  1. I dont get much recent info from googling croydon tree station, is it now called something else, (and sorry for the derail)
  2. you may find it is soaked in nasties from the railway and kicks up a bit when you light the fire. I used a top rail off an oak gate to make a hearth surround, when we put the planer on it it stank of creosote, even thou to look at it was just a beautiful oak colour.
  3. Nice installation, how many kw? And what is your plant room made of?
  4. Rich, it was a Heizohack crane fed that takes up to 400mm, about £700 per day. To be able to store chips you need to get them below 35% mc, they ought to be 30% when going into the boiler, less is better. The machine will chip anything but if you put arbwaste/lumpwood through it tends to have more shards as the log turns sideways going in, so long lengths are better. The shards can block the boiler feed mechanism. Im still learning a lot about all this, we only put the boiler in last summer, and Ive used up what I though was an enormous pile of wood that we had on the farm, so always looking for more, provided it doesn't cost too much!
  5. too far for me, but I collect/accept wood, stack it to season and have it chipped in the summer for my boiler. At the moment Im buying chip till I can get ahead with my woodpile
  6. best sell it for biomass chipping, where abouts are you?
  7. I would want to keep some weight transfer to the tractor for less drag and more traction.
  8. I have just clad a shed with some chestnut, no sign of movement (touch wood) and when it colours down a bit it will look lovely. (and obviously it needs tidying up inside)
  9. I have some coppice to finish cutting next week, should be about two days work, between Edenbridge and Lingfield . PM me your phone number if interested.
  10. any pictures of the winch, and what sort of capacity is it? thanks Rod
  11. Al I have to ask, is there a scientific reason for the beer cans, or is it just a useful place to put them?
  12. anyone think it was the three yr old throwing a tantrum cos his toy was bust?
  13. I have seen trees die from water from leaking water mains, maybe the chlorine, perhaps worth a thought
  14. 17 Bays of cleft chestnut 2 rail, 1 man 1 day in fairly rubbish ground, holes all hand dug. (I didnt do it myself, I reckon it would have taken me three days)
  15. The peat and smoke comes from the drying of the malted grains, so in the Highland and Islands a more peaty tradition, but anywhere wood grows a more woody smoke.
  16. You were safer with the taste and smell of wet Scotch Terrier, but now you have been hooked. If you can find a pub with a good selection of malts, you will have hours of endless entertainment deciding which is your favourite, from Laphroaig (nearly neat diesel but awesome) to Highland Park from Orkney there is one for every occasion.
  17. You might be able to apply for entitlements as a new entrant. Im so out of date now because I havent dealt with it for a while, but if you want a bit of light reading then get the guidance notes and spend a few evenings!
  18. Huck, the heat exchangers are are physically pretty small, but by the time you add the pipes, the take a bit of space. Sorry I dont know the make. The district heating pipe does have a loss, regularly quoted as 25 watts per metre, 60m therefore is 1.5 kW (24/7) is 36kWh per day, at 3 pence is nearly £400 just to run the pipe. ( but no sweat if the logs are cheap)
  19. its like deja vue all over again
  20. How dangerous is this yellow snow?
  21. I was standing behind a lady who asked for a Tesco Burger, the assistant said "Would you like anything on that" she replied "Yes, a fiver each way"
