  1. Today I received a load of stuff from KCC along with their business rate demand. KCC are helping fund an apprentice and it applies to tree work/ horticulture. Has anyone taken up a similar offer and how did you find it. I ask because in the past I have found these schemes more trouble than they are worth.
  2. balanced diet is best- now where have we heard this? applied to humans Farmers soon realised that the increasing returns from additional N applications suddenly dropped off. As you say, too much of a good thing.....
  3. David- what happens next time you do work on this tree- I mean it would appear that you don't want a large canopy to develop as the tree just couldn't hack it. So, at what point do you just repollard it and did you consider doing that anyway this time.
  4. Try putting it in one of those roasting bags.Would keep out the bad bacteria if there are any.
  5. some saying you don't even need tickets. In truth you don't need anything even PPE. Just a chainsaw. There you go, you're a tree surgeon. In reality there's more to it than that. If you want customers to believe you. If you want to think you can have an accident and not have to 'leg it'. If you want to have a serious discussion with a tree officer..... get some experience/ other qualifications.
  6. Out of interest, how many multi stemmed sycamores go on to live substantial lives??
  7. no one notices them if they take with confidence. Arb trucks with tool stores/crew cabs may be the way forward
  8. Do you know your fraxinus from your metacarpal without googling. If not you're going to have a hard time till you do as a self employed tree fella. As Rich said, spend some time getting climbing experience (climbing with the experienced) and this will pay dividends in the future.
  9. Chris- couldn't you have argued for some of them as personal use. Surely every man needs a chainsaw/strimmer/ hand tools/toolbox/ladders/ even climbing ropes etc. I'd go back to them and say your business developed from a hobby:001_smile: Probably partly true anyway
  10. Our cabstar was registered as a tipper and it still came up as VAN. they're crooks or they're stupid- you choose
  11. Targets? You could do anything so long as she doesn't come screaming if the union fails. To brace a sycamore that young would be mad IMO. Fell grind replant Pollarded would look awful. Reduction would be returning every 8 years. Give her those facts and see what she thinks. Or Walk away Just noticed thats what you originally suggested= spot on
  12. Just imagine a town with rainbow colours of smoke emitting from the chimneys. Thats an idea.
  13. Personally I thought brave and skill. Can't see why anyone is laughing. I've done this sort of thing and it's not for the faint hearted. I've seen blokes go white at the thought of getting a micro on the back of a truck. That was steeper.
  14. Thanks for this heads up- hope I never need it. Just reading about 112- it has been around years since the days of rotary dial phones. It meant a lock could be put on 3 and the emergency number could still be dialled. If I need it I'm dialling 999, 911, 112- the whole shabang
  15. Can he actually stipulate this or is it just a way of making his job easier. Plus as we all know, a lot of tree officers do private work(usually out of their area) and so this stimulates their economy. I recently paid £300 for a plan to build an extension. In truth I could have done it on a fag packet/ The structurals- that was different. In truth I'd be tempted to wing it and use the method statement posted earlier. But thats just me. You'd be surprised what you can do when you try. Perhaps it helps to have a qualification. Gives you confidence.
  16. Simple advice Tony Don't even consider load sharks- seriously Find another way. Can't you work a hard year and build up a bit of a money pile. Use that to kick start your business.
  17. As I believe. A lot of requirements on the surface appear daunting but it's just office speak. You need a practical head and then just write stuff down. If they don't agree, you'll just have to do it again. Padding quote is bang on:thumbup1:

    Topping

I expected a little self congratulatory whoop as the tops land. You can take a northerner to america but that don't make them a yank. Nice work- and accurate.
  19. Not true Really soo not true You could ruin your business by thinking this way You underestimate the intelligence of your customers.
  20. I will read the other 2 cases tomorrow Felix. I'm sure you know your stuff.
  21. please read up on roles v nathan- it's very relevant.
  22. OK - I've read this now The issue was with chimney sweeps who died as a result of CO poisoning. They were experts and should have known the dangers and damages were halved because of this. They were constantly warned about the dangers. So- the householder, in getting in unskilled workers- charging low prices- would not be able to use this argument in their defence. The judge held the sweeps partly responsible BECAUSE they were experts. It's a case that proves the homeowner should get in experts not cowboys and woe betold any who think they can save money by using unskilled tradesmen. Gentlemen, we have the law on our side and it would appear clients who try to save money by not using skilled tradesmen will be burying their heads in the sand.
  23. So this is the opposite of what others are saying. Which is it - client responsible or not. In building the main contractor is I believe responsible and thats why they check tickets/method statements etc. Does that mean client is a main contractor??
