  1. Do you know the name of the person you spoke to? Don`t suppose you had a letter from highways telling you or the owner to get the work done?
  2. I think it`s only "such compensation ... as it thinks fit." Charles Mynors say "... where a pole or wire is on or over a private garden or other land, presumably the operator is reduced to negotiating with the owner. It might well be that in those circumstances an operator would endeavor to be guided by the code on a non-statutory basis; and the landowner would be well advised to do the same." In short the law is vague. I`m no expert. Whilst you are acting as a responsible person by being aware of the condition of the cables perhaps be careful invoking statute. Whilst BT may for example be able to bill you for damage, whether they can compel you to pay may be another matter. I`m just speculating. The acts are not clear and I`m just reading words out of books

  4. It`s already been said but I`ll say it again. Don`t climb over live lines. I doubt a utility climber would cut that live without an insulated MEWP.
  5. Anyone around the Wiltshire area might be interested in: roland heming forestry and arboricultural training and assessment We`ve used Roland on a number of occasions for training and assessing and I could`t recommend him more highly. We`ve found that he can adapt the training to need depending on ability or just do the assessment and the prices are very reasonable.
  6. We currently have need of a groundsperson to help us through a busy period. Minimum Cs 30, 38 and PPE. Own saw and climbing kit would be an advantage as would drivers license, towing license, chipper ticket etc. The work is on a self employed basis for a couple of weeks with possibility of more work in the future. You will be working for a growing Arboricultural Association approved contractor on domestic and commercial contracts around the Stroud area. All enquiries to Ian Howell on 0800 7569914, 07985060614, [email protected] or contact through the website link below. Thanks
  7. Updated field guide for VTA is an adequate substitute for body language of trees. Body language of trees is unnecessarily complicated anyway.
  8. The branch has split from an included (tight) fork. Included forks are weak areas and are prone to failure. The decay seems fairly superficial to me and unlikely to be a significant factor in the failure in my opinion.
  9. maybe following on from what Steven said. If i was only doing small trees I probably woundn`t both with a SJ
  10. The main issue i found with SJ is when you climb above or parallel to your anchor on big trees it can lock up a bit. Not for taking slack in but letting it out. You have to make sure you have enough slack to branch roll for example.
  11. I`ve started playing with a hitch hiker. I will probably still use the spiderjack, I haven`t found a way to use both together yet. Basically the spiderjack was on my rope and I wouldn`t go to the bother of taking it off for small trees. It works fine. It`s not all about big zippy descents and no slack tending.
  12. when you lift your pantin foot instead of moving straight up use a back pedaling motion. This presses the rope against the solid part and away from the cam.
  13. I have filled out your survey. You may find peoples location useful as different pests and diseases are more or less common in different locations.

We also use the stuff from Clarks.
  15. Sorry to hear about this. It seems that if these people want to get in they will. I hope your brother gets sorted soon.
  16. Fishermans single - Knots Guide | Arbtalk.co.uk Very useful knot
  17. That wouldn`t be reportable, just stick it in the accident book. I think you need five days off for RIDDOR or a serious incident or near miss.
  18. I used to feel this area was pretty safe but we are certainly having to seriously think about deterrents means of catching people or getting kit back.
  19. It seems theres a lot of stuff going missing around the A38 at the moment. I`m keeping my own climbing kit and saw at home now.
  20. It`s becoming boring. We will continue to upgrade security.
