  1. I remember talking to a FC forester a day or 2 after the storm,he was in charge of a fairly big area at that time. We were talking in some forestry areas where, without the benefits of beech shelter belts, whole sides of compartments were blown in with all the devastation with which we are now familiar . He was absolutely dumbfounded and kept saying 'we wont be able to clear this up in my lifetime' He was what i suppose we would nowadays describe as being stressed out. Occasionally, i pass through those stands and i remember him clearly, the way he walked up the rides,as if in a trance, and sitting in his motor, not quite believing what he saw, but his words did come true as he died shortly after his retirement, and the signs of that storm are still there for those whose eyes can see it.
  2. You're right , friend of mine got one during a big shop, took it in to the manager and told him to stick it up his jumper and walked out. He didnt hear any more about it.
  3. Yep, just taking out logs when anyone phones up for a load, thats all until new year. You know I run 3 bars on my 660, 25" , 30" , and 36", if you need it afore you buy a new one. Thought i saw you at Beeston this morning.
  4. You can borrow my 660 if you're stuck and need it to do a job you've priced Dom.
  5. If you're caught taking 'free' firewood thats been left on the ground on forestry commission sites, they will be down on you like a ton of wet concrete my friend.
  6. Like others have said, having a bit of a blinking rest, and recharge my batteries. Just take a few logs out when anybody phones for a load.
  7. Well,as the man with new orthopedic shoes said - 'I stand corrected'.
  8. Yes, the front left hand tyre ,while sitting on the seat, is on backwards.
  9. You're right there Felix, i dont want to turn my toes up just yet.
  10. Ive been coughing all kinds of gunk up for months, but now since running all my stuff on Aspen for this past 2 or 3 weeks, my cough has gone. I dont know if its down to Aspen, but if it is, i'd like to say thanks to you Eddie. - Tim.
  11. Yes, i saw some primroses out last week.
  12. The hand cutters that i know would rather do anything than handcut full time. Arthritic and rheumatic from working for years in the pouring rain, or boiling up in summer in full safety kit, mosquitos biting your nuts off, with backs so bad they'd have trouble lifting a kitten up off the carpet, no, hand cut it yourself or get a harvester in.
  13. If its any consolation Jon, i took mrs up to hospital in the middle of the night few weeks ago. I put a 3 hour ticket on but didnt remember the time. When i came outside to buy another ticket they had put a sticky fine on my screen as i had gone over by 15 minutes or so. It was £50 reduced to £25 if paid within so many days. So i paid up.
  14. Yes thats right Mike,I have it in the back of my mind that the FC also rolled an enormous amount of the '87 timber into a lake or reservoir and kept it in there for quite a spell to keep it fresh, that was over Brandon way too, cant exactly remember where though.
  15. Tarmac laid
  16. Yes i saw that, i said to mrs oldwoodcutter "oh look at that silly fellow" or words to that effect. She continued knitting a babys cardigan, completely disinterested.
  17. Wonder if they suffer from the timber fairies helping themselves of a sunday morning.
  18. My trucks are not sign written, and never will be.
  19. Whats not so funny is what has happened to a couple of log sellers that talk to me, one tipped up beside a newish bmw and a log bounced out and creased his customers rear passenger door, for which the bill came to something like £3K , and the other tipped up as usual and ripped out a 1000 volt abc that ran over his customers yard , he told me that uk power networks sent him an invoice for £4k, for about 4 men and 2 cherry pickers to re-install.
  20. Sorry to hear that Garth.
  21. This is my thinking too, as well as my cards and trucks being free of invitations to take my stuff, i also pay to advertise here there and everywhere, but you wont see my address on any of those adverts.
  22. Dont know whether ive mentioned this before,on a hot day we'd done 3 different jobs round and about and none of those customers had offered any refreshment,on the fourth job things looked as bad with a miserable old biddy in a rubbish choked garden. Just afore we finished she surprisingly asked us if we'd like a coke, i think i had 3 youngsters with me and they said yes. Out she comes with 4 mugs and 1 can of coke and equally pours the contents of the can between the 4 mugs. For once they were speechless for a few moments.
  23. For me its not the time thats the issue, its having got down there to tie them, its the getting back up again thats the problem.
  24. Another day at the office, eh Marcus
  25. Will we still be able to shoot wolves with lead , or will they come under steel legislation?
