  1. so next time you see a naked tree surgeon rubbing themselves up and down a birch tree- you'll know why:001_tt2:
  2. great photos I haven't had a good bonfire for quite some time but I remember how some on the firm just couldn't get the hang of starting a fire- i.e. loads of petrol etc but no common sense. I used to find a firelighter coupled with a kindling stack worker almost always
  3. very neat very smooth I love innovation in tree work
  4. if there were an industry body they could fund accurate scientific tests to get calories numbers for all wood at say 2 different moisture readings 20% and green. Would be a great source of knowledge. And Finally put to bed the firewood poem:biggrin:
  5. drop it on the shed get client to claim on his house insurance for new shed u put it up
  6. i thought of this but there's so many things you can't do on woodland including 'run a business' so i ruled it out- I'd love to hear from anyone who has managed to get round this one. Trouble with woodland is there's generally a neighbour or a footpath nearby that is used by walkers who would complain if you started messing things up which you would invariably do with a business( hardstanding/structures that are secure/ tracks in and out/ bonfires/ compost heaps/ woodchip heaps)- would be a great place to run a landscape orientated business though
  7. Brian spelt bryan
  8. can't sell by the ton/tonne as dryness is an issue can't sell by cu. m. as airspace is an issue. so sell by 'the load' - everyones happy
  9. proof of the pudding
  10. if you'd just chucked this on loose how far up your side panels would it fill?
  11. so you give 2 different prices wet and dry everytime i've been hesitant over wood because i think customers will not like it i've been unable to sell it now i just big it up- most customers are predudice
  12. loving it latin distinguishes us from the crap cockburianus is a classic who would consider doing this with this from abscind to zylem its all good thats a challenge anyone up for it?
  13. but when the work dries up will have 15 men to pay from what angle do you come from?
  14. too true
  15. by the ton? thats just an excuse to sell wet wood a load is a load and your customers will soon work this out
  16. i'm with you don't rent as landlords are just in it for their own gains you want to develop the land not their pockets
  17. Have a chat with others in your area see what happens with them If you find a boss who is working or paying when unable to then phone him up in the spring and see what he has to offer for next year. Above all, don't have a go at your boss- in my experience you get the boss you deserve. Just don't stick with him/her if you're not happy. If it's a new business then offer to do some phoning round cold for half pay- it's better to be constructive whatever happens. Or maybe offer to get work in for a cut of the profits. Do all this and you'll prove to yourself whether you will maybe make a boss one day.- just remember if you do- treat your staff right
  18. It is a reality but I have to admit I don't pay sick pay- that turned out to be taking the piss with phone calls explaining' up all night at both ends sort of excuses' The 10 days paid are not really paid for days off- they still have to come in- even if we just play games interspersed with a snow clearance call/ servicing/ reorganising/ just keeping the business up and running- yes - even those brick damaged chains get a file up.
  19. seems a fair price- don't lose anymore sleep over this Go for a drink and ask him if he would like to book another load The firewood market is so variable- every customer that has had wood delivered for some time will have had a great range of quality and volume delivered. If he bought from you- then what happened to the last person he bought off- It's likely being a pub that he buys off anyone who drinks there and says they have some logs
  20. how much did you charge for the cu m of logs- it may be important to this thread
  21. If a business with 5 employees can't make enough over the year to pay staff for bad weather- my calculations include 10 days off per year including when rain really stops play- then someones not doing the sums right or pricing right. More than 10 and it means the boss man is going to be pushing hard for a while to recoup those losses- depends how you see it. As an employee it's your job to bring in jobs early occasionally just as some jobs will run over- thats just the way it is. I just wish i could book training courses on a whim so that something constructive could still be done when bad weather strikes.
  22. ... best piece of advice i can give one man banders is don't be!! EMPLOY SOMEONE!! you then have to make things work, get out of bed, push the prices etc etc then you have someone to have a laugh with/ blame during the day....;-) alex ps lots of firms round here just doing lawn maintenance and new lawns??? Echo that employ someone who won't accept variable hours too much- will force you to ...get on with it
  23. Raynauds syndrome is a problem i have had for some years now It deteriorates- use heated gloves and socks by Blaze There are also drugs Nifedipine - not sure they work as i keep forgetting to take them. I like the sound of deep heat on the back of the hands- I will try that one Good luck
