Really? Reading this post sounds you are being bloody minded. If you can't justify increasing your fuel bill then don't buy it is the answer. In my experience (over 4 years) of using Aspen I would never go back to using ordinary unleaded. The benefits outweigh the costs for me. It's a cleaner fuel and that's proven not simply assertions to make you buy it. Campers use the 4t version in their stoves as it's actually cheaper (I don't know which stoves they use but apparently Aspen 4t is almost half the price).

Someone put me into this forum/blog thing the other day.... looks really good and was sort of what I was hoping to achieve with treet.org ....but I have to say this site is far (far) better! Worth registering as it's free and looks very slick. Looks to be pretty new. See what you think.

Nice to see they are as scared of softwood there as they are over here!! I mix hardwood with the softwood, sell a little bit cheaper than hardwood only and this makes up 75% of sales.

Just had a look at Arbtrader and its a nice clean looking site. £5 is a very good price for adding pics. What I don't get is someone is selling something for say £1250-00. Why not make it £1260-00 make another £5 and put your pics in!

I've done a fair bit of internet research Alec (I'm sure you'll point me right) that if you use an oil on wood and polish it the outer layer polymerises and forms a barrier. From what I've read the best oils to use are walnut oil and coconut oil for treating boards. I've been using walnut oil for the last 6 months and it seems to work well. Again from what I've read walnut oil does not go rancid in the wood compared to other vegetable oils. And it's very unlikely someone who have a reaction to it given the first point above.

My sales are very slow.... but they always pick up when it gets colder and I always sell out... this year will be no different to any other.

It's a cracking forum Steve and because it has been successful you're maybe having to deal with more complaints etc .... I think it will always be evolving... The other day when the Stihl online policy thread was up I googled 'Stihl online selling policy' and arbtalk thread was at number 5! That's pretty impressive.

I reckon it's a superb idea Justin. A lot of domestic users shy away at paying to do CS30 but a 1 day course they'd stump up the cash for. At least that gives them some basic knowledge. You could book people in as they came in for a saw or if they spent over a certain amount give them a discount off the course. A much better proactive approach - I like it a lot

I remember a few years ago had a knock at the door at 6.30am.... thought who could it be. Bleary eyed I opened it and there was two policemen. "We've found a chipper abandoned 2 miles down the road and dropped by to make sure it wasn't yours." It wasn't but I felt well chuffed they had dropped by. That is proper local policing IMO.

Very nice Rob the brown in the ash is usually called olive ash... Bench looks good - big solid stuff like that's my favourite to make even though it's a pain to move it around.

Take your time on quotes and get to know the customer. Send quotes in by writing if you can on headed notepaper...

Your title says it all - what's your business plan? To become a larger tree firm? What jobs are you looking to go for after this expansion? I have learnt the hard way - identify your market first - then invest in the equipment to meet that demand. Personally I would never have a business partner. It may last 5 years, 10 years or even 20 but like a marriage it goes sour more often than happily ever after. But that's just me!

I pick up waste logs from other tree surgeons - and turn into firewood or planks.

I have plenty of dry beech but it's in lengths 2.4m by 20cm and 2" and 3" thick. You could prob find a but this wide and long but would prob have a few splits and cracks in it.

I've taken part in a few debates after looking at your videos Daniel. IMO a lot of the flak you receive is not down to the vids but the way in which you present them and talk about them afterwards. The above quote is a good example of this. It's this sort of statement that makes people defensive and go on the attack (not that it's any excuse for personal comments directed at you). I always watch your vids and enjoy them even if I don't agree with the techniques all the time.... ....

I used to climb on may own (with a groundie) when I was less experienced. Now I'm more experienced I always climb with someone who can do aerial rescue - you'd think it would be the other way round.... If you asked yourself this question - you're helping out a friend in their garden. If you have an accident in the tree and you're knocked out or can't get down by yourself - what's the plan? The only person who can help you is another climber. Most of us bend the rules, assess risk and make decisions not totally inline with HS. I'm one of them. But these days I always do any climbing with a another climber on hand.

I've enjoyed watching X factor this time around... ...er nothing to feel that ashamed about ok maybe a little! I bet there's plenty more on here that watch it and won't admit it!

I agree - he can't sing... but I think Simon and Gary have a 'soft' spot for some of the lads sometimes.... I mean look at that mate Steve who won it that year and couldn't sing at all... ... he had plenty cosy evenings round the dinner table with Simon though!!
