a strawberry plant. Personally I don't bother with pegging the layer. I bend over a nice long shoot, sharpen the end with my billhook and push it deep into the ground. I then half cut the shoot near the base to stop it trying to stand up again. Takes about 30 seconds and seems to work well enough.
  20. Sounds perfect! Alder likes wet ground, coppices really well and makes good firewood. Coppice every 10-15 years for a supply of firewood other than that let nature do its thing!
  21. Give Martin a call: Woodfuel Wales - your one-stop source for wood fuel information. Some prices here: Treenergy.net - Wood Pellets Full Pallet
  22. I reckon these are the cheapest trousers out there at the moment: Oregon Yukon chainsaw trousers Type A | F R Jones and Son
  23. Very nice! You had a problems getting hold of spare parts for the Holder? I have read they are hard to source now. Is it true?
  24. CHAMP A210 SAND BIKE OFF ROAD 2 WHEELED ATV TYRES FULL SIZE NOT RAPTOR LTR TRI-Z | eBay
  25. This is covered by permitted development: Woodland Planning Legislation Wodland Planning System You do not need planning permission but need to complete a '28 day prior notification' They key is the building must be for 'forestry' purposes. If you are actively managing your 6 acres then this should not be a problem. Bringing in wood from other sites is another matter. Also converting wood to a product like planks / fence posts can be a problem so avoid mentioning that. I would say it was for storing tools and equipment rather than stacking wood. (What you use it for once it is up is another matter!) The type of building pole barn / steel barn should not be an issue. The council are more worried about it being converted into a house so anything that is purely functional should tick the box.
