  1. can't understand why a normal fell wasn't best suited No need for all the kit
  2. do the physio don't cheat yourself:sneaky2:
  3. what does this mean?
  4. If you've hit a rut then it's possible you need a rethink get your enthusiasm back put up your prices(cherry pick) use the free time generated to market yourself to a better paying customer even doing the same things- always better if you get more wongga:001_smile:
  5. my rate is £50 for ton and half ish (cash) maybe try for a bit more if you have had to take it back to your yard then reload it
  6. burning poplar 3 month seasoned splits fine it's light burns a treat on the log burner try everything/ listen to no one
  7. I too can cut down an ash and that evening log it and using kindling made from the logs get the fire going lovely- started the easy way with a fire lighter. Don't see what the problem is. Everything burns like a furnace really- when i open the door i am guarding myself from the heat. Last month I dropped some alder off to a customer- he thought it was oak No wonder people get ripped off. Only charged him diesel money as some of it was rotten
  8. ours finally gone 12" last week which is a lot for kent
  9. I hope this will develop some discussion on a topic that is close to all our hearts Recently I set about getting an environmental statement set up and during this process have been sent this e mail by the NatWest mentor assigned to the case. Please pick over the meaning Further to our conversation on Friday please find attached the Environmental Policy Statement. With regards to your question on waste, chip, shred, cut or pulverise plant matter is considered as waste however you may find the following information of use; If you transport waste produced by your own business you don’t usually need to register as a waste carrier, unless you produce construction or demolition waste. If you keep, treat or dispose of waste you must have an environmental permit from the Environment Agency although you may be able to register for an exemption. Exemptions relevant to landscaping You may be able to chip, shred, cut or pulverise waste plant matter for recovery or reuse but the quantity of waste that is dealt with in any seven-day period or quantity stored at any one time must not exceed: 500 tonnes in England and Wales You may be able to burn wood, bark or other plant matter on the site where the waste was produced if you burn less than 10 tonnes in 24 hours. You must not produce dark smoke. You may be able to spread biodegradable wastes and soil from gardens and parks to agricultural land as long as it provides agricultural or ecological improvement to the land. You may also be able to spread these wastes on certain non-agricultural land, such as woodland, parks, gardens, verges, landscaped areas, sports or recreation grounds, as long as it provides ecological improvement. If you have an exemption, you must comply with the exemption conditions. If you would like some additional information on the Environmental Service provided by Mentor then please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards What does it mean?
  10. here we go they're not even teaching the same techniques. I give up:confused1:
  11. from the point of burning there should be another classification Not- hardwood or softwood but Good or bad? IMHO there are no bad burning woods it's a matter of managing what you have Burning birch to start a fire then putting on oak maybe adding some green if supplies of seasoned are low We all have our techniques and it's pure snobbery to want say all ash or all hornbeam- Customers should just learn to use what wood is available seems like that firewood rhyme should be the first thing on the fire
  12. Is that true Have to say i think wearing gloves to sharpen was a good idea
  13. not only pointless but expensive too anything else pointless?
  14. talking to one of my guys who recently did his cs31/32 you don't have to wear chainsaw gloves to pass the test anymore But you must wear gloves when sharpening the chain everything changes:001_tt2:
  15. sounds like something i would be interested in
  16. it's a luxury to get frustrated I've done some terrible cuts both before and after my original cs tests sometimes the saw/chain sometimes bad technique Teach him properly and not too downputting and it will repay you in time Lets face it- groundies work hard and sometimes for little reward.
  17. and work for £250 per day:001_huh:
  18. surely you're insured if you have paid for insurance cover period
  19. I pay staff even if it snows at basic rate and also when they work overtime in the summer at time and a half If staff don't make it in then they don't get paid obviously- if I can get in on time i expect them to- i.e if it's snowing when they go to bed then set the alarm earlier. There's always stuff to do getting things straight waiting for an emergency etc. reading health and safety stuff/ sharpening/ making sure spares are all there There's loads to do
  20. And thats exactly what we're doing and have been for 2 years now pays the piper calls the tune - dance baby
  21. quite right and if they are vat registered then they are using the request pointlessly
  22. thats the truth and what i was thinking you could use vat increase as your excuse to put up prices though you're not vat registered but the intelligent customer will see this flaw better to use increased insurance/waste/fuel/oh and i can remember stihl put up their prices by about 15% this year/servicing/additional paperwork due to government- theres loads of reasons in truth Increase your prices and risk losing a contract is the big question and that depends on your relationship with your customer/quality of the competition in the area etc. Don't risk that relationship by saying you have to increase prices by 2.5% due to VAT. You may end up looking like a con artist Thats all folks Aint business hard:001_tt2:
  23. mainly poplar and oak but tried those compressed softwood shavings round things last night it's not the same
  24. really sorry to hear this I know the feeling- be strong and determined to go forward
