When he asked what's the best time to split the logs and then told you where the axe was then I reckon he had a glint in his eye - if you looked closely enough- He must have been joking and surprised at your reply. Probably now thinks you had included this in the price. Trouble is people earn say £10 per hour in their jobs and think if they've given you £150 for 4 hours work then you getting £40 per hour and must be rich. No matter how you explain they still see it as you getting £40 per hour- best not even try

This is a great thread specially for wanderlust types like me 480 euros is £412 for 2 blokes How does this really compare to UK taking into account your state deductions. I know it's only money but I'm interested to get a take on the 'French' way. It sounds like you lose a lot but is that really the case. I can't understand why the French can get away with H&S violations- surely with a no win solicitor staff injured at work would wipe the floor with this attitude as France must be governed by euro laws. Why doesn't this happen? Firms in UK follow H&S to the letter in most cases for this very reason. Also interested to hear how many of your private customers actually do the cash negotiation because of the system. Really wondering if it's going to be more prevalent here with VAT now at 20%. Sorry- too many questions

according to grand designs oak forms a crust which slows down fire and means it is ok to use in barn type houses- not sure whether this applies to turkey

This is the case but obviously anyone earning a second income will be keen to reduce their 'taxable' earnings- i.e sell logs for cash- this i suppose is only human nature I'd love to pay no tax- never happened though I know richer people than me who seem to -

Also if you have guys who spray amateur pesticides on a regular basis and then 10 years time develop some sort of skin allergy/whatever then they could conceivably sue you for compo. You would have to be able to prove they were adequately trained- Question is though would it be a defendable position to say' I told them to read the label and provided the appropriate PPE. This would not in my opinion be proof of competence or would it? I don't think the H&S executive website details this well

So what if you use an amateur approved pesticide (for in the home/garden) in a public place- It's not so clear I assume if you use say sbk (garden centre strength) in the home you can easily warn homeowner of the danger but in a commercial site this wouldn't be so easy. I hate H&S

My advice for what it's worth is buy the brand of saw that the nearest dealer sells then when you want chains/spares you don't have to go so far

This really gets me AAAAAARRRGGHHHH You do things by the book and what happens- they change the pages in the book- they even change the book By the way- you can store in an old fridge but the important thing is that it has a sump that can contain the volume of the chemicals should the containers all burst- Better to use an old chest freezer we were told Having done that I wouldn't recommend it as everytime you open the lid you get a faceful of fumes- not nice Rapid racking do a chemical cupboard which is ventilated and lockable for about £200- looks the business Maybe I need to go on the course again- we were told to sign off any areas where chemicals applied- now how often do you see this on your travels- even the council don't do it

I think it's the leaves on laurel that are the problem- anyone on here who has burned them on a bonfire will attest to the horrible smoke- They do have cyanide in them so advise composting Often made me think about when we chip them though- that wonderful smell of almonds- worried:lol:

Now that is interesting Not what we were told when I did my course. But As an employer does that mean I can ask un ticketed (un certified!) staff to carry out chemical application using amateur chemicals. How would I cover myself (duty of care and all that) This surely makes a mockery of the ticketing As a pro I am not allowed to use simazine(for example) Water supply pollution issues- but Pathclear contains simazine and is for amateur use- Whats going on??? What defines an amateur chemical- is it just one you can buy in a supermarket/garden centre or are there other stipulations Sorry- bleating on but this just goes against everything I previously thought and I'm trying to get my head round this
