  1. I never met a farmer yet who even wares the very basic protection, how they last so long is a mystery but growing up with and respecting deadly tools probably has more impact than all the H&S crap put together. It can be a little over the top and is getting worse, sure its there just to create office jobs ?
  2. So much depends on local circumstances, are there Rooks, Crows, Magpies around? if so they are building right now, could even have early Blackbirds in bushes below and it is illegal to disturb any nest in use or nesting birds. It's all very well for someone else to tell you go ahead and cut, they are irresponsible and will not help you out with your heavy fine. And if at any time in the future you may have to fill in forms that has a question "have you been convicted of a wildlife crime" your stuffed. Get in touch with the powers that be, you can always check with the BTO or RSPB Even the forestry commission should be able to advise if only in a limited way like point you in the right direction. Check and make sure before you start a saw, you will surely be watched by someone and its not worth the risk. Wildlife are getting getting hit hard by development, pesticides & humans with no thought of tomorrow. Just look at the facts; house sparrows & starlings once so very common but are both on the red list!!
  3. Our friends in the US are a bit like us, they are paying for petrol and having cheaper stuff thrown in, a bit like us and beef burgers Are they sneaking ethanol into our fuel & we dont know it, causing the problems some-not all get with rubbers and stale fuel:confused1: Make you wonder:sneaky2:
  4. Spud, how do you tune the carb on an electric saw:lol: I was given an electric Makita that wouldnt cut, well they dont go through nails as easy as wood do they:sneaky2: I could tell my mate his chain was nice and sharp but the carb was set wrong,
  5. my mate got a new Makita electric saw, what a beast:blushing: and not what I expected it to be. I had it to sharpen after he lent it and came back not cutting they said:sneaky2: obviously they didnt see the nail in the wood:lol: Anyway, all cleaned & sharpened so had a play with it, felt all very alien to me but very powerful. Ideal for cutting wood on a sunday morning sort of thing like spud mentioned but I feel much safer with a piston going up & down May have something to do with the colour:lol:
  6. I found a tread here Stihl Motomix vs Trufuel 50:1 - Bob Is The Oil Guy while looking for something else, I cant see how big the can is but could be a pint being in the states? or maybe a litre. But if you look down the thread they seem to sell it in Walmart for $3.95 converted today makes it £2.60 very roughly around £20 a gallon ish. it seems a good site to browse around but havent looked yet, waiting for a rainy day sort of thing. But for the unconverted, please take into account the other small things that you dont think of when your looking at the price. Fact 1.You dont get water of dirty fuel Fact 2, you dont get rubbers splitting/desolving & distorting out of shape causing major probs. Fact 3, it burns so clean you will probably never have to decoke, took a cylinder os a saw running on it and clean as a whistle. Fact 4, fumes dont cause the same problems petrol does "head aches burning nose etc" Could go on but no point, your either going to use it thinking its good stuff or carry on with petrol thinking its good stuff and your saving because its cheaper than the other, until you get a problem caused by bad or dirty fuel, but hey..... your saving money right:sneaky2:
  7. lol @ Monikieman no never great folk Just found this on youtube in case anyone wants a look
  8. Interesting Holtec mobile slasher/chainsaw 2011 | eBay I wonder what project the seller had lined up for this:confused1: the description sounds a bit european to me, not celtic
  9. I got the first two series pretty good, helli loggers was good too. I liked Dustin and his old man, the old man probably forgot more than many of us learn just a shame he had drink problems, must have been a reason there always is. Jimmy smith, what can you say? would any of you have worked with him? He and his son was in need of some serious therapy, may have been good for the camera but if he worked with some of the guys I have worked with he would have been dead long ago
  10. probably the same people or relatives of the ones that paid a visit to an old guy living by me who had a knock on the door "we are tarmacing in the area and have a lorry load left over, your path looks dangerous and you dont want to fall. We could do it for you for £800. treat the weeds and lay it all propper... take us a day" so he got coaxed (more like bullied) into saying yes and they did it all in an hour, they said it would be laid the regulation 2" thick? in truth it is more like 1/4" to 1/2" but it looked nice when they finished and he paid up never to see them again. Despite the promise of a check a month later when it all settled. No I know it's easy to say no and send them on their way but to a frail 90 year old who worries about falling it probably seemed like the sensible thing to do at the time. They know there is one born every minute and if they knock 100 doors they will get a takers and its good money for the work done which isnt much. Do they sleep at night:confused1: well we wouldnt:mad1: A few weeks later we found out police were looking into a series of complaints of poor workmanship, unfinished jobs and things going missing from gardens. Years later we still never heard of an outcome but they havent been back, just moved around the country I expect
  11. Nice pics Spud:thumbup:
  12. must have been a one off, or maybe he was in the chipper I had a boat thieved down the coast a bit & wouldnt leave an empty sack on the side of the road ANYWHERE these days
  13. I got a Safety-Clean, Solvent Parts Washing, Parts Washers, Parts Washing Services | Safetykleen UK had it 15+ years and still got the same fluid in it! ok it hasnt been used for the last 8 years it was in the corner having a rest:biggrin: So I decided to get at it and use it again, expecting the fluid to be long gone with just sludge in the bottom of the drum, I was amazed to seen a few gallons still in the drum. Then thought if I switch it on maybe the pump will get knackered before I can turn it off. So took the pump out to make sure it was clean first, even the fluid was clean so put it back together and switched on, bingo. Working as good as the last day it was used years ago, I put this down to making sure I changed the filter when it needed it and that paid off. Its a great machine with a built in light on a flexible arm, I could get the fluid changed years ago I had a mate in a garage who used them but now I think I will be using white spirits when it needs topping up:sneaky2: I seen one on ebay a few months back but cant remember what it went for, they are much better made than the DIY machines but were never made for the DIY market, they were on lease as far as I know.
  14. be very careful if you clean jewellery, if there are any gems/stones/diamond set in rings etc it will dislodge them & you will find them in the bottom of your cleaner...... I found out the hard way
  15. Good saws, I will never sell mine it has paid for itself over & over must be one of the best ever made (but I am a husky fan I suppose)
  16. if in doubt, whip it out:thumbup1:
  17. lets hope they get through friday with limbs still attached, one simple lack in concentration and bang
  18. Whats the bet they will try to sell you another saw!!
  19. I would like to say shop local but youll have to go a long way to beat FR Jones for service, always pleasant to deal with. Local guy shot himself in the foot years ago, once bitten twice shy:sneaky2:
  20. I am very pleased with Aspen fuel, I just wish it was widely available like petrol is, I dont mean from a pump but at least on forecourts. Makes me wonder why they target market "pro users" and are happy not pushing the product, TBH some things that sell in big stores are so much over priced and people buy it like chain oil £12 a 1L bottle, £18 for a gallon of Aspen would sell so why isnt it available? The product is good, all machines will run on it and should save on servicing (like carb cleaning and carbon buildup) I am a very satisfied user and will continue with it, the goverment should subsidise it as its cleaner & greener but the robbing b...... just dont care, grab grab grab but thats another story:sneaky2:
  21. I havent looked at the link yet but can tell you some facts. Our local river used to be black with coal dust, the banks were black dust from 100 years of washing coal. we used to catch eels but not much else. These days the water is clean, there are fish also kingfishers breeding plus Dippers too. A study has been ongoing in south wales monitoring water quality and finding out dippers are becoming infertile due to oestrogen in the water! There are now sewage overflows which only open during a flood (but seep all year) but its all ok..... they do tests regular!! In summer when water levels are lower the river stinks, all very worrying when you think how much this is effecting wildlife. For the last ten years salmon have been introduced in the hope they return and breed, I have seen big salmon coming upstream and hope they managed to spawn but everything is stacked against nature and we are to blame. So next time your doing the washing or tipping anything down the drain try to think of nature and how we are treating mother earth, we are more fragile than we think.
  22. Only once did I take a chain to local dealer, he burnt every cutter and ruined the chain so never again. Obviously there are good and bad dealers and all down to how much they know (or how greedy they are and want to keep selling you new chains)
  23. Try Husqvarna, they always have plenty of leg room and waist size I always find preety spot on, try a pair on if you can, then maybe you could try bib & brace same time? They will last you years so get it right first time and always wear them (not with trainers!!)
  24. Before you look at this, pour yourself a drink rough as a badgers ball bag
  25. Husqvarna orange:lol: sorry just couldnt resist original pain looks like enamel or baked, probably get Stihl white in a spray, just make sure the surface being sprayed is ultra smooth & ultra clean, use thinners or tack rag. Preparation is the key to a good finish. take your time, do a good job and post a picture here
