  1. I wouldn't be happy with only 2 years from a new topper. I'm still regularly using a 200T that I bought in 2004.
  2. Normally i never haggle but went to buy a s/h chipper this weekend so i watched a few episodes of wheeler dealers to get me in the mood . The chipper was advertised for a reasonable price so I didn't try for a stupid amount. Got £150 of the chipper, a new blades/bolts set and over 50% off a nearly new Echo hedgecutter. Very happy with that. Problem is the dealer knew that i'd travelled 200 miles to see the chipper so they knew that I would almost certainly buy it.
  3. I recently bought the arborist model. As virtually all of it's use will be with a standard longarm set up, i was going to remove the outer ram but first tried it with both on and it balances fine. I did try climbing steps with it but very quickly took it off. I recently helped on a large pleached Lime hedge using it with an extended multi-tool long-arm, I recon it saved an hour or two on the job. One thing that you can't do is walk under trees with it on.
  4. My holiday this year was in Greece. Beautiful country but it was shocking how absolutely everything had to be paid for with cash - couldn't even pay at a petrol station with a card. No wonder their government is penny-less.
  5. I was sacked by my old employer for doing my own weekend work and having a free one line advert in YP (i'm sure that it wasn't noted as a sackable offence in my contract but i think that he was running low on work). I was lucky as my dad had been a s/e tree surgeon for about 40 years so he passed on some smaller jobs to keep me ticking over. Within 3 months i'd built up full weeks of work of my own. Within a year i took on my first employee. Built up tools over two years (including a chipper). Went VAT registered after about 2,1/2 years. Spent 10 years upping my day rate to a reasonable level from the stupid amount that I initially started at.
  6. Old arcade = Double Dragon (rear elbow never fails). Modern-ish = Worms
  7. Sounds good, only need another 1740. Come on people, we could built some Arbtalk timeshare lodges
  8. My wife and I go to Holt two or three times in a year, lovely place. I'm sure that i've been to Harratios too.
  9. Is this G.australe? What's the affect on Plane? Thanks, Ed
  10. Never seen this one on a Prunus nigra before.

Guys in tight tops and short shorts might attract a different sort of members to Arbtalk. Drugs would have been very handy - my hip was killing me after walking up that hill half way round that circuit. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  12. Sssshhh! If HSE see the story and this post we may all have to be wearing that in the future. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  13. Only picture I took yesterday - sorry. Some amazingly accurate/realistic carvings.
  14. Already circulated it to a lot of the local firms. Many of the college gardens departments and golf courses have also been regularly targeted so may also circulate it to them. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk

  17. I realise this, but as it says in the article, it takes time practicing the technique to get up to speed performing it. If it's tip died-back throughout the crown the client is almost certainly not going to pay for this on every branch, so i'm just thinking in that scenario you could offer that as an option to the client. I'm not a fan of pollards but if it's save part of the tree or wait till dead and remove, i'd be willing to try the former. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  18. Not sure but i think the big one at CorpusC was treated. The dead ones are not suckers, they are a group of Elms 100yards or more away - one was a half decent size, the rest was your usual 25ft semi-mature victims. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk

    Tiny 4x4, or ?

Holidaying in Greece, every other car is a Jimny. Saw one of these today. Never seen one before. Probably a lot better than the L200 I had - couldn't be any worse! Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  20. Also very interesting. So with multiple infection sites you could save the main tree, if caught early enough, by topping/pollarding the tree as long as the cuts are 10ft below the last stained wood. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  21. Very interesting Alec, There's a couple of big ones left in the Cambridge Colleges, Girton College still has one or two biggies, Corpus Christi has a very large one (guess 80ft-ish) and DED is rife there - all of their smaller Elms have died off. Been meaning to take some cuttings. Ed Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk

  24. Hi Arif, There was a SawFest organised a few years back where a few of us got together to compare saw performance. Another one might get organised if Spud can conjure up some more demon saws. You'd be more than welcome to come along. Ed Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  25. Bet you wished you never asked now :lol GlobalNewark is right, if the machine is going to be over 750kg, it has to be 7"+, if it's a 6" then sub 750kg (providing laws don't change, as stated earlier). Regarding the comment about just £500 for a trailer licence - it costs a lot more than that to the employer. I recently put my two guys in for the +E, £1000+ for the trailer/test (for the 2), £400 in wage costs plus the lost income for the two days and then only one passed! - cost me a lot more than £500.
