  1. Trouble is a snatch block that is rated to 12-15 ton WLL is going to be huge and very heavy (30+kg) Is it really practical to lug these things around in the woods? Can't you make a judgement based on the safety factor of 4:1? So your max pull on the winch - is 6 ton so double that to 12 when using a snatch block. An 8 ton WLL snatch block with a safety of 4:1 is good for 32 tons before it fails! Same with strops. They have safety factor of 7:1. So a 5 ton strop should not fail until it hits 35 ton! Wouldn't say an 8 ton snatch block and 5 ton strops be plenty for a 6 ton winch?
  2. This is more like a donation. They are not saying this film is going to make money. But Ben Law is a top guy and if they make a proper documentary about him and get it on the telly I reckon that's worth a small contribution. Its got to be better than Tales from the Wild Wood!
  3. I think this is a great idea. I was talking the other day to a forestry instructor at the local college and he was saying the same thing. Students have plenty of practice on softwood but very little on hardwoods. Another angle is the conservation side. I do most of my work for a local wildlldife trust and rather than thinning we are selective felling to promote one species or create a specific habitat. Felling a single large Sycamore amongst a load of Oak when you are not allowed to damage or fell anything else is quite a challenge. Anyway I am managing a beech plantation that would be a great place to run a hardwood thinning workshop. Its in North East Wales. If there is interest we could sort something out for the Autumn.
  4. For those of you who know about Ben Law they are trying to raise funds to make a documentary about him: Ben Law's Woodland Year by Robert Stern — Kickstarter Ben Law Woodsman Proper woodsman. I reckon it will be a good watch. I think the way it works is that you pledge your money on kickstarter but you only pay if they hit their target and the whole project goes ahead. Anyway I am in for a tenner. Anyone else?
  5. His name is Chris Hughes - Good bloke and has something to do with designing NPTC courses so really good idea to get in touch. Chainsaw, Construction, CPS Training, Courses, Qualifications, Mid Wales
  6. You wont find a better course than this: Charcoal Burning & Production Ben Law's Woodland, West Sussex 22nd March 2013. Cost £95.00 Education
  7. Cheap - stretchy and come in big sizes: Oregon Yukon chainsaw trousers Type A | F R Jones and Son

  9. Thinking of getting some as well: Choker Chains | Clark Forest : Logging Equipment What size in mm is going to work with a little 3-4 ton winch. Is 7mm strong enough?
  10. Nice job! I am working on a similar site in North Wales. We are cutting hazel coppice again for the benefit of Pearl-bordered Fritillary. More info here: Forestry Commission - Pearl-bordered fritillary
  11. Where abouts are you based? My advice is don't rush to do lots of felling. You should observe for at least 12 months so you can see the different seasons and then decide what work needs doing. Use the time to clear the rubbish and open up any paths or access you will need. Also if you are going to use a chainsaw get yourself on a course and buy some PPE. Contact local forestry commission officer and wildlife trust. Both should be happy to offer advice.
  12. Right - I dont think it is the tank vent. I had it out today and it seems fine - not blocked. I also checked the spark plug - looks to be dry and a nice light brown - gap looks OK. The fuel filter seems clean. I noticed a couple of other things when running the saw today. It seem to be OK when cold and only starts to play up after the saw gets good and hot. Once its hot it starts and idles Ok but cuts out and dies after about 10 seconds at full revs. A couple of times it seemed to race and the revs picked up just before it dies. There seems to be fuel on the inside of the air filter. Is this normal? Any ideas where I can investigate next? Cheers
  13. I run all my saws on Aspen and have had no problem so I am pretty sure this is not the issue. My first thought was a fuel starvation issue but I don't really have the technical know how to diagnose the problem. I will start by trying to get to the tank breather and see if it is blocked.
  14. http://www.barrettsmallengine.com/partslist/echocs270wes.pdf Page 6 part 31? Looks like it is behind the starter - I will remove the starter and see if I can see it.
  15. Yes it does have an H screw - but I am not so confident in adjusting it - I don't want to do any damage! The other clue is the primer bulb seem slow to pop out again. I have read this is a sign of blocked fuel vent. Just don't know where to find the thing!
  16. Hi Our three month old echo 280wes has started cutting out at full revs. It has be running fine up to now. We run it on Aspen and it has never had a problem. Then on Monday it just started dying. It starts and idles and revs fine but when you hold it on full revs for about 10 seconds it starts to bog and then cuts out completely. Seems to do it more when hot. I took it to the local dealer who swapped the Aspen for petrol and pronounced it fixed. It did seem to run Ok for a bit but then started cutting out again after I refilled with Aspen. So is it the Aspen or is it something else? I tweaked the L screw and it still cuts out at full revs so I am thinking blocked fuel vent? But not sure where it is located on the Echo, does anyone know where to find it?
  17. This is the tent I use for 'wild camping' Coleman - Cobra 2 Not bad for the price. Weighs about 2kg.
  18. A few ideas here: Home - TCF Engineering
  19. Is this considered a good idea then? I have read about it elsewhere but always wondered if it was safe?

  21. My little Echo 280 WES seems to be running a bit lean. I hesitates when you squeeze the throttle and seems to take a second to come up to speed. My guess is it needs a bit more on the L screw? Anyway the Echo seems to need a tool to adjust the L and H screws. Like a small round socket but with one flat edge. Any ideas where I can get one of these tools? Cheers
  22. I want to get a tach so I can start tuning up my saws. Anyone used one of these: Stihl,Husqvarna chainsaw digital tachometer/hour meter.Genuine Andy Tach tool!!! | eBay Or is there a better option?
  23. I get mine from here: Lycetts | Insurance | Request A Quote1 Covers coppice work and charcoal making, volunteers.... Where abouts are you based?
