  1. According to THAT log book lighting a fire low heats but doesn't properly burn wood above the flames in the early stages of the fire. That produces partially combusted compounds that form smoke and are expelled. Burning from the top means there is no wood above the flame and combustion is therefore meant to be more complete as the fire burns slowly downwards. Science innit.
  2. When possible I leave the chipper strapped to the trailer, turn the spout 90° ish and park the trailer across the back of the pickup. That cuts the distance from spout to pickup bed.
  3. Well you did ask! It took a son with a Masters in Computer Science to re-size (?) the pic for me but I'm pleased with the result.
  4. Just something I've never bothered with but I s'pose I could dig something out...
  5. Bingo! User CP > Edit Options > Show avatars! It had become unticked somehow a long time ago, almost certainly due to user error. new guy ti - that is so obviously a Monkey Puzzle stick; how did I not recognise it?!
  6. Thanks but what I'm after is seeing others' avatars, which I don't though I used to, not to put up one of my own. Jon
  7. I thought members' avatars were the little pic that used to show below their details to the left of a post but there are none for me; what am I doing wrong?
  8. The M300 is 145kg, not 120kg, should weight be a major issue. But I drag mine up ramps onto a pickup so it's still feasible. I couldn't do the same with a CS100.
  9. Not personally due to your distant location but putting that in a post will help. I've sold MP to turners on the south coast of your county before now.
  10. Well if I'm going to tread on sensitive toes I'll suggest alternate English and Irish yew.
  11. But then the man is in Ireland so Irish Yew would be 'traditional'!
  12. Ask him for proof of sending. Awkward question...
  13. ...definitely grandiflora Steve...
  14. Hail here too. Looking south from the top of Caterham I could see the South Downs left of Gatwick, couldn't even see the M25 to the right!
  15. Green Plant near Guildford do a 35hp tracked Rayco; if you want bigger it may be worth a trip to Orange Plant near Burgess Hill to get their 70hp Carlton 7015. It's a beast!
  16. Kev, if you've the space and willing to stack those rings on their sides I'll pick them up sometime but it probably won't be till March; I'm committed 3 or days a week for Jan & Feb on a contract just up the road from you! Jon
  17. Sorry to have taken so long to get these up Steve but here are basic pics just to give you an idea. Two pics of an old piece and two of a newer one
  18. If it's non-coniferous chip, i.e. good woody stuff, and in the near future I may well have a field gateway in Caterham you could use. Otherwise my best shot is Greenwaste £12 for clean chip up to a Tranny tipper load, £30 if they have to put it through the shredder. Jon
  19. Am getting database Error but refreshing the page sorts it.
  20. Presumably you're thinking of the dreaded welly option to keep your feet dry. Much better are Mid Weight Mid Length Sock with Hydrostop. Wear them under normal boots and look after the boots, i.e. dry them naturally and treat them.
  21. The bigger straight stuff has been in an untidy pile for about three years now, hence my concern about its condition. The gnarly stuff was cut down about 8 months ago.
  22. I have some twisty, gnarly trunk rings and half rings that I'm really not looking forward to splitting and I have some three year old straight trunk rings about whose condition I am uncertain. The straight rings must be 16+" dia and 12-18" in length. Any good do you think? Jon
  23. Spending money on gizmos like the XSharp seems a bit excessive to me; you're splitting logs with the axe, not shaving with it. I have a gritstone that my dad bought probably 50 years ago and run it briefly over the blade about three times a year and have no issues.
  24. She's got some big lumps there
