  1. I pay staff even if it snows at basic rate and also when they work overtime in the summer at time and a half If staff don't make it in then they don't get paid obviously- if I can get in on time i expect them to- i.e if it's snowing when they go to bed then set the alarm earlier. There's always stuff to do getting things straight waiting for an emergency etc. reading health and safety stuff/ sharpening/ making sure spares are all there There's loads to do
  2. And thats exactly what we're doing and have been for 2 years now pays the piper calls the tune - dance baby
  3. quite right and if they are vat registered then they are using the request pointlessly
  4. thats the truth and what i was thinking you could use vat increase as your excuse to put up prices though you're not vat registered but the intelligent customer will see this flaw better to use increased insurance/waste/fuel/oh and i can remember stihl put up their prices by about 15% this year/servicing/additional paperwork due to government- theres loads of reasons in truth Increase your prices and risk losing a contract is the big question and that depends on your relationship with your customer/quality of the competition in the area etc. Don't risk that relationship by saying you have to increase prices by 2.5% due to VAT. You may end up looking like a con artist Thats all folks Aint business hard:001_tt2:
  5. mainly poplar and oak but tried those compressed softwood shavings round things last night it's not the same
  6. really sorry to hear this I know the feeling- be strong and determined to go forward
  7. Thats the point really You lost money going to the hire station/phoning around for the best price/cost of hire plus the aggro- you always lose money one way or another if stuff busts unless you can predict it and get it ordered in time and fit it before you go on site. Mind you even new stuff gives grief but not quite so often (usually) I'm convinced get good discounts+change tools regularly with receipt- then sell stuff that has paid for itself for cash- do the math- in business this is the way forward. Not only that but new gear is up to date with anti-vib/efficiency/image Look at the new stihl backpack blowers- a joy to use lecture over it's just the way i see it others will see it different depends where you want to be
  8. Gave about 10 pints when i was younger- enough for a refill if i ever need it
  9. Is it because you are surprised that it still runs good or is it that you are getting better at maintaining/sharpening it. Only way to know for sure would be to put it on a test bench
  10. Yes theres old gear that is well maintained- thats fine there's also new gear that is thrashed and not looked after. I'm not knocking old gear but I have worked with plenty of tree guys who come to site with problems with their tools and it wastes a lot of time for everyone- means we all work harder all day to catch up time lost. it's usually guys who are not charging enough to put aside time to do saw maintenance
  11. That must be it then it seems we are the only ones posting that problem I'll give them another try as i did think it was a good idea at the time. Seems as in everything there is a stihl/husky split though:laugh1:
  12. sorry mis read But don't you find that the fuel sprays out of the CHAINSAW:001_smile: fuel tank with the petrol quik fil caps- It was always happening with us- were we doing something wrong. I'm talking about the ones where u press them down into the tank and the fuel automatically jets out. Hope i haven't hijacked your thread but it's closely related.
  13. Thats so true It is greener and quicker Try telling that to the neighbours though and the cops who drop by with a lecture. Seems people would rather put up with a noisy chipper- I suppose it affects fewer people
  14. we used them previously thinking they saved time not taking off the cap but in practice found that as they were almost full the fuel sprayed out of the tank kind of defeating the object
  15. Thats cool Few and far between but I think thats great He must be a good friend
  16. It's not happened much on site but our store was broken in twice Gits used portable burning pack No padlock that I know of can resist that It was a real low for me as happened at the time I was just getting a decent bit of kit- no insurance either. You pick yourself up and go forward get insurance and wait till it happens again then its a killing on the claim:thumbup1:
  17. Been on my licence for 20 odd years By the time it happens i suspect the organs will be shot Never know though I may be lucky:001_smile:
  18. just don't share it it'll end in tears mark my words even if you are both straight about it- they'll be the day when you want it and he has used it the day before , finished late and left it needing attention- gonna cause friction. Or the day you want it and the weather closes in and means you go into another day- when he has it booked. You just not going to be the same friends as before- he's got the climbing skills and now a chipper so only you can lose. I know this sounds negative but............................... It's experience i suppose
  19. if your climber wants a half share of a chipper then it seems to me he wont be using you for some jobs-prob find someone cheaper. my advice is buy it outright yourself
  20. also can do your chips in it:001_smile:
  21. in my experience using shagged out gear increases your costs as time is wasted fixing
  22. what u going to do when u can climb no more i assume £250 is cash job u need in this business to charge at least £400 per day for 2 men inc. equipment rates can though get up to 600-700 depends on the speed u work. Obviously the odd 'lucky' big price usually when u didn't want the job I always price for the job but have a day rate in my head price also depends on how busy you are looking forward
  23. you're now doing the right things if you employ guys PAYE don't forget there are only 230 working days in a year so divide your annual expenses by 230 for costs per day
  24. we've used spry crisp and dry when being forgetful- don't notice any difference. i've heard some say used sump oil ok. personally i'd never consider dumping a gallon of oil in the woods
