  1. I don't employ anyone any more but it would be hypocritical of me to say anything
  2. Good pair of eyes on the ground helps a lot you can't always see from inside, there's 4 trees in the garden opposite my house which show just what happens when nobody's eyeing you in.
  3. Yep, spotted earlier another local dealer has got 3 secondhand takeuchis in, need to sell tractor first before I can go shopping.
  4. Only one I've owned previously was a jcb 3c which was 5 years older than me and due to the amount of play in the king post you had to be a good driver 😉
  5. Any strong thoughts on cats ? Seen a few secondhand for not bad money and found out last night is a dealer local to me 1.5 tonners cabbed with expandable tracks etc brand new £17400 plus vat with 2 year warranty, be out of my budget but seems a good deal.
  6. Yes have heard good things on the Takeuchi, friend of mine was hiring them regularly through hire base after he sold his 3 tonne, he's now bought a 1.5 ton bobcat, nice machine but he didn't realise when he bought it that it was the base model and has a very short boom and no fast tracking, agree on 2.5/3 tonners being far better, I'm just weighing up which there would be more work for have driven larger kubotas 5 and 8 tonners they are nice machine, only driven one Volvo and really didn't get on with it, budget will depend what I get out of the tractor, other thought with going for 1.5 tonners is my folks are retiring and selling the farm so I'm potentially losing my yard so worst case scenario I could get a 1.5 tonners and trailer on the drive at home, thanks for the advice folks.
  7. Evening all, I'm considering packing up my agricultural work as there's a lot more coming in on the landscaping/gardening side again now, so thinking about selling the tractor and using some of the money to buy a 1.5 ton mini digger as have fair bit of work to do for myself to at the farm, have driven plenty over the years mostly bobcat and jcb, just wondered what other people's thoughts are on best makes and models, thanks Ed
  8. Used to do the whole job by hand when I started and could do a 100m run by myself nice and steady in a day, hand knocking is a lot quicker on soft ground and on firmer ground you can always get two people on the thumper and still fly them in once you get your rythm.
  9. Usually use Stihl or makita one shots as don't use loads of fuel so only mix 5 litre at a time only time I had trouble was when they didn't have any in so bought 5 litre of pennine universal two stroke oil, didn't bother the huskies but used to kill the spark plug in my old Stihl 028 about every 3 weeks
  10. Price it high enough for extra men, 3 men dragging on a long drag can still supply brash faster than the man on the chipper can chip it.
  11. I still put two posts in at gateways but have also recently started using metal gate posts to save the trouble of having to replace them again any time soon.
  12. Borrowed my dads 04 one for best part of a year when I was between land rovers did the job but load space on the double cab isn't big enough to get much in and fuel consumption was around 25mpg if you lucky on normal use and when towing it was getting close to being gallons to the mile, too light on the back end too wouldn't put traction down if had a well loaded trailer on and would have to put it in 4wd to set off on any sort of slight slope on Tarmac.
  13. They did a load of vans round here including my brothers just before Christmas ford master keys are about £25 on eBay and unlock any ford can, they reckon that's what had happened as none of them had been damaged just unloved and stuff nicked.

Beat me to it silky, that's my take on football too 👍
  16. Not tree work but put a price in for 41/2 fence panels tonight at £450 as digging in alongside a stone wall so allowed bit higher in case of hitting footings, got message back saying other guy quoted £500 to do the full run of 8 which would require breaking through a concrete yard to get posts in, 500 ain't much more than the materials never mind any labour on it, I give up!
  17. I was told many years ago by an estate woodsman it's a damn hard way to make a living, he wasn't wrong, I'd have to second the simple approach if you haven't got loads of money tied up in machinery then your not going to be slogging yourself to pay for it 👍
  18. Don't give her ideas eggs, I've got a bbq to build yet 😄
  19. Yep loads of flat sandstone already in the garden, so nice and handy for building with 👍
  20. Not tree related but finally got time and money together at the same time to finish my patio at home before Mrs csservices divorces me 😄
  21. Depends on the size of your business, as a one man band nowadays, having a good accountant is worth its weight in gold, my old accountants screwed me royally and we're well paid for it, only found out when I changed accountants, new man is a lot more on the ball.
  22. Well went to a short days grounding for a lad I help out, reducing and siding an overgrown lleylandii hedge, plan was do that and finish day out at his yard cutting logs, ended up with the neighbour to the job asking us to reduce a large elder in the corner of his garden, followed by another guy 3 doors down asking if we could take out a small hedge couple of self sets and an apple tree, just finishing that and another neighbour came and asked if we could remove 2 small trees, booked that for another day as was already gone 5 and he had some other pricing to do, also got another job to do for the first neighbour from this morning! Wish I got days like this on my own jobs 😁
  23. Trust me I speak from experience, had couple of bad years and was claiming it, as soon as income went over 7.5 no more working tax credit and have to pay it back.
  24. You lose them if you earn over 7.5k and have to pay them back even if only slightly over.
  25. Ha know that feeling, don't think my turnover was as high as 38k last year.
