  1. Chip prices are bound to go up. A small scale 250kw CHP gasifier will use approx 8 cu mtrs of chip per day.
  2. Justme Thanks for the link. In category 2 were it refers to a diameter that is allowed to be cut is there a definition as to what height off the ground you take the diameter measurement.
  3. Are you allowed to say "death to biomass" on a forum full of biomass workers.
  4. Mine should be on a boat from the USA. What are you going to do with your woodgas unit.
  5. We dry our sawdust on black corrugated tin sheets resting on builders trestles in our polytunnel. Once the moisture content is below 15% we sweep the sawdust into IBC containers with the tops chopped off for storage. We have a forklift with rotator so emptying is no problem. Before we had the forklift we used to store in 45 gallon drums the ones with the removable lids.
  6. So long as its less than 15% MC then minimum of £5 tonne. As for Bristol the multi national company refused to sell the plant and equipment so it all fell through. With the way the recession is going I am quite pleased it did as it would have been a large liability.
  7. Either that or sell it to somebody like me who already has a briquette and pellet press. You can get approx £250 per tonne for briquettes and the cheapest briquette press is 10k but the quality will not be great. For a quality press you can easily spend 60k. If it was me for that sort of money (10k) I would install a small gasification plant and generate renewable energy both electric and heat. With government incentives for ROC's and the proposed RHI it could be a good little earner.
  8. Its a bit like baking bread. You have the same ingredients but for some unknown reason every loaf is different. Moisture content is critical and needs to be between 8-12% anymore and the die blocks up and then its a strip down drill out 500 holes and reassemble. Your sawdust will probably need refining but a good quality pellet press will have a built in refiner. Even when you have created your pellet it needs to be cooled and dust extracted. Finally it needs to be kept perfectly dry normally by sealing in plastic bags but I use plastic pharmaceutical barrels as I could not guarantee quality in plastic bags due to traders storing outside even when instructed that the bags had to be kept in the dry. I produce both pellets and briquettes and given what I know now then briquettes are far easier then pellets and I sell both at similar prices per tonne.

  10. I would have a problem with that as the wood we use for burning has to be virgin while wood for horse or cat litter can be recycled timber but can only be burnt in WID compliant burners.
  11. If you design a polytunnel correctly you can get the same result without needing a fan.
  12. I can produce pellets for both horse bedding and cat litter it all depends on the price people are prepared to pay as I have a set minimum price per tonne that I need to achieve. We are also experimenting with dried grass pellets for horses made from our meadow hay.

  18. I would be to embarrassed to post pictures of there handy work. I think butchers would be a more apt title for them rather than engineers.
  19. If you are talking about synthetic coal made from wood it is called Torrefied wood. It is made by cooking wood in an oxygen free environment at temperatures between 220C to 280C depending on process. The two main methods of producing torrefied wood are the use of a torbed reactor or a thermal oil plate dryer. Once the wood has been cooked it is put through a hammer mill and then pelleted. Typical cost starts at approx £1.2M for the torbed system
  20. Dont do it you will kill yourself. Wood smoke is a killer if in a confined space such as your container. Please do some research on professional kilns and you will see the safety features which are built in.
  21. Make sure you get a written quote for the work. I have just been turned over by a very well known engineering company converting my MB Trac for forwarding use.
  22. If it is the head gasket you should be able to get away with just taking the head and exhaust pipes off. You will however need besides the head gasket new exhaust gaskets and a rocker cover gasket. When you torque the head down make sure you tighten in the correct sequence and to the right torque setting.
  23. Why not use the chip yourself. With the present dash for green energy the return is far better than tree surgery and you can even earn cash while your fast a sleep.
  24. Make sure you deal with the stone drain as you could end up with more water than you bargained for.
  25. Sounds to me like a head gasket leaking into the cylinder. Test by filling up with water and when the engines warmed up put a wad of paper towel over the exhaust. If its wet with steam then the gasket has gone. Any external leaks over time will produce a tell tale brown rust stain which you should be able to trace back to the source. Have you checked the pressure cap spring and seal are still working.
