  1. If you buy direct from the manufacturer they are cheap the problem is all the middlemen who keep adding there 200% markup until you get a product costing more than real logs.
  2. I log in as normal and it comes back with a screen as though I have not bothered logging in. after doing this several times I just gave up clicked forum and low and behold I am already signed in as renewablejohn. Now I just sign in and ignore the duplicate sign in screen and go straight to forum. Sometimes have a hiccup when I come to post because although it says I am signed in it will ask again to sign in and in the process lose the response I was wanting to post
  3. I hire my machine out but only with operator as it is so easy to ruin a blade if you dont know what your doing. Cost of replacing a blade would be more than the hire is worth.
  4. What a waste surely it could have been chipped and go for biomass.
  5. Please tell me more on these FC grants. I planted 2 acres and get approx £100 per year.
  6. Only found these stoves after I had already purchased my Esse. If I could turn the clock back I would have bought the Warmsler instead of the Esse as the quality is so much better and the heating more controllable. Only found out about them when looking to buy another house that had one installed for over 25 years and the whole house was very toasty as well as doing all the cooking.
  7. I suffer badly with poor circulation in my feet so much so that when its cold I always get very bad chill blades. Last year I discovered Sealskinz socks not cheap at approx £30 a pair but well worth it. I even have warm feet in this cold weather
  8. Makes very good biomass for CHP plants if you can ring the trees 6 months before you chip. Looks ugly prior to chipping and can be a fire hazard because the timber is so dry
  9. From my point of view there are to things wrong with that type of polytunnel for drying wood. First the plastic does not go all the way to the ground so the weather can get in all around the edges and if located on a like we are the wind would get underneath and rip the roof off. Second you need to think how your going to get the timber in and out. We use a forklift with a 2 mtr float mast but that design has cross bracing which you will always be ducking and invariably forget damaging the tunnel. Far better to have a slightly narrower tunnel with no cross bracing to catch. Our tunnels are built with a 1 mtr slope from one end to the other to remove hot moist air without the need for fan assistance. Can be 10C difference in temperature from one end to the other because of this.
  10. If you want something cheaper then how about a WW2 style Nissan hut made from polytunnel hoops, steel sheets and exhaust clamps.
  11. Until the Renewable Heat Incentive gets onto the statute books I would take government intentions with a pinch of salt. The last time I looked the only approved boiler so far for use in a smokeless zone was a Dunsley Yorkshire which having installed my own last December I would recommend to anyone as it does precisely what it says on the tin and is very economical.
  12. If you ask any questions you have on the Navitron forum you will get a lot of independent advice about the various government proposed schemes.
  13. No use looking for Peckerwoo, he new what was coming so has obviously gone south to a sunnier climate.
  14. Andy Whilst I agree that there are a lot of briquettes out there which are rubbish if made correctly with fine enough material and high density then any briquette will retain its shape in the fire. Problems arise with low density and wet material as the moisture turns to steam and breaks up the briquette. As for claims that bricks last longer with a hole in them it is normally found to be the reverse as the hole produces a larger surface area for burning than a similar weight briquette with no hole. From my own experience with our own manufactured solid briquettes we bank up our Esse range at 11pm and it stays in everynight for reloading at 8am in the morning. We started using briquettes as we were fed up of having to relight the fire when were using hardwood.
  15. UK figures are available from Defra for forestry products. Ofgem have the figures for woodchip used in power stations and DECC have figures for waste wood for burning in WID compliant plants which varies annually between 8 million tonnes and 12 million tonnes. But I would presume the council already have these figures. For our CHP calculations for every 10,000 tonnes of woodchip we require 600 hectares of forest to make it sustainable. This assumes total clear fell not just round wood production.
  16. Theres a unimog for sale for £4950 that will guarantee deliveries no matter how much snow you get. Plant No wonder there are no gritters on the road there is 3 available here
  17. Its a better rate than I have just received. Local tree surgeon had his chipper written off by a car so I took pity and as a favour I allowed him to use my heizohack chipper and me as groundie for £100 per day. After 4 days work no money and still waiting to be paid one month later.
  18. briquettes made from shredded paper. I got bored making briquettes from softwood so experimented with shredded paper.
  19. I thought it was just my customers that do this. 3rd email tonight for further information just for 1 cubic mtr.
  20. Its a rip off scheme introduced by the government which stipulates that if you want to gain the government cash for Feed In Tariffs or Renewable Heat Incentives then your system must be installed by a MCS approved installer. The effect of this already on Solar voltaic installations has been a sharp rise in the cost of installations to the extent that a MCS installation can now be twice the price of a similar DIY system.
  21. Yes dont forget the rip off MCS scheme created by the government to stop people paying a reasonable price for a boiler installation. Instead only MCS (monopoly) "approved" contractors can install at extortionate prices if you want to claim the renewable heat incentive which is still to be announced by the government.
  22. I think its the first time ever that the rest of the country has snow and we have not even seen a snowflake. Pretty frosty though
  23. Check the pulling strength of the cable its no use having a 5 tonne winch with a 1 tonne cable.
