Highway authorities have a duty to ensure that neighbouring trees do not obstruct the highway. They can issue a notice to the owner of the tree requiring them to remove the branches. I think its a section 154 notice

I`d think honey fungus is a likely suspect here. Is there any dead bark you can lift to look for confirmation?

Identification of a problem with leaves on a walnut tree
Alinicoll replied to TonyP's topic in Tree health care
They`re blister galls on the leaf, very common, not serious. I don`t know about the fruit. -

rope wrench spiderjack combo?
Alinicoll replied to Arran Turner's topic in SRT (Single Rope Technique)
How well does that self tend? Do you still keep the spider jack close to your bridge? Does the rope wrench not get in the way when pulling the rope from above? I`m quite interested in this setup. -
Theres a whole load of variations between just doing physical work and being a manager. At some point you may wish to do something that an academic qualification helps with. Personally I have no intention of being a manager however, it is unlikely that I will be running around up large trees for ever. Having the qualifications to do work other than climbing gives more options; surveying, consulting, tree officer etc and yes, being a manager too. You will find it much harder later on to get on an academic course and complete it. However, with a qualification you can still get practical experience as well.
-
If you have the chance to study then I would do so. You will find it helpful in the long run.

Who's got/doing the professional Diploma
Alinicoll replied to MATTMOSS's topic in Training & education
Remember the Professional Diploma and the newer level 4 diploma are not the same thing. The old Professional Diploma is now the level 6 diploma. The newer level 4 diploma is more of a tech cert equivalent. The level 4 diploma is well worth doing. It does take up a lot of your life which is particularly taxing for those with children and businesses but you will find it an excellent entry level qualification into consulting covering a reasonably wide variety of subjects. If you are prepared to put the time in then it is time well spent. -
Fungi identification and its impact on this tree.
Alinicoll replied to Tommy Hutchinson's topic in Tree health care
It looks like Polyporus squamosus - Dryads saddle - David Humphries’s Fungi Directory - Arbtalk.co.uk | Discussion Forum for Arborists It is often just confined to dysfunctional tissue i.e. the area behind the wound. Probably given the targets I would want to get up there and have a poke about to see how extensive any decay is. -
I don`t use a wire core line but I do always back up with my main line. I wouldn't chog with a single anchor.

Is this regarding a specific TPO or a general question?
-
I`m lucky enough to have been taught by Jack three times and he taught the people who inspired me to get into tree work as well, he's a legend. Certainly he`s the most clear concise teacher I`ve experienced and entertaining too. A well deserved retirement.
-
The criteria is for amenity value so it should be publicly visible but it doesn't have to be in its entirety. The TEMPO system is normally used to identify if a TPO is defensible or not.

I agree, drink water, lots of it. It`s too easy to not notice you are getting dehydrated when climbing. In some ways when it`s hot at least you notice you are thirsty. You can still get dehydrated when its cold too. If you go for a pee and it looks like beer at the end of the day then you need to drink more

In the past I`ve noticed differences with same species at the top and bottom of hills opening at different times. No pictures though. I remember Hawthorn blossom doing that.

By using it left handed I mean you operate the device with one hand using thumb to control descent and fingers to release the cam. As I`m right handed if I need to descend or let rope out with the left hand, when reaching for example, it can be tricky and takes some getting used to, not that it happens that often or I would probably be better at it. It`s difficult to use right handed to start with for the same reason, you need to learn how to coordinate the thumb on the wooden brake and then let the cam off with your finger or you go whoosh. I hope that makes sense. Re rope diameter, I was using 13mm yale XTC and am now on bluetongue which is thinner. Of the two the blue tongue is far superior
