  1. Hi Chaps First let me say, ive read the first page of replies and the top of the second and then thought this was going off on one so if i repeat what any one else has said im sorry frthe repotiion. First, and formost.. WELL DONE HAMADRYAD, seriously it takes guts to hold your work up for other critisisum, i salute you. the thing i find interesting about this thread is it, to me summs up the aim of the arb assosiation, 'to advance the ART and Science...........' the reson i say that is when i look at the pics its a bit hard to fully judge never tha same as bing there looking, but also thay are shot from differant aspects, but the SCIENCE of cut placement is fine, it would pass a CS40, the retained shape is accepterble, etc in terms of ammout removed it would be behond what 3998 gennerally suports but the 'science' is ok, not spot on but ok but then the ART, this is wear i think paths have diverged, what one sees as a good job another sees devisattion, and this is were arb is interesting, take all the peopple in this room and get them to do the same job they will all be difefrant, go even further, give them all exactly the same spec and there will be many 'interpriations' just like art. and of cource we must not forget the customer driven approach hear. what they whant v what you do an interesting ethical dilema??? and one that is hard to answer, the customer is always right, except when they are wrong??? just my thoughts. the job, my personal opinion good shape, but a little heavy handed for me, but agin well done this sorst of debate is what actually helps people understand some of the difficulties in an industry that does indeed have an artistic 'bent' to it. cheers kevin

  10. what ooohhhh one and all Happy new year, lots of snow, and sunny too. new 38 is a breeze, the only slight hickup is the ident needs a bit of tweeking, but worth wile add in. as for all those worries about spiking eachother to death etc, what are you all worrying about??? spiking has been a requirment for many years, it should have been taught, and was not, it should have been assessed and was not by many. spike rescue was always my fave 'assessor chosen' assessment esp if a bit wet, and 3 person rescue my 2nd fave. it adds no time at all if any thing it shortens it, if anything what adds time is students who haev not been taught or dont turn up with the gear. i am a tad impatient about this, its in there it should be done. opps rant over, but that bit is a breeze. as for using the dummies, we have an interesting dicotomy there the nptc assessment sheduel says ‘The casualty’ must be a trained climber, but does not necessarily have to hold a certificate of competence in tree climbing and aerial rescue. However, the assessor must be satisfied that the operation will be conducted safely, (risk assessment) and we have been told catagorically you cannot use a dummy, yet other bodies for whom we train/assess insist on dummies being used?? go figure. so we have some pricy rescue dummies that are not fully utilised?? ho hum these are what we have and are very good Products | Ruth Lee Ltd. cheers kev

  13. OHHHHH AHHHHHHH round and round and round we go. for my money the issue is legaslative and best practice, you see basic science most of the polymers etc thet you and my ropes are made from deteriorae from the day they are made, some things slow that doen some speed it up, it is just a mater of existance. then you have phisical things that make big differances, abrasion v cuts. and even top bods get things wrong, my fave from history is the nice guy from ici drinking 245d ......... saying this is safe!!!!!!! guys stop bikering, in answewr to the issue about why do inspectors have differing opinions, well in part when they were taught...... and in part what Mr Ed...Ar said, misinformation. a long time ago john harroway, a real gentlman of this industry said to me always go back and cheak from time to time as 'you may start to belive your own propigander' also just a lack of info, that relates to how things wear. So Ed Arb is collating info on how things behave when worn, great, even better get it peer eviewed and published, a mate of mine did a thing with crabs and never got it peer reviewed thus nearly usless but very very interesting. and as a final thought, inspection should not be about removing dangerouse stuff from use. it is actually about preventing it getting in to use, and age, as a part of that is about forseeability of how an item will perform when you most need it, say in a fall. ohh yes and really finally i wonder if the guy from petzl is the sam guy who said to me the problem with obsolecence is we just dont know yet how long some things will last, with every day that passes we learn morr from the many items we have in store at this point the best advise we give to people is based on some very goo science, excellent machinery and a little bit of a guess, but we like to call i and educated estimate...... with regard to the seat belts i think that is liek the tree falling in the woods question.......... what is interesting about it is one of the largest notifying bodies in the UK for seatbelt webbing is also a significant tester for PPE kev psd happy new year
  14. SAFE- dont endanger you assesor, other people or property PROMT- there is a time limit as if people take too long it is not a worthwile award EFFECTIVE- parrel hinges, correct sequewnces falls were its ment to correct knowleg all that at a level 2............................. kev

  16. in hte past ive tryed all sorts but keep cpmming back to chicken wire kev
  17. In one way Tree equip i agree, but ihave worked in the college sector and know what marketing departments are like in there rush to get stuff out just look at any mag, journal euro arb even this very good site, and you can see people showcasing there ability and championing their skills above others, but is is always easy to find fault (must be said Mysco did make it easy for us) even as an assessor the trick is to find a reason to pass a candidate not to fail them as finding fault is easy. i feel for the college as there but for the grace of god........ i know on some of the stuff we have put out i sit there after going chin strap, tumb etc etc kev
  18. to each their own but then if you dont make reprensentation dont complain this is the same reson i always vote at elections kev
  19. ?? what you whant chapter and verse?? ps as for the SAS and others of HM forces they are specifically exempt from most hse legislation during times of war or specific practice in preperation for such deplyment BUT only operational ie sas forget the fig 8 oftern do rapid deployment with gloves n leather sleve as do marines what back up!!! but look at the storage of fule on a base and wow you whant to see legal conformaty. frankly in reation to bobs erlier question i use an ID or backed up 8 PS BOB hows the jet boil??? ended up buying one my self what a great bit of kit!!! kev
  20. give them a break chaps the reccomendations changed this year. this leaflett will have been produced by the marketing team with help from the cources office, by the time the arb team get to see it the leaflett will be with thousands of people and the arb team will be crting about the image the pics show, if next year it has not changed then well we havea BIG dig then kev
  21. for use in a ppe situation (not fun on a rock face etc) so at work it is a legal requirment. simple, no if's no but's no maybe's its simple the law says for inductral purposes must have fail to safe kev ps so does best practise
  22. hello chap

    kev

  23. there are 2 that i know of were in the uk is he i canot give out numbers but will pass on to him
  24. hi ill try and keep this short. the manufactures information is king. look at the maximum lifes on the paperwork that should come with any item of PPE and it wii 99 % of the time have an obsolence period. in the absence of that for textile ppe the rule of thumb is max 5 year work 10 year shelf what ever you get to first ie 9 years in the box still only one year working. the assessment of items by an arb loler inspector is based on visual so he will be looking at phisical conditions, and rules like age, but so many people throw there instructions away it makes life hard. as a user YOU have a duty to retain pertinant information, ie that big lable attached to the harness when you buy it. im a bit imbarresed for the inspector who could not find the date!! but if it was the first time he had seen that harness he may not know where the label was cheers kev
