  1. I`ve got one pulley saver with a cocoon and one with the plain pulley. I`ve got to say the cocoon is pretty but the pulley retrieves better.
  2. Have a look through this http://www.nptc.org.uk/assets/documents/c3e20eee38b34e17a49ef54f8e2d8819.pdf There`s probably more on risk assessment and emergency planning
  3. Heave occurs when a desiccated shrinkable clay soil re-hydrates, its nothing to do with freeze thaw. I believe it can take years for a very dessicated soil to do this but you would think you might of noticed something after a year.
  4. Ouch, what a mess. Glad you`re reasonably okay.
  5. A useful tip is to make sure when you need to branch roll to ascend the tree you pay out enough rope before you branch roll. If you are above your anchor spiderjack can lock off. If you haven`t payed out enough rope it can leave you stuck in quite uncomfortable positions unable to release the spiderjack....if that makes sense.
  6. It looks like wooly aphid. They can heavily infest the tree. Quite how damaging they are I don`t know. You can remove them with soapy water and a brush.
  7. [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trees-Management-Cultivation-Biology-Comprehensive-ebook/dp/B00FO82S3A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406218952&sr=8-1&keywords=bob+watson]Trees: Their Use, Management, Cultivation and Biology - A Comprehensive Guide eBook: Bob Watson: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store[/ame] This covers lots of stuff. [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trees-Natural-Peter-A-Thomas/dp/0521133580/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406219030&sr=8-1&keywords=Peter+Thomas+trees[/ame] This is also very good for biology.
  8. Just don`t over tighten or you destroy the thread.
  9. It`s certainly in the same league as the 540 and 201. The filler holes are too small. Other than that I can fault it. Its not a 200t but then neither are the other two.
  10. The CT is good. I have a new pantin for my right boot and a CT for my left. I stopped using the pantin. The only issue I have is the strap is starting to wear were it rubs on the metal on my boot. It take a fraction of a second longer to put on and you have to unclip it to get it off but it doesn`t pop out. And it`s cheaper.
  11. Trees - Their use, management, cultivation and biology by Bob Watson is an excellent all round book.
  12. People have been telling them for years to fell it, they don`t seem to want to. I took a huge amount of dead wood out of that for another company about 3 - 4 years ago, it has declined a lot since then. My feeling is it will be dead in another two. You have given your advice, that`s the best you can do.
  13. I`ve not used it but it looks interesting.
  14. If the broken braces are unsightly then cut the cable off without cutting into the tree. The tree will occlude the metal in time without any problems. If the braces do need replacing you are better of with dynamic non invasive bracing which allows some movement. Movement as long as it is not too excessive allows the trees to put on adaptive growth and strengthen themselves. Whether or not new bracing is required and any current in tact bracing needs re -inforcing is a matter for an inspection.
  15. Just watching it now. It`s very good
  16. Remember with stressed limes to always check for Kretz at the base. Whilst crown dieback in lime can be the beginning of decline it can also be a final warning signal.
  17. But it seems 308, 401, 402 and 403 AFAG remain current?
  18. The link on the HSE website says these have been withdrawn. I`m in the process of reviewing our generic risk assessments. Have these two been superseded by INDG317 or are there other reference documents. Thanks
  19. Well, it`s not what I`d choose but if they`re happy then job done . Conifers that are repeatedly topped and left for ages always end up unmanageable in the end. As long as you havn`t left over exposed tops then all else is aesthetic.
  20. Personally I`d have just topped the lot. I sounds like you are exposing stems to wind that are not used to it. The increased oscillation will very likely mean they will fail at some point, if I`ve read your post right..
  21. I Think any system will get clogged by pitch. I have used SJ a lot with the pulley saver. I think the pulley saver is important on sticky trees. SJ doesn`t like sticky ropes any more than hitches. I couldn`t comment on ZZ. I`m waiting for cordless ropes to come in, they would be great.
  22. You probably just got a standard response letter.
  23. Sometimes highways ask for work to be done which `trumps` conservation area. I don`t know where you stand with a verbal agreement however if you can contact the person who verbally agreed they be able to help clear it up. Different areas have slightly different systems but where I am the arb officer gives the nod but the planning officers name is on the letter and deals with complaints. There may just have been a communications gap.
