I would like to know the answer to this one as well! I know if it can carry more than 750KG it needs over run brakes. Also tyres have a speed rating - some off road tyres are are not rated to go at road speeds. -
Hi Martin I was in exactly the same position last year. Following the advice on here I bought a new 346XP with 15" bar from a local dealer - F.R.Jones were cheaper by about £30 but I wanted to support a local guy and get local support. I have run it on Aspen from new and use Veg Oil in the bar. Yes it was expensive but I have no regrets. The saw rocks! It has never let me down and other than the normal maintenance I have had not had a single problem. My advice would be get the safety gear - get the 346xp and get cutting!

Have you had a look at the AGT alpine tractors that RIKO import? They are made in Slovenia. They are supposed to be like the Carraro ones but a bit more rugged / basic and hence cheaper. They use Lombardini engines which claim to be good for 10K hours before needing a rebuild.

As far as I know there are no specific forestry grants in Wales at the moment. You need to talk to the people who hand out the RDP money in your area: RDP Sir Gâr Call us on (01267) 242 364 for further details It is a separate grant scheme than the welsh assembly / local council grants. Problem is it varies from county to county how it is spent.

Ok I think these cover your area. Some of them are forestry based but hopefully they will be a start. You also need to talk to you local council business unit as they will have grants for small businesses. Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme (FFIS) Lantra ? I know of at least one site which got planning permission to bring in and process wood. It is a rural location. They did have a right battle to get planning but they did win. I think they are restricted to eight artic loads a year.

Where are you based? Funding is often different in different parts of the UK.

But remember you can only sell 2 cube of the 5 cube you fell in each quarter. If it is all for personal use that is fine. Otherwise you need a felling license.

You can apply or the farmer. But you will be liable if you do the felling and do not have the license. I don't think it usually takes ten weeks but it does have to be on a public register for set amount of time. Best bet is to speak to your local FC office.

I bet the flotation tyres on the forwarder are not rated for road speeds. Does that matter?

Hi Tom, How much does the ferrari weigh? The reason is I asked RIKO the same question when I was looking into an alpine tractor and they did not recommend a three point crane. The tractor just does not have the weight to balance out the load when lifting. You need the trailer to provide a platform. Mind you I was looking at a very small alpine - about 1 ton and your ferrari may weigh a good bit more? -
As far as I know WEBS2 is aimed at the Woodfuel market and not forestry. So they will fund static yard based machinery like a processor or log splitter but not forestry gear like a forwarder.

You are doing the right thing - but I am not sure they will thank you for it! Isn't there something about insurance not covering a tree if you have been made aware that it is dangerous and not taken action? -
Not an expert but I have heard bats squeak.I also thought they only clicked but have heard a 'maternity roost' up close and they make a right racket!

But you can also get a driven trailer for the alpine. KRANMAN do one which runs off the tractor hydraulics. Sort of makes it 8x8? I think it only has one speed - not matched to the tractor - but I reckon you only put it on to get up the tricky slopes.

Wow that is a lot! Have you considered an alpine tractor with a forestry winch and driven trailer? If you cannot get to the wood with the trailer you can winch it out. Do you consider the purpose built forwarders to be that much better?

Hi yes that is the sort of thing. The problem is in different areas of the UK the money is allocated to different sectors. I am in North Wales and have struggled to get a grant that covered forestry. I would try here: Rural Business Development Centre If you have a farm you can get grants to diversify into another sector - such as forestry.

Most grants only chip in 50%. So you have to 'match' the other 50% with your own money. Where are you located? The grants usually come from Europe but can be different depending on where in the UK you are.

cordwood - basically trunks cut to a specific length (10'+) but not split. If you are felling over the next few weeks you should be ok but I would not fell any later than that. I have some Alder in the woodshed that was felled last summer and it is a long way off being ready to burn. I reckon another 6-12 months. If you are selling to domestic customers they will expect seasoned wood ready to burn and will not be happy with wet logs. If you want to sell bulk cordwood then yes people will buy it off you wet but will expect it to be roadside with access for an artic to pick it up.
