  1. Leave it as it is; airflow is everything, even when things get damp.
  2. Why not live with the weight and get a 5-ton machine that will not break and with which you'll be able to pull out the odd stump too? Got mine off the bay for £50 and that included 100' of rope but I doubt you'd find such a bargain now. True Tirfor or Griphoist brands seem to be the most highly rated; I've seen some negative opinions here of the contemporary stuff compared to them.
  3. I was thinking scale too. But is it a problem? Euonymus is such resilient stuff I would be surprised if it is. Also the scale doesn't worry about salt so is also resilient, hiding inside its armour coat. Isn't leaving it a viable option?
  4. When you start pulling the stems off work from the thick end and peel towards the tips; do it the other way round and you'll be there for a week breaking off 6" lengths. Pull down and out; the stems are brittle so will snap if you bend them to 90 degrees. Sorted then; home for tea.
  5. A friend is a member of an archery club that's on the move to East Molesey. They've got the land but it's overgrown with long grass, brambles etc. Guesstimated size is 150m x 40m at its widest tapering to a point. I haven't even seen it myself I'm afraid but if anyone with a Kubota-type tractor and mower is interested pm me and I'll put you in touch with the client. There could be more work later as there is talk of grading some of it and building an earth bank one end. Thanks, Jon
  6. If you need help disposing of it I can assist (re turning). I'm in Caterham. Jon
  7. As previously shown on the 'Beech with ganoderma' thread this one near Horsham went bump in the night and made a sleeping maiden 150+ yards away jump out of bed in fright! Note my phone in the middle of pic1. The lad is a fag paper short of 6', closer to me and further from the tree than seems to be the case at first glance.
  8. I had exactly the same thought; some funny descriptions and gradings in there. 'Yew is 'OK'?! It burns hot, hot, hot and long.
  9. I've been brought up on 'ash and holly are the two woods you can burn green'. Doesn't mean it's a good idea, just that you can do it.
  10. Jon, it's horrible but you did the right thing: you'd have done worse not doing it. Feeling for you but life goes on mate. All the best for the future, Jon (bloody wet Surrey)
  11. He's sold some previously too but they made more money: perhaps he's running out of stickerless tree surgeons!
  12. If you gained work on the strength of being C&G and NPTC qualified when you weren't then YOU would technically be breaking the law (prove it though) but advertising stickers can't be illegal. The guy sells mainly arb stuff and does say in the listing 'CS holders only please'. Perhaps he demands to see tickets before he releases the stickers...? He doesn't say so but he may. In that case it would be like a retailer viewing a CS38 cert before releasing a tophandled saw.
  13. Depends where you are. I'm in the deep south where the leaves are still green and lush so I've done a couple in the last week: I doubt there'll be a problem.
  14. For full satisfaction go back to the willow a year after the work. We did a medium weeping one a couple of years ago (in winter) that didn't look 'weeping' at all when we'd finished with it but a year on I was working next door and spoke to the client; she was made up with the resulting regrowth forming a thin curtain descending from a high crown. My climber had had the foresight to make a nice job of it.
  15. That's because of the sewage outlet that used to be there; made me ill every summer holiday as kid!

    who's the daddy?

Well done Ad and Luce; all the best to the three of you. Jon
  17. Recognised the shingle! Lol. Jon
  18. Exeat Gap? Birling Gap?
  19. Yes - ish! The machines are a great idea and the security aspect is my only concern. Why do they need to store card details for heaven's sake? It's just asking for trouble. Of course perhaps they don't any more but they certainly used to; yobs were ripping them out of shop counters and caning the last 24 hours of card details!
  20. Yes, losing it would be a downside. I may be a bit out of date here but certainly up to about a year ago those machines stored recently used card details that could be retrieved with the right software; that's why stolen ones fetched so much when sold on. Mrs. Miggins may not be impressed at buying several laptops online the day after you'd reduced that nice cherry for her. As I say security within them may have improved but definitely something to assure yourself about before embarking on your electronic venture.
  21. A house just round the corner is called Badgers Bottom and it's only 30 years old. White Knobs Way (Caterham).
  22. I've had Ankalads on my small ladders for years; they're excellent, each side being adjustable both vertically and horizontally. You just set the ladder and adjust each pair of telescopic legs. Having used them so much I don't like the look of the tripod ladders, with just one extra leg. I'm sure I'm wrong to be wary of them but just how stable are they? Seems to me that as soon as you meet a side slope you need to block one of the ladder feet. That's true of an Ankalad setup too but you have two extra feet, spaced far wider that the ladder width, giving you four points of ground contact, not three.

    Stroke

That's rough but you seem very stoical. The fact that you're here 6 days after the event seems to indicate that perhaps the stroke was mild...? I hope so. Whatever happens good luck to you for the best possible recovery.
  24. You'll find some thoughts on the current '130 or Navara' thread! Welcome to the forum. Hope you can both give and take from it. Enjoy. Jon
