  1. Seconded. Takes cutting without a problem, flowers profusely and pollinating insects love it.
  2. have a look at Ankalad stabilisers. They attach to a standard ladder and are more stable than tripod ladders. That said they're a fiddle to open and close and they make the ladder heavier obviously. One thing you can do with them that you can't do with tripod ladders - as I found recently when I bought the latter - is lean forward and sideways. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ankalad&rlz=1C1CHFX_enGB531GB531&es_sm=122&tbm=isch&imgil=XLwkgqhCVxeGaM%253A%253Bhttps%253A%252F%252Fencrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com%252Fimages%253Fq%253Dtbn%253AANd9GcT2nYIhnMidtuID4tb7MqNeRuC88zwerGvRNk5Pl7-5cWQjAX2XDQ%253B496%253B658%253BClJWOk4oLU0-DM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.activemailorder.co.uk%25252Fankalad-ladder-stabiliser-392-p.asp&source=iu&usg=__BMrYPe02-CVaoSMCbX3yIXCi3xU%3D&sa=X&ei=FiWCU8DpIonA7AbQwIGYAw&ved=0CFAQ9QEwCA#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=XLwkgqhCVxeGaM%253A%3BClJWOk4oLU0-DM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.activemailorder.co.uk%252Fekmps%252Fshops%252Factivemailorder%252Fimages%252Fankalad-ladder-stabiliser-392-p.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.activemailorder.co.uk%252Fankalad-ladder-stab
  3. Looks good for Cockspur Thorn on the strength of the patterning on the bark.
  4. Stihl blower went through a TW250 a few months back; no damage to the chipper except the blade edges. The waste site I use regularly have saws, pruners etc go through their Jenz shredder: don't leave tools on top with the chip if you have a tipping truck!
  5. Seconded. Went onto Amazon the other night: the kit...$38. Delivered to my door... £99! I had a thought the other day. If I took the steel cable out of a Halfords puller and replaced it with 3 or 4 wraps of the right thickness rope would that work as an endless rope puller? I'd need to tend the tail to maintain the wraps but I wonder...
  6. = a microcosm of life. The noise comes from a vocal minority: don't worry about them, you have the support of the silent majority. In tree terms you exist on a different plane to me but I'm sure you know what you're on about. Carry on!
  7. Then again I hired a Major for a day re a garden clearance and found it excellent. Yes, hard work on 3/4" stuff but remember it's a portable shredder, not a chipper such as - oh, I dunno - a Treebusta!!!
  8. Is it online? I can't find it but then the site doesn't have a search facility. Ta.
  9. Thanks very much. For the money it looks like it has big potential.
  10. This is a while ago now but if you're there did you buy a Maasdam and do you have any feedback? Cheers.
  11. Thanks for that: I've never seen a rope puller before. Looks like it could be really handy for one man working.
  12. What's that winch/puller? I was expecting to see steel rope, not synthetic. How does the puller grip the rope?
  13. I seem to remember that it wasn't as appreciated by the client though was it Al, more's the pity. Jon
  14. You must be pleased Alex. It's nothing if not original; well done.

    frankensaw

Ha ha. Ask Spud about the Frankensaw he knows. It put years on him...
  16. Not good! So we're opposite ends of the country but good luck with somewhere local.
  17. Then we're going to need a location for you in order to make suggestions...
  18. Thanks Alec. I guess the available sections of stem could be 15" rising to 20+"dia and 15' or so in length: educated guesses those, made from memory. At the moment the clients are making noises about retaining the bottoms of the stems and perhaps having them carved as the trees are a significant part of the local, small landscape, being on the edge of a very small cul-de-sac. Jon
  19. I'll be involved in removal of a pair of near dead specimens in July: the stems are straight so what size is worth keeping for milling? I ask as hiab access is perfect. The next hurdle to cross is finding a mill interested enough in a mere two stems to actually take them. Any hints as to how I persuade them?
  20. A quick play with Google (to see if an air-pot was what I thought it was) took me to Growing Trees & Shrubs in Air-Pots where the Home page claims that Kew and Bedgebury use them. Any help? I remember seeing air-pots on the telly some years ago in use for tree growing in Italy so they're not a brand new idea are they. The verdict on that programme was that they lead to excellent fibrous root development because if a root dares to stick its nose through a hole the tip dies, causing lateral breakout of new rootlets within the pot.
  21. Result - well done. I seem now to remember something being said in the past about wheels cracking; I'd love to have steels. Would such cracks be visible do you know? Is failure likely to be sudden and catastrophic?
  22. Nothing was said about wheels; the recall was purely for the airbag deployment software fix.
  23. Perhaps I misjudged Nissan then: it could be that they've been chasing your vehicle since the fix became available but the previous owner(s) didn't get it done. Sorted now though.
  24. Last week?! The airbag sensor software fix was available years ago; my 57 plate got recalled in 2009 or 2010.
