  1. Any ideas on how long after coppicing or planting it would be wise to exclude grazing animals. Obviously a bit species dependant. We have coppiced a bit of Ash/Birch with some Oak that used to run with the adjoining field, and have fenced it off, just wondering how long it will take to get animal proof. It is really appreciated by the cattle in the summer as they can get in the shade away from the flies.
  2. Ive cut some off at ground level, but Im hoping it doesnt grow back because its toxic. (I am a little bitter and twisted on the subject) but I think it does coppice freely
  3. you know when the condition is serious, when the focal length is greater than the length of your arms:thumbup1:
  4. I think its called the stool, where the tree has been coppiced for generations. Ash seems to often be left higher than chestnut, I dont know the reason for this but it may make it less convenient for rabbits to chew the new shoots.
  5. Much as I like all the different theories, for my cattle stock net and two strands of barbed means that they will mostly be where I put them. We graze some ground where the deer are often caught up in the wire so I changed 50 m to one strand HT on top, result 4 hours new years eve x 3 people, 3 hours New Yrs day (+ hangovers) x 2 people and today just myself for an hour and a half chasing bullocks back into the field. They have loads of grass, but they will always test the boundary. Im a great fan of hedges but if you want to sleep ever, barbed as well.
  6. but..... a little bit of thinking may have the biggest "added value per tonne"
  7. There is a book called the Housebuilders Bible by Mark Brinkley which we bough whilst doing our barn conversion, Irritating but useful and probably a worthwhile investment
  8. Just to clarify If the tree is say at 45 deg and currently resting on the fence, would the owner be liable for any further damage caused by it?
  9. Its usually just a plastic pipe with brass olives, cut to length and install. Get the old one off for sizing because the metric and imperial can look close enough but arent when you try to screw it together
  10. Absolutely, Merry Christmas everyone
  11. Oddball, what a dude Im just drinking my wine an eatin my cheese
  12. Does your dog bite? (inevitable happens).... "Thats not my dog" Inspector Cluseau
  13. can we start an Arbtalk Cloud Finance deal, no completely mad, ....or is it:confused1:
  14. does that mean that if a tree falls on something, then the landowner is liable for the cost of putting it right?
  15. I applaud the "new generation" for taking a responsible attitude to safety, and I dont think its surprising that they see a chainsaw op without ppe as nearly naked (dreadful thought) I bought some chainsaw chaps on impulse, I was at the counter buying a chain and a bloke walked in (WALKED) for a replacement pair. That did it for me. After the 87 hurricane we would log/ring up everything and hope it wasnt there in the morning Just slightly different times, so different attitudes are cool, better someone who wants it has it, but I deplore nicking
  16. can you buy them as a separate item?
  17. I am not at all sure, but I though that Employers Liability was the only insurance required by law, (apart from road risks) Clarification anyone
  18. The length of this thread goes to show how emotive this subject is, plenty of advice available but no coherent answer as to what price, but luckily you didnt ask people for a price you asked them what you should consider. A builder in our village asked me why I hadnt invited him to quote for an extension on our house. I explained that I though he would be too expensive for us. His reply has been with me ever since when dealing with this sort of issue. "I dont mind if folks think Im expensive or cheap, I always quote a price for which I would be happy to do the job properly, I just ask that folks do me the decency of inviting me to quote"
  19. I had mine out for some partitions in the sheep shed, didnt like the old gas and frosty weather, so I found a new use for the lamb warming box. (as its usually my own grass, I dont get to sit down)
  20. And make sure youve allowed enough to get rid of arisings, or make sure the customer knows they are staying/burnt on site
  21. I lent my ally one to the kids and somehow there was a hole melted through the inside when I got it back, so had to loose it. I would go for the stainless next time, but it wont be as efficient I suspect.
  22. Ty Can you help us with Elagueuse Thermique? Thanks
  23. Most woods split easier when green, so anther reason to cut, split, stack
