  1. This is my other bugbear, I dont claim subsidies, never have and dont agree with them. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  2. Yes it is, hence why I get a little irate when people start preaching about what farmers do, based on what they have seen or read of a minority. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  3. The other old favourite is "so and so will do it for x price, but we would prefer you to do it if you can match it" stock response is if so and so thinks they can do it for x price, good luck to them 😁 Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  4. When you've all quite finished tarring farmers with the same brush, please come and explain to me why when I'm rolling in all this money, why I have to work elsewhere 7 days a week to make ends meet and why I have to make a 20 mile round trip everyday to where my animals are because land rents etc have been forced up by land being bought up by townies with money and bigger farmers who are playing the subsidy game. Theres two sides to every story, same as not all tree surgeons are riding about in new trucks with new chippers, you cant judge everybody by what you see of the few. 5. Split it while its green and burn it when its seasoned if you let it dry before splitting it will be a cow. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  6. They will make you feel better while wearing it but long term your keepin the weakness that there from strengthening, bit of gentle weight lifting or stretching excercises will help far more 👍 Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  7. I was suspecting that was the way to go, just wanted to check 👍 Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  8. Funnily enough when I was a kid, the local tip comprised of a yard with 6 or 8, 8 cubic yard skips on it, no staff, no sorting, and there were always as many people there picking stuff out again to reuse as there were dropping off. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  9. Ok not a saw but a strimmer, picked up a stihl fs108 earlier today, tidy used condition, was smoking a little bit and the old boy said he hadnt used it for a year, so I suspected old fuel, bought it back emtied tank and refilled with fresh started ran fine, tried to adjust carb to stop smoke and ended up worse now will fire once then flood, have reset carb screws and no joy, just keeps flooding? 12. As above, dont get loads of enquiries but had some decent jobs through it and doesnt cost owt, more enquiries than paying for an advert in local paper thats for sure. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app

  14. When I first started I worked an hourly rate, but for last 15 years or so have been on day rate, less than 4 hours is a half day, upto 6 is a short day and 8 being a full day, no deduction for breaks, if it needs an extra hour hour to finish fair enough it stays at same price, like Matthew says when out with the digger, the client doesnt see the loading, transport and unloading, washing, greasing and feeling up part of the day, never been queried on breaks, usually more moans when hedgelaying or fencing when your on metreage rates when they see you crack out a load in one day on a good rate, again they dont consider that the next day you might not get enough done to make a wage so that over the job it evens out. 15. Back before landowners decided firewood had a value I used to get any timber that came out of hedge laying jobs and any wind blown off feeding jobs and ended up with a huge stack on the yard, more than we would ever burn ourselves so put an ad in the local paper, pretty much killed myself the first month selling 5-6 loads a week while hedge laying everyday and cutting logs evening and weekend, eventually dropped on an old mconnell saw bench, for 80 quid and a mate of mine bought a browns log splitter and came in with me and away we went, then every man and his dog started doing firewood and pushed up the cordwood price and made it uneconomic so gave it up for a few years, back to basics now chainsaw and axe and just process what I get off my owned jobs or pickup at the right money. 16. Price it as normal ignore the "we have more work if you give us a good price" its the oldest bull in the book, as next time they want something doing they will try the same on someone else, if it looks like a pia, prices high and if it goes ahead you have some compo for the hassle and if it doesnt your no worse off, wait til people ask for a price on mowing a lawn and then tell you £20 is to much! 🙄😁 Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  17. A quiet work to the boss is the way to go, everyone will covered their owned ass at the end of the day, so best to get in first before you get the blame as the new guy, always tried to deal with direct when I was team leader as its ultimately you who get chewed for overrunning jobs etc, only been accused of being a grass once and funnily enough the lads made sure he had a 50 yard head start on me before he said it to me, few hours and bit of an exchange later he admitted he was in the wrong and bucked his ideas up, not pleasant but when two of you are carrying the third man everytime its not going to be long before someone is going to blow. 18. This was one I build for my folks few years ago, was on an existing concrete base, cut 6 inch solid concrete blocks to level the base and used the concrete block wall for the back wall, planning on similar construction for mine but thinking of using wany edge larch boarding instead. 20. Cheers Paul, I know the wirksworth at the farms been done twice in the last 15 years now got reinforced door, 4 padlocks and cctv and I still dont really trust leaving anything in it. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app

  22. New plan, its now going on the one larger flat area in the garden that was my veg patch, will still give me 12 x 8 and I reckon if I cut the neighbours leyllandi back to the boundary like I did with the greenhouse, I can have a 12 x 2 alcove at the back stepped up over the low retaining wall, which will give a load extra storage space, if theres anyone near to belper, who would like to qoute me for some larch or douglas boards for the cladding I would appreciate, thanks Ed Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  23. Funny we were discussing this the other day and how it was while I was looking for a digger I was dismissing anything over 2500 hrs, when asked I said to be honest its due to the nature of the work they do, I'd quite happily buy a tractor with over 5000 hrs on it but diggers seem to lean towards lower hours, irony is my volvo I bought has 2256hrs on it and has since I bought it as turn out the hours clock has broke, but to be fair given its condition I'd say its right, main thing as with anything is how well its been maintained I looks at some with lower hours and boom could be shook like a skeleton it had so much play in it. 24. I'm going to replaceme the conclude sectional garage I've got with a block one as a more permanent stone but need to get this shed up to move stuff out of the garage first plus stuff from the farm, garden is terraced with stone wall so plan in doing it in wood is that I can build over the step so I will have a slit level shed but it will make 14ft by 8ft rather that 8ft by 6ft if I confine it to the same terrace as the greenhouse is currently on. Sent from my E5823 using Arbtalk mobile app
  25. Ive got to build a shed at home to move all my tools to as my folks are retiringand selling the farm so losing my current storage, planning on building it as basically stud wall frames in 3x2 as I have done one like this before and makes a good strong shed, anyway question is whats best/cheapest way to cladding it for longevity, have used featherboard before but can have problems with warping, was thinking about larch lap?
