  1. I have a T516 which has never let me down. It is rated 1600kg lift but can be doubled up with a snatch block. It is a bit overkill for assisted felling so I have an 800kg ACE Tirfor clone with a 30m rope for this. I cant imagine needing the 3200kg Tirfor unless I was trying to debog a tractor or something!
  2. How about this technique for dealing with windblow:
  3. I think Clark Forest can get them made to order: Forestry Equipment suppliers since 1924 | Clark Forest How strong is the winch? What size rope you going to put on?
  4. Cheers all. I hear what you are saying about limitations but currently have no lift capacity on my tractor. Also I think options for a loader on my alpine tractor will be pricey and not offer a very big lift? So for not much expense they look handy to me. Found as couple of clips with them in use: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBKhW1fPqXk]DELEKS HYDR. 5. 500kg lift - the arm is 220cm long and lifts to 240cm plus the tractor linkage lift.
  6. What do people think of these: More info here: EL-500 Gruetta Idraulica Been looking for something to help load trailer / move things around the yard. Anyone used one?
  7. See if you can find a first aid trainer who does the +F courses. These are aimed at forestry workers and cover stuff like bleeding and crush injuries in addition to the normal first aid at work basics. here is an example: Forestry :: FAW+F and EFAW+F - REAL First Aid
  8. Its sunny here - but its not going to last! BBC Weather - More disruptive weather
  9. I actually opened mine up the other day. I was sort of expecting the whole thing to fall to pieces but the inner workings are all interlinked so should stay in one piece. Now I would not like to build one from scratch but if you carefully undo the bolts on the case and take a look inside you might be be able to see the problem. Good luck!

  11. Has he replaced all the fire rope? Made a big difference on our stove.
  12. House just got hit by lightning! Power went off for a bit - but back on now - but our telephone is toast!
  13. LogJaw Uses & Demos - 'Cuz Logs Don't Come with Handles It always looks to me that you really need two people for them to work properly?
  14. We have one panel on our roof and on a sunny day it will heat our 200 litre tank to 55+ degrees . On a cloudy day it heats to 45+. In the winter it does not heat much but we have the stove on! You can get the kits from here and fit them yourself: high-spec solar kit - 1x20 tube 47mm panel
  15. Solar thermal panel connected to coil on cylinder - its a perfect combo with a boiler stove! Can be done for a pretty reasonable price too.
  16. Have you looked into the price of a new winch? Igland tend to be expensive but something like a Uniforest is much more reasonable – you might be surprised. The new ones have a few more safety feature as well!
  17. Cheap will be poor quality no matter where it is made. The quality of Chinese manufactured goods will continue to rise as multi-nationals invest in their manufacturing industry. What is a £500 Chinese chainsaw? It is called a Stihl or Husqvarna! 18. I am not wishing for the end of local dealers - I am just saying that the internet is changing the way things are done and some dealers are not going to be able to adapt. I like my local dealer and will buy for them if they can get close to the right price. I tend to get bigger items like chainsaws from them where I can as I trust them to fix any problems that come up under warranty. But I worry for them! They are deathly slow to get parts and they really struggle to get close to internet prices. Another example: I was recently looking for a drum mower for my tractor. I rang around the local agri-dealers and did a few quick searches on the Internet. I found a guy not far from me that had a good price which seemed to be about the same as everyone else in the UK. Then on a whim I searched on German ebay. I found the same make and model much cheaper - I mean 40% cheaper. I contacted the German company who turned out to be a proper bricks and mortar place - they reply in perfect English and arrange to have the mower shipped from Germany direct to me in under 72 hours. They undercut the local guy by £600 including the delivery and they give a 2 year warranty and full parts backup. So the question is how can the same item cost £600 less in Germany than it does in the UK? Are dealers costs really that much higher in the UK? If you look at prices in the USA they are about half what we pay in the UK so where are the additional costs coming from?
  19. If I was a small local dealer I would be worried. The internet has already changed the way customers shop but this is only the beginning. The idea that a distant internet retailer cannot provide good customer support is flawed. An example: I bought a £400 camera from Amazon 9 months ago. It recently developed a fault and I emailed Amazon to ask for it be repaired under the warranty. I was apprehensive as to what they would say and was not sure how they would fix it. 20 minutes after I sent the email I received a reply saying the camera would be replaced free of charge and the new camera had already been dispatched! The new camera arrived the next day. All I had to do with the old camera was put it in the box and drop it off at my local Texaco garage where it would be picked up and returned to Amazon. I know that Makita in the UK already have a central service centre. You can send them any Makita item under warranty and they will repair and return to you all free of charge. What happens if Stihl or Husqvarna go down a similar road? I can see a time when a chainsaw develops a fault, you get on your smart phone and book it in for a repair, you then drop it at a collection point on your way home. 48 hours later the fixed saw is returned and delivered to your door or to a collection point of your choice. How does the local dealer get a look in?
