    Tractor Spec

As long as speed isn't important I'd go for smaller: lower centre of gravity so more stable and for heavy stuff you've always got low box. Plus lower running costs.
  2. ...and can I be next in the queue? I'm in Caterham (between you and Pembs but closer to you!) Cheers, Jon
  3. It's to do with that yes. It's a specific term under the Land Registration Act. The relevant period has come down to 10 years for periods ending later than 2003. In short it looks like someone else has laid claim to ownership to 2.03 acres of the land you may want to buy. Avoid!
  4. Welcome Gavin. Good woodland management has plenty of scope for the future; best of luck making the economics of it work for you. Jon Caterham
  5. I know hazel can be whippy but I think you're being a bit optimistic looking for 8' lengths of 1/2" stuff. However in December I'm going to be re-coppicing 3 hazels in Oxted that have 8-10 years' regrowth. If you can wait a few weeks I should be able to grab what you're after - but you'll need to be paring down the 1/2" whips from something bigger. Jon
  6. You won't regret it. I have 24" and 30" bars and it's a corker.

    Jokes???

A pregnant prostitute's at the doctor's. Dr: Do you know who the father is? Pros: Jeez - if you ate a tin of beans would you know which one made you fart?
  8. 'Kin dried'?! He's had his brothers n sisters puffing at them!
  9. The Aussie/Kiwi immigration authorities would be less than impressed to hear that should anyone want him back badly enough. No visa = no work there.
  10. A quick Google of 'tree lighting' helps. Very impressive stuff there.
  11. That was the opportunity for your very own 'Chinook removal'! Would have taken the whole tree in one.
  12. See very amateur and defo not 'promo' vid on previous page.
  13. Unless the splits in the bedliner are going to tear the sheet there's no need to worry about a ply board; the sheet runs over the ridged plastic fine. I've never run mine over anything else.
  14. And cheap(ish).
  15. Thorns are surely just modified stems so if you remove the apical dominance by nibbling it off you boost the lateral growth production. No nibbles in the centre of the acacia = little lateral growth. Too simples?
  16. Bringing things back to my level way down here it's so good to see the minimal staking forcing the roots - as you say yourself DavID - to work for a living. How often I see decent young trees forced into motionless bondage that almost does away with the need for the tree to support itself.
  17. You're not wrong! Croydon (then run by Biffa) fleeced me £96 for 915kg of leyland chip a couple of years ago. But I was desperate. And the worst bit? The so-and-so's went and tipped it all over a heap of sofas, wardrobes and other furniture to landfill it! (unless they were firing a power station from Factory Lane, but you'd know whether they were or not better than I). Phew. Needed to get that off my chest...
  18. You won't catch your chain on this one; I use it all the time at home. BRAND NEW LOG SAW HORSE on eBay (end time 11-Nov-10 08:52:52 GMT)
  19. Definitely split the stuff now. Just had to split up some rings of sycamore cut a year ago; they were like iron and it took twice the work to get them done.
  20. That's fantastic info - thanks. A relative has a ?200-year old Western Red that took a big strike some years ago and I'm sure he'd be keen to take any reasonable preventative measures, especially as he's lost two large cedars to lightning and knows of other similar events in the same garden. Cheers, Jon
  21. Was told my the wife last year not to sell all the MP I had because it was such good firewood and she's not wrong. Burns like dry (real) conifer but lasts longer.
  22. If it's to protect the lime tree wouldn't it be better attached to something else nearby?
