  1. Alder seems thrive in wet places, Sweet Chestnut spits in fires, so is only for for stoves, but the chestnuts are fantastic and Ive been eating them most of the day. Iv just planted some hornbeam because the leaves are a fantastic colour (or will be in years to come)
  2. as ever, poking about for an easy way out! Lazyness is a sign of efficiency. Thanks for the pointer.
  3. how many miles from Didcot to Slough?? did you know there is a powerstation there that takes chip
  4. Anyone know where to source timber bunks, I am hoping to use a flatbed trailer for moving timber on the farm, either using weld on sockets if such a thing exists, or Ive seen loads of timber flying around on artic trailers which seem to have some sort of frame. Excuse my ignorance, I am more familiar with moving bales than wood, perhaps you can put me on the right track.
  5. Ben, I think you you should try to turn this round. Wood is not worth much without a customer and picking it up only pays back your pride. His pride as an "honest gent" is what you have to play with. If you call him, say that you are not going to cash his check untill he has burnt the logs, and if when he has felt the benefit of really great quality wood he still feels he hasnt had good value then you will return his cheque and he can send a donation to his favorite charity. A few words will probably win you a loyal customer, but just dont count on it workng every time!!!! Good luck
  6. dont believe it, youll fork out some hard earned, only to find its just as painful
  7. so did they come out?? or are you still drilling
  8. Perhaps we can have a challenge to see who can come up with a useful object that is retained comfortably in the slot
  9. Sounds like I got off lightly, my mate though 50:1 was 50/50, so he didnt really get past starting the thing. Cost me a new plug and yes probably lucky nothing worse happenend
  10. good point, you would want to see that hurtling towards you in your rearview mirror.
  11. Having been once to a 4x4 event, where they seem to get stuck on purpose, they all have approved tow ropes which stretch, but when they fail they do it gradually so there is no energy in the rope to injure people. The standard proceedure seems to be to have some slack in the rope, stuck vehicle spins its wheels then the towing vehicle sets off briskly.
  12. Which grant scheme did you apply to?
  13. You might consider the story of a fridge, left at the side of the road with a sign, Free Fridge, Perfect working order, that remained where it stood untill the sign was changed to Fridge, Perfect working order, £25. It was nicked that night.
  14. is poplar what they use for matches (before fag lighters took over)?
  15. the bacteria in a composting heap are very oxygen hungry and if washed out into a watercourse can starve the residents there of oxygen
  16. loading a truck would only take a hour, so on the face of it not much, but keeping the cost down depends on it being well organized.
  17. so the point is( well maybe), if it was dropped off at a yard with a loader, how much would it be worth?
  18. anyone in the Kent Surrey Sussex area have a problem with getting their woodchip mooved on? I have a loader and possibly a shed, as do many farmers, perhaps a little collaboration would help.
  19. Well done with getting the Jap going, just an aside about the pulley, it may be easier and cheaper to buy a trple pulley with 1" bore, that would probably be a standard item from BSL Brammer, though they dont seem to have an outlet on IOM Rod
  20. so which joker nailed their pie tin to the pole at the end of the street?
  21. In Sweden for example, nearly every farm has forestry as welll as ag. Probably because the ground is frozen for the whole winter. My farm is a bog so although I have timber, I just cant get there
  22. Either my lense is grubby or the stove needs cleaning
