  1. It's difficult- not helped by the recent unseasonal weather- imagine what the garden centres are experiencing The money comes in but goes out faster-an indication that you either have to get more efficient/work harder or put up prices. Hang in there- this can't go on forever. It was bound to happen(16 years without a recession) I think there will be an Olympic bounce.
  2. know the feeling We have over the past 2 weeks been getting contracts through for work for the year beginning september 2012 for us to sign(agree to). But they are all at last years prices. How much longer before something snaps. If inflation in our business (waste/fuel in particular) is running at I guess 4% how many years can you continue not increasing prices. Perhaps its not 4%- I'm just guessing.
  3. Agreed Whole bill including fine now paid I will phone next week and ask for the fine back. I agree- seems crazy to get in this position and I never have before but this year - well - just not organised I did think £500 was a bit much considering
  4. Finally paid my tax from jan 31st Got a £500 fine/interest on top. Now I've always paid up on time in the past but plain missed it this year-confused by my accountant. £500 for a one off mistake Does anyone on here know if this is standard practice and should I have argued a bit more to get the fine reduced. I know this is a bit like stable door/horse thinggy but at least I'll know next time
  5. They do look **** Take a pic in 5years time and republish this thread
  6. thats the thing I believe they use less water. When we were on holiday in corsica the villa owners had fixed the dishwasher so it only did eco washes because they get charged more for water in the summer. We found we had to put it on twice to get the stuff clean= defeated the purpose of eco button. Turned out their fix was to put a bit of insulating tape over a sensor so we removed it - naughty
  7. meeting up with google juice who are offering free 40 min chats about peoples websites. Hoping it's not just a way of getting me to sign up to something:thumbdown:
  8. If you gonna use as a wedge then would be best to not repair
  9. I've often thought this If they really are mates then they should be happy to help you and pay the going rate.
  10. I'm thinking Oleomac- Italian I seem to remember or maybe it was McCulloch Both were rubbish
  11. Registered on wednesday after two of us spending a good day sorting out all the relevant forms and uploading them. It's a bit of a headache TBH Time will tell- you get van stickers and buyers get your details so who knows. I would think it's more of a -you need to be registered to appear professional.= more expense I'll tell you in a couple of months.
  12. Bought an echo long reach hedgecutter that turns out to be rubbish compared to the stihls I had been complaining about- we're just gonna have to learn to live with stihls.
  13. Been in business 30 years Seem to have avoided 99% of all this corruption stuff. This has been a hard wired decision.
  14. This is a good answer Sometimes intuition and reading the site is more important than tables so long as you can show you have used your noddle:001_smile:
  15. Guess the american chippers don't have the safety bars like ours. I couldn't envisage a child getting past ours unless they were dropped from above. Maybe I'm not imaginative enough
  16. I'd be the first as a boss to want to be included in practical jokes (of the harmless variety). It's part of having broad shoulders. In truth I think it makes you feel as though you are part of the team. This action by your rogue subbie is spiteful and nasty. Not acceptable in anyones books. What though is he doing up at 3am on a regular basis. Word of warning- watch this guy, he may not be finished yet and when he can't make a payment on his tractor will want to blame someone. I'm sure you'll cope
  17. what did they expect No dimensions How on earth did they expect you to price:confused1: Oh it's not very big is not accurate enough. I've got a customer at the moment who keeps coming back to us but every job we do they are moaning about something- expecting something extra for free. Can't wait till this recession is history- unfortunately the attitudes it has created may be with us for some time.
  18. Thats the value of firewood at work. A local construction company estimator was telling me about a Railway bridge that they PAID £20K to get the job (remove) basically because of the value of the metal. Agreed it's not altogether the same thing but this is the environment we now work in. Having said that I have never paid a customer for the firewood- it feels like it should be a perk of the trade or it's a pain to get rid of and firewood is the cheapest way of getting rid of it. Only last week we totally screwed a 3ft chain as the tree was full of nails/screws(where the customer had put up birdboxes over the years) Thats about £50-60 chain cost for £80 worth of logs (but only once seasoned and logged). Just wasn't worth it.
  19. apple for me- the most 'arty'
  20. photos just like the seventies Is this the new tilt shift
  21. Thinking about all the arb jobs we do and I would say we could get by with a 7.5 tonner Yes it would cost more to run to jobs but we would only need one trip not two. Not sure where we would park it as parking is tight at our yard. Parking on site sometimes would mean more dragging. Possibly a trailer/navara combo with tracked chipper would be best solution all round legally. That combo new would cost say £45K But this would mean ALWAYS towing a trailer when doing gardening rounds to carry ride on mower. But- this would mean safer loading and not needing ramps. Is that the solution then? 4 W drive pickup with the security of a locked double cab/converted tool box Would have to be tipping trailer for chip/large kit. Or Just Keep Calm and carry on occasionally being overweight.
  22. you'll be hard pushed to find a farmer who will burn it now- the EA are putting a stop to that. How will a yard help- if you're not going to burn it because of the time it takes then you would be using the yard to store it/woodchip and then costs to get rid.
  23. Maybe harsh but perhaps customers need to be told the way it is Perhaps you should have just asked for a discount
  24. good tree for cs31 poor lad- at least he eventually realised what was happening
