  1. How would you get white lithium grease into a hedgecutter head? I can't find the stuff being sold in grease gun cartridges and my Echo trimmer has grease nipples fitted that I'd like to retain. If it's a tricky answer then Spud can you nominate a suitable HT grease that doesn't have a Stihl price tag and comes in small grease gun cartridges? Ta.
  2. Not cheap but for spraying on the cutters this would tick everyone's box wouldn't it? 2 Lithium White Grease Spray Can 3in1 Maintanance Lubricant PTFE Teflon 44016 | eBay
  3. Was on a small managed site in Dorset this morning; 14 species seen in an hour but none in any real numbers. Nothing much out of the ordinary except for half a dozen Small Coppers and four or five Silver-Washed Fritillaries. According to a knowledgeable local gent the site has 3 Hairstreaks resident. With continued good management - not guaranteed as it's private - it could be a special place.
  4. Go Echo Al as that's what you really want; you're too reluctant with Husky to enjoy the 550XP. Live with the bigger 620SX or send a CS 450 to Spud. Not that I know a thing about either saw but I trust the judgement of those who do.
  5. Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar Julian. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/picture-forum/60699-butterflies-etc-10.html Jon
  6. Agreed. I live in an AONB and there are miles of it - 'The Surrey Hills'. There is no tree protection beyond the norm - TPO, CA, felling licence restrictions...
  7. Do it any time at any height; they'll be back like a rash. Two winters ago I reduced several 25' trees to 3' stumps @12-14" thick. You couldn't see the stumps after 3 months.
  8. A bit of a cheat geographically but these beauties are quite common in Central and Eastern Europe; this one in southern Croatia.
  9. I may have misunderstood your question but as the owner of a Harrier 41 that seems to have similar controls... the clutch engage lever is meant to spring back so the mower won't go without someone attached to it; you have to squeeze it against the handlebars to maintain propulsion. I don't use it myself; I reckon that pushing is healthier exercise!
  10. Day and night shots of what I take to be Manna Ash in Croatia.
  11. Something a little different; a cracking show put on by this Manna Ash (I presume) against the boundary wall of Zagreb cathedral a couple of weeks ago. Ugh - they've come out v small.
  12. Cold, wet winter soil then... couldn't be worse!
  13. In this country I'd say they were risking it by doing that. They may get away with it but if we had a hard winter following the hack the regrowth would likely suffer to the point of death. It may be worth pointing out to them that Tamarix must surely be on the edge of its range in this country in any place but a Southern coast: I've lost a couple after 3-4 years in the ground so have given up though I should add that I'm on chalk which is disliked by the plant. Winter wet is a big enemy here I'd say. On balance I'd feel the same as you; cutting back hard is a big risk. What part of the country is this and on what soil is the plant?
  14. Glowing thanks Al - literally. Just got back from 10 days in 35-37 humid centigrade! Jeez am I glad to be back!!
  15. Up to ~£20 for chip I think (7.5 tonner), £12 for Transit. Greenwaste
  16. This chap was miles from cover in the middle of our lawn one afternoon last year.
  17. If you search 'trolley' on here you'll find loads of threads on the subject. Personally I think they're great although I don't use mine as much as I used to. But I have no regrets buying it; it will last me forever and it's proved its worth repeatedly.
  18. Privet? Grows fine and thick if regularly trimmed and one or two things eat it, unlike laurel.
  19. If the fine leaves nearby belong to the tree how about a Rowan?
  20. Some of us will remember it first time round when it was demonised as Public Enemy No.1 in the early 70s. Obviously we didn't deal with it effectively.
  21. Know what you mean but you couldn't complain at the access to that one, unlike most.
  22. The right hand lump. The marbling effect isn't the wood sadly, just a bit of rain. Jon
  23. Kev, let me know when it can be collected and I'll grab it and do the PVA bit. Jon
  24. Put it aside Kev; I'll get there one day! That is mahoosive Cotoneaster; I thought the one we cut a few years ago was big at a piddling 10" dbh.
  25. That number works for me; goes straight to Options.
