  1. Hi Guys. Just looked Pholiota Squarroas up. Looks like a good match to me. Cheers. Also looks to be pretty benign? The tree appears healthy. I think it is an old hedge row tree and has swallowed the stone base of the hedge as its grown.
  2. Out for a walk and spotted this: Its on one of my favorite trees. A big ash in the field behind my house. To my totally untrained eye it looked a bit Honey Fungus like. Then again I couldn't find any Honey Fungus pictures quite the same. What do you reckon?
  3. Cool thanks. Sounds like I should be OK. Looking forward to using the full chisel. Only used semi before.
  4. Hi All Walked into a shop today and picked up a spare chain for my 346xp. Was not really thinking straight I just asked for full chisel .325. Anyway got the box home and was surprised to see it was Stihl chain. I presumed I would get Husqvarna or Oregon chain. Anyway I am guessing it is rapid super or something like that? It has the number 5 on the drive link and 325 on the cutter so looks like it will fit the 346xp. Does anyone else use this combination? With it being Stihl chain does it make any difference to sharpening? Can I still use my husqvarna roller sharpening gizmo? Cheers
  5. No but this one is: Joce Metal t/a The Irony O'it - Buckingham Woodstation Has anyone every used one?
  6. Great thanks. I had not considered that there would be a height restriction.
  7. Hi Can anyone recommend an insurance company that covers coppice work / charcoal making / woodland management / forestry. I am trying to get a quote from my local NFU but they are struggling to understand what I do. Their big concern is if I climb trees at work. I don't - but I don't want to be excluded from it either. Cheers
  8. A tipping Ifor with hiab.. 14 foot ifor williams tipping trailer with hiab | eBay I wonder what the unladen weight is?
  9. One for a quad: Logic ATV / Quad Timber Trailer | eBay And is this a Riko fast tow one? Forestry/Forwarding Trailer, Flat Bed, Hiab Crane, | eBay With only 5 feedback and such a low starting bid is the fast tow a little too good to be true?
  10. Have you looked at Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative? I have a cheap bike from their 'revolution' range which has proved to be superb value for money. What about this one: Revolution Cuillin Pro '11 (was £449.99 Then £382.49) (£369.99)
  11. Thank you. I will see if I can track down a copy.
  12. Ok Thanks Guys. Sounds like there is no easy answer. I shall just have to get out in the woods with a tape measure! If found this: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/timbervolume.pdf/$FILE/timbervolume.pdf Will it do for measuring tree volume? Still going to be a tricky with multi stemmed coppice.
  13. Hi Does anyone on here supply Firewood or Charcoal into BioRegional? BioRegional - HomeGrown - for better and greener barbecues and home fires I am looking at wholesale outlets for charcoal and firewood and wondering if their model is worth while for the supplier?
  14. Getting your own kit is a good idea. If you lift the chain from the bar there will be a little number stamped on the drive link of the chain. In your case it should say 25. This is H25 husqvarna chain: H25 .325" 1,5 mm - Chains It is actually made by Oregon and is the same as Oregon 21BPX OREGON brand 20BPX, 21BPX, 22BPX .325" chainsaw chain The Oregon guide is quite good for working out what chain / bar / sprocket you need: OREGON®: Selector Guide Don't forget sharpening the chain is just the first step. You also need to turn the bar regularly to make sure it wears evenly. And use a flat file to take off any burs or lips that form. You also have to watch the chain / bar / sprocket for wear and defects and replace if required. Cleaning the air filter is also a good idea. You also supposed to grease the clutch on the 346xp and the bar nose. Did you keep the little book that came with the 346xp? Its worth a read.
  15. Not tried one but maybe one of these kits is a good idea: Vallorbe chain sharpening kit | F R Jones and Son You need: File handle - should hold flat and round files. Flat file - dressing the bar Round files (3/16th / 4.8mm) - get pack of 12 Bar groove cleaner Also one of these: Oregon bar vice heavyduty | F R Jones and Son Also get on a course or get a pro to show you how to sharpen properly.
  16. If the 346 is new it would have come with .325 pitch chain. Get one of these: Husqvarna Roller Guide for .325 Pitch Chainsaw Chain | F R Jones and Son

  18. Thanks. I will give this a go. I would still like a rough idea of what to expect. How about asking the question a different way. Last time you priced up a hardwood clearfell how much timber did you estimate an acre?
  19. I read that somewhere but it seems a little low to me? Whats a cord weigh? Maybe 2 - 2.5 tons green wood, per acre, per year. I guess while I am getting the coppice back into rotation I will be able to take out more than this each year. But once it has all been cut I will need to only take out what is sustainable. If 1 cord a year per acre is right I am going to need a bigger wood! My target is to be able to fell 200+ tons a year to make the firewood business worth while.
  20. Hi all, I need some guesstimates for the potential yield of coppice woodland. At the moment it is all overstood mixed hardwood coppice about 6" - 8" diameter. I guess it was last cut 20+ years ago. No standards. Eventually its all coming off for firewood but I need a rough idea of how many tons an acres I am likely to get while bringing it back into rotation? It is then going into a 15 year rotation for firewood. Any idea how many tons each acre should yield after 15 years? I appreciate there is not enough info here to be accurate but very rough figures will do. Cheers

A big battery is also a good idea for when it gets cold.... Numax CXV-X 1000 Amp - Leisure Batteries - Numax Leisure Batteries

I also have a 200tdi and had one of these fitted about a month ago: AlliSport LandRover Defender 200Tdi Uprated Intercooler | eBay UK Also had it 'tuned' by Allisport. (tweaked fueling and increased turbo pressure) The difference is remarkable - loads more power and better mpg (10%) It will pay for itself in about 10 tank fulls. (As long as it does not self destruct before then!)
  23. Hi. Still trying to work out a good setup. Still thinking about an alpine tractor and an ifor williams trailer. But can I get away with out a forestry trailer? Does anyone use an ifor williams type trailer behind a tractor in the woods? Is it possible to make an ifor williams trailer better off road? I have seen some with land rover wheels. What about flotation tyres? Would it still be road legal?
  24. Hi all. I have been doing a bit of digging... Green cord wood at Roadside £30 - £40 per tonne Seasoned firewood delivered £60 - £70 per m3 1.5 - 2.5 m3 of seasoned loose logs from 1 tonne of green cord wood depending on species / moisture etc. So if we take an average of 2 m3 per tonne: 20 m3 from 10 tonnes. Every 10 tonnes of wood = £1200 of firewood @ £60 per m3 (gross) Do these numbers make sense? So how much wood can I expect to fell in a day?
  25. Hi All I am trying to write a business plan. The plan is to do practical small scale woodland management for local land owners / farmers / conservation groups. I am hoping to get paid for some work but will also be extracting wood to be sold as firewood and the small stuff would be converted to charcoal. I need to be able to justify capital spend on a small tractor, winch, trailer and log splitter. I also need to be able provide myself with a wage. I will principally be working on my own but will bring in extra bodies when required. I am trying to work out how much wood I need to fell / extract / process and sell as firewood / charcoal to be viable. To start with I am forecasting selling 1000 bags of charcoal with a profit of £3 per bag. So £3000. I know this is all a bit 'how long is a piece of string' but just need some rough figures. How much hardwood can I expect to fell / extract in a week? Presuming two cutters and a tractor. If I sell hardwood at roadside I get £30 per tonne right? What about firewood sold in bulk. If I split / stack and season how much will I get selling bulk to another firewood business? What about firewood delivered to the public? How much do the public pay for a tonne? What about costs. Does anyone have rough figures for costs of felling / extraction? How about cost of processing firewood? And delivering? What else have I missed? Cheers
