  1. After a while you will find ways to do it easier, and it won't hurt. when I get under my truck to do stuff I find my neck and other muscles hurt 'cos I rarely use them. Ps enjoying the thread, I did a similar course nearly 20 years ago.
  2. Agreed, but I'm sure it happens.
  3. The guy may not have wanted to make anyone aware of the sale, ie his ex wife, taxman etc.
  4. Chippers have no legal requirement to be registered. So if one wanted to sell for cash, no questions asked, one could. Like a lawnmower or similar.
  5. He could have paid cash.
  6. Good points. They've been called the mortgage tree before:001_smile:
  7. Of course it's viable, many engines are attached to tractors, you can use the tractor to get the engine to the chipper. Hey presto!!..........roll eyes.
  8. As far as public liability is concerned, for a bit of weekend work, ask yourself "do I really need it?" What sort of work are you talking about? If push comes to shove you can get the client to claim off their house hold insurance. Not everyone will agree but until you really work on your tod maybe keep your powder dry.
  9. Very good, must have been enjoyable. Call me a old grump but I'd rather hear the saw and the thump of limbs than ANY music. Did you have any loaders or lifters on site for the cordwood?
  10. Why don't you just say how much?
  11. We can all go round in circles saying charge more or don't, I suspect the OP knows the options. Fact is he's going to have to figure this one out for himself. We have all been in similar situations and got out of it somehow. There's no magic answer. Running your own business, if it was easy everyone would do it.
  12. Can someone explain to me how a guide bar can be "Good" or "Better" than another. Surely if the chain runs round it's fit for purpose. On the very rare occasion one of my guide bars lets go I just go to the shop and get another, usually Oregon I think. What I'm asking is how does this improvement manifest itself? Not looking to argue (For a change!) Just curious.
  13. Nice collection, all yours?
  14. Oh well, lesson learnt I suppose, as for helping each other out....really? Of course many of us have occasional mutually beneficial relationships with other businesses but don't forget you were supposed to be getting a free load of sellable logs out of the the deal. It was a business transaction. (That went wrong!)
  15. I always find this faux horror at other people's work a bit of a yawn. There's one on here recently where someone posted some pics of a tree he quoted for and had been "butchered" by some awful Arb criminal The guy who did it came on and gave the valid reasons why he had done it (previous pollard points, client spec, location etc) Made the OP look a bit daft.
  16. Looks good, which is more than can be said for the Scottish weather!
  17. My old man had something similar, as I recall you had to pump the oil manually, honestly....by modern standards, it's rubbish.
  18. thanks for the info, interesting.
  19. So will the land just go to scrub? Or will they plant conifers?
  20. Love Border Collies, why won't there be anymore sheep there? (Just curious:001_smile:)
  21. I have a Kohler command on the grinder, lumpy but good, it's impossible to say really, your call, if you have the work I would upgrade the chipper to something like a TW, greenmech or Jensen 6 in with 30 plus hp. Yours was probably a good starter chipper ( like my 25hp arbor eater) but probably time to move on.
  22. What chipper? How many hours? HP of engine?
  23. What! Sounds a bit suss, what bearings? Is it burning oil?
