Chris it was my tree that dropped a bough onto next door, and the footpath. My relief that it hadnt hit a fence (the usual port of call for everyone elses wood falling onto my side) was tinged with concern as to what would have happened of it had hit someone. The covering my backside issue is dealt with by the insurance man, he would probably use a different phraseology: if you know what I mean:blushing: I will go and look at the tree again tomorrow, but from where I stood this morning it looked like one of our better specimens If there is any chance its a liability, then its coming down and going on the pile for chipping. Curiously in the ELS/HLS (environmental) scheme that we are just about to enter, we are required to leave all standing and fallen deadwood where it is, which is great for woodpeckers but a worry for bullocks etc.

Thanks for your replies guys, I thought that the wood at the fracture looked fairly good (laymans term for not pappy or soft) I will go and have a better look at the tree to see if there are any other signs of trouble. Might nick my wood back! Thank goodness it didnt land on someone

Can anyone enlighten me about landowners liability for branches falling off trees. In particular I discovered today a branch from an oak on our side of the fence, has come down on the neighbours side, onto a public footpath. Also, there seems to be a lot of this sort of thing going on, any ideas as to why?

Can you post some pics of said beetle, my ash logs are full of those holes, so I have left them outside in favour of some cherry (once the fires lit it is less of a worry), but if your house is mostly wood perhaps too many un-invited guests ....

Obviously Dean should say he has got two cameras, but only get one, that way they will still be looking for the second one to knobble instead if nicking his gear. There is a good party game along these lines, you take a bloke out of the room and blindfold him. You take a girl and pin four safety pins about her person, you then wheel the bloke in and tell him he has to find the five safety pins. (For Dean of course the scheme would rely on them doing their reading first, so not sure:blushing:would it work)

there was a really good thread on here about this a while back, I couldnt find it but one of the contributors was really useful with the flow/torque/power side of things. One of the ideas with splitters is the dual pump, both bits of the pump contribute oil when speed is required, but when a gnarly log stops the ram only one section of the pump is in action which saves stalling the engine of whatever is driving it. What you need is someone who can explain these things:blushing:

sorry, never was any good at explaining myself:001_smile: Hydraulic PTO Gearbox with Group 3 Pump 83.75 l/min ZZ000486 Free UK&EU Delivery | eBay this sort of pump goes on the back of the tractor, saves messing about with shafts and bearings, this one may be a bit large, it depends on the size of your splitter how much flow you need.

You just need One tank Suction and Pressure Hose Relief Valve if there isnt one on your splitter One Pump, and if you go for the type that fits straight on the PTO shaft at the tractor, you dont need to complicate the thing with bearings. If you choose a big enough pump you will get plenty of output without needing the revs, which will save you gallons of fuel Im bound to have forgotten something, Couplings if you really do want to connect to tractor hydraulics again, but you may find one pump is easier to put connect than two pipes. OH yes, A filter (usually goes in the tank)

have you tried it? I was thinking the scottish tray drier type of thing or hot spot spears, but cant decide which would be best

Its an awesome sight seeing a couple of 10 inch green Norway Spruce poles flying through, but in reality theres a lot of water to get rid of. Sorting out chips is more of an issue than I thought it would be! Thanks for all your help

Skyhuck , thanks I am quietly c...pping myself . I have been keeping a close eye, and things are actually calming down now, but there was a few loads that we chipped from the brash pile that got quite warm after only one day. I dug a great hole out of the pile with the loader and it cooled off straight away. Fingers crossed its all behaving at the moment Rod
