  1. Standard fee I pay for arb waste is the offer of a brew. Tree surgeons know they can use my farm as a free woodchip disposal site and can off load timber as well. Normally saves them the effort of dragging it back to their base.
  2. In Sweden I saw a wooden house using a Masonary stove with the logs dried in the upstairs loft. The house had a grass sod roof for insulation. The ceiling was slatted to allow the heat to rise and there was far more beams than normal to hold the weight of the logs.
  3. Why do you think they use oak beams in old houses its not for the structural strength but its ability to withstand fire with normally just the outside inch charred.
  4. You would be surprised how much birch I have received FOC because it is classed as worthless and goes mouldy.
  5. So now everyone knows how to dry birch without it going mouldy the price will go up. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
  6. Just remember it is easier to split green rather then when its dry so make the size of the billet such that it only needs cutting to length which is easy with a tungsten tip saw.
  7. My processor cuts upto max 12 inch so anything less than 12 inch is processed straight away into logs and put into the solar kiln whilst oversize is split into billets and put into the solar kiln. Then when you run out of dry split logs you can carry on with dry billets.
  8. Is it not a flat stone grinder for mounting horizontally I dont think there designed for mounting vertically.
  9. Very pro British. Went round the museum in the harbour and the bell from the aircraft carrier that relieved Malta during the war was on display. Just said to the wife I am surprised your dads bell is still here after all this time and the next thing was we where swamped with very grateful locals all with a story to tell and the gratitude towards us was overwhelming. Shame really as we had booked the holiday for her dad but he died a month prior to going.
  10. If your hedge cutting and have a bonfire going head into the bonfire smoke. Works for bees as well as wasps.
  11. We used to root prune to bonsai christmas trees grown in pots
  12. Been looking all over for a Kalle type gasifier without any joy for the last 5 years then on holiday in Sweden found one in a motor museum. Unfortunately the guy would not sell so still searching.
  13. I have started using what3words to accurately locate where I am in any particular wood. Whenever I change location I just text the new location 3 words so at least they know where to find me even if I have no signal.
  14. Chestnut palings will not stop kids. We have a local manufacturer in Manchester who would do me a "special" with only 2 wires instead of 3 which is child proof as they cannot use the middle wire to climb over.
  15. Is East Halton to far away. Would still be a charge but only £25 per load.
  16. Anyone used one of these yet if so are they any good. Was thinking the shortest bar would be the most controllable.
  17. Well if you have more than a few bags you could chip and extract in bulk using this.
  18. Chip into tonne bags and leave for 2 years then collect and sell as soil conditioner.
  19. Just make sure you have a roll of trans tape handy if it does start to rip it will save the tunnel for quite a while.
  20. Thats what I put on this time last year on a 40 mtr tunnel and its already splitting in 2 places on the folds. Once the guy from visqueen has inspected it will be repaired with trans tape both internally and externally.
  21. Would certainly be interested as it makes quite a difference in storage capacity. I can get 100 IBC's in my 25 mtr normal polytunnel whereas the straight sided of the same length holds 150.
  22. End hoops are all braced so should not be a problem. As for plastic it is Jumbo rolls they use and reroll to the cut length requested. I think its the rerolling which is the problem as its the centre core of the roll which splits first. I have one straight sided and I do prefer them but they dont come up for sale very often and I dont buy new.
  23. I think the difference is there is only 2 of use so we have to let gravity do the work whilst keeping the sides secure so that the wind cannot get underneath it. Have experimented this time with a doorless end with plastic wrapped around end bar and tensioned to first bar. Looks good but time will tell. I dont get on well with doorways and forklifts they never seem to be wide enough or high enough so hopefully this is the solution.
  24. This one only a little single span baby on wooden side rails the only complication the incorporation of a shade sheet on the first 4 bays. Took us 2 hours to put on and 4 hours to fasten down the sides. Lengthways will be fastened tomorrow leaving it with weights on overnight. Forecast another good day tomorrow so you have no excuse for getting one done.
  25. Plastic is always fresh from the suppliers but I wonder how long it has been sat on there roll before they have cut it off. My suspicion is that it is to sharp a fold as on the 40 mtr tunnels we always unroll the same way and have noticed the splitting starts from the end that was nearest to the centre of the roll. The last tunnel where splits occurred was the most noticeable with 2 folds splitting at different points on the first 20 mtrs the remaining 20 mtrs absolutely perfect and would have lasted at least another 3-5 years. Perfectly still day today. Bet you cant guess what me and the other half are upto today.
