  7. one hopes it is just a collge thing, you hear these rumors oftern, but there is no valid reson for the instructor not to show them unless he was bound by college rules or could not tie one i do dispear at this propogander that creaps arround, but then going for ce marked is not a bad thing kev

  9. Hodgie First things first, for your assingment. go to the web sites and crunch the numbers, compaire weight (dry) cc output power (KW) vibration out put noise out put fule tanks size and consumption. chain speed at sam RPM maximum rpm if quote dpower to weight chain break speed then get a bit logical, how many uk dealers i nthere networ, or near you, all very well having a saw but if you have to wait days for spares its no good. then phone a local dealer and ask them cost of standard winter sevice and some common parts orriginal part bar and cahin of same size. cluts complete, sproket complete (same sort ether rim or spur) and full set of AV's and patten part. then when you have compared alll those quantative facts look to the qualative, all the stuff mentioned here. for my money the 346xp is a far superiour saw to the 260, especially when 6 months old. i find the 260 slow and on pic up unreliable when a bit worn, i also find the 260 has a tendency to stall and the off switch unreliable after 12months or so i also find that the 260 chain break is not as quck as the 346 and wears out a lot quicker as do the sprokets and clutch drums. having said that i find the 260 break band easy to repair as well as the other parts that go wrong on the brak system and the sproket/clutch drunm a walk in the park to change. on the 346 i agree that the combined system is not as good as the 260 but that is why stlth pattened theres asap. aslo i find genuine spares on huski a little punchy, the other thing is because of there higly tuned engine the pot and piston are less forgiving to the user who reves the nuts out of them, but ive seen many stl n hsk jammed solid. nice touch on huski greasing through the crank end for the needle bearing, the genuine bar a little narrower than the stil. having said all that if we were talking top handeled saws there is still no real comperotor for the ms200t aka 020, but the huski is getting better, still be my number 3 ohh and yes jonsered are part of the Electrolux group same as huski cheers kev
  10. This item would not be CE marked and is thus iligal to sell in the UK and europe, also illigal to use for work but having said that i used an old orriginal loud slow and damm dangeouse kev
  11. 12. The odd thing with insurance is it depends who you ask. those nice people at the tax office will tell you that any subbie, be them bonafida or labour only must have their own insurance as part of their proof of self employed status. One assumes quckthorn already carries some insurance, say public liability, and you may add a training descrption on to that, but an extra 3oo for that seems a lot, especially if you are very specific with the addition ie if you spell out what you will teach. if however you were designing the cource conten, delivery and mesuring of outcomes your self (whitch it sounds like you were) you would be well advised to carry profesinal indemnity. the PL is if someone herts them selves, eg cuts finger, the PI is if you teach them somthing dangerouse (or miss it out ie look out for power lines and they go and fry them selves at a later date) we all know insurance can be crippelining, and it seems that because of some high profile accidents during training in ecent years the cost keep going up. one would say the council coule have chosen to add you to cover eliments of your teaching to their policy, but ultimatly the obligation is with you to have insurace against secondary claims. this does happen and i was an expert witness in just such a case last year, the instructor as it terns out was not covered by his insurance as he had not declare things correctly and he found himself almost bancrupt. the short answer is just make sure you are covered for exactly what you do, have a good broker and make sure you negosiate with them and give them loads of info so they can get the best deal. the down side is that people loose out to great experiance due to burocracy. you could consider joining LANTRA or BTCV and running such cources through them?? kev
  13. look at the small print of cs50.... the tree size is limited, this qual is amid , as it has already been said at working soley from the ground, and soley on smaller trees, where risk is less than very big things in the middle of the woods. the addition of the assisted fell is a requirment of the QCF (government stuff) and it is arguably subtley differant from UA2.2 as in UA2.2 the rope is to prevent the tree falling back on to power lines, in cs50 it is part of an assisted fell, so pressure to pull the tree over will be needed. to be honest all assessors had a chance to comment on variouse eliments of these new quals, but there are all sorts of bits that they are not happy with, but some bits forced through for many resons. CS50 was designed innitially to address some eliments of the QCF, to address some feed back from innisial 2 consultations, and to address, a very significant sector, that was putting teams at risk and avoiding 32,34,35 as allegidly it did not affect them. namley the hunders of highway guys out there who get a cs 30, may be 31 and then have there bosses send them out in storm situations to get rid of 'small ' dangerouse trees over highways. now its not perfect, nothing in life is, well except my wife??? but as i understand it does meet what it needed to do. only time will tell if it is a runner or a chocolate tea pot cheers kev
  14. Monkeyed it was going to be me but alas i cant help them out this time, i have no idear who it is going to be but there are only about 20-25 people arround who do it. thay are really on the money, and know their stuff, just depends weather you relate to their teaching stile.
  15. hehehehehehe i love these posts chaps, the only new unit in this lot is the cs50, all the other units are revised versions of existing qualification. and remember one mand meat is another mans poisen, so one person may thing cs 48 is a joke but if you have never used one befor and need to show you can do it safley why not, just remember there is more than one way to prove competence it is just some ways are easier than others kev

  18. lee try looking for MACRO nutrients (the NPK) of this world and MICRO nutrients the principals of horticulture are a good book to look in too
  19. Hi All ive just been reading this thread through and im going to try and make some comments. To put this in perspective i am the immidiate past chair of the AA Prof commitee, a fellow of the AA, and have a deul role from my employer and the AA on some differant groups. Add to that mambership of other bodies shuch as RFS, IOSH, icf, tcia etc and it all adds up to a big bill come november. none of the bodies i belong to are perfect, all of them, including the ones that are non tree related seem to have at least two 'tribes' eg iosh/rospa/nebosh, now these folks are good at in fighting at an astounding level. My support lies with a.good quality, b.safe tree work done at c. a sensible, sustainable price that allows for a and b to be continually improved. i go to rfs events and have attended icf events, im off to a tcia doo in a couple of days, the one thing that runs through every thing i go to is that no one size fits all. now every body is entitled to an opinion and a way to express it in a resnoble way. jsust saying there *** is not really that. the AA, in my opinion do a resnoble job, they are, yes a trade assosiation, who are able to offer an allied charter, but they are a prof trade assosiation. they do listen and do try and reflect a majority view of issues from the ylady planting seeds in the nursary to the ecologist tree man hunting bats in a veterain tree, and every thing in between, as afterall is that not arboriculture, ' the propergatin establishemntans care of trees of an aminity value' ??? no for my sins i sit on a couple of comittes that are related to training funding etc, but really at the grass roots level of trees and timber related stuff, were govenment set rules and we try to build meninful direction for the sector. you know they are hell, they are tediouse, slow, buracratic, tied in acronyms and procedure, I do this for a large employer and also the aa to whom i have to report back to. why as i love the trees and timber sector, and many bodies are trying to steer things in the best direction that can be found. i am happy to do this for those resons, because ever man or woman who enters the trees and timber sector has a right to a resnoble career wit hresnoble skills and knowlege developed by appropriate training experiance etc. now im much happier in the woods craking over some large trees (just like cpl weeks ago big big sitka in north norfolk) but this commitee stuff is the seeds of stuff that help us all. why do i mention this particually wel lbecause this is the sort of stuff that has to be done , and the majority of peole in the sector dont get involved in, but the aa and some others have, for you each and every one of you member or not and for that bodies like the aa should be aplauded. now having done the posotive bit, lets give a balanced view, by far the best organisation for communication i belong to is IOSH how ever they are also the most arrogant!!!! the AA as much as it pains me to say it are really quite pants at letting peole know all the good stuff they do, and also some times get involved in things were they would be better served giving it to other bodies to represent, when chair of prof com we had this issue and it was hard to prise it from members and make them give it to another body, managed it but not always. some of the most relaxing days ive had have been on rfs days out, now if you whant to see an old boys club you should come on one of those days wow lady this lord that, more double barrelked names than you can shake a stick at, but soooooo very chilled out and relaxed i cant begin to describe. ISA stuff ive done very very very egeo driven, but also extreammly challangeing and thought provoking, and always hard work on the liver.???? with regard to the couple of comments mad above about the aa consultation for the approved scheme, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess give up 15 mins and have your say, the moor feed back the better, it would be great for the scheme to be more accessable to those who feel it is not. and charter mark, any thing that gets you bett sustainable work cant be al lbad, but some one else said "it easier than the aa sceme" so it cant be the same ....... finally thanks for reading all my words, i hope ive given a balanced opinion here and hope that my opinion of you get out what you put in has carried through. nothings perfect not lest of all the aa, or isa or rfs but why not try to make them a little better and put in alittle of the overweling skill that exists on this site cheers all kev

alex just pop down the shop in needham market £40 an hour inc vat and miinor repairs. well be happy to help. as for why, for get all the youll get done your insurace wont pay out , its the law arguments as they go round and round, quite simpley farmiliarity blindness means you will get used to certain things and most people will let them slid untill they cause an accident, so is simpley about making sure fresh eyes double cheak what you know about your stuff and make sure you have not missed anything so that you go home in one peice kev
  23. thats the point really you are what you are one mans meat is anothermans poisen so no one should think any less of a climber who does not like mewps or a mewp user who does not like climbing i was one time told bu a guy he would never do my job, this was a good 22 yrs ago, in conversation it transpired that he put the pins in tower crane booms as they self built to secure it in place, we agreed we would not swop!!! cheers kev
  24. this discussion is fun to read, is you whant to see why MEWPS can be efficient, look at utility LV gangs who cut several K of LV line in a day, many many many trees, were even the ardiest climber would struggel to keep up day after day after day. its been said already MEWPS are a tool, like a crane , like a chain saw, like a hi-ab etc etc, where they make a job significantly safer, or moor efficent and cost effective to a poinr (cost v saftey) the y should be used. as for driving one 120' in the air tell ya what its thrilling!!!!! the case sigted is incredibly sad but is indeed MEWP 101, the ground must be appropriate to the mewp !!! know ya MEWP know your ground (70s tractor rip off) it is very sad for any life to be taken premiturley. if you are going to hire a mewp dont be afraid to ask the ycompany for site visit or advise on model, most decent companies will help, As a finish, i love climbing trees, i love usng mewps, i love driving tractors, adore single feling big trees, thrill to the challenge of working with a crane, am entised by the challange of felling big trees with small saws, and buzz to get out the big saw and go to town, but i really chilll out planting trees and do some of my best thining sat on a ride on mower cutting failds of grass, in short i love my job, but like to think im open minded enough to try anything and keep it in my tool box for when it will come in to its own. stay safe, work with your brain not your ego so that you can go home safe to the ones that love you in the same state they entrusted you to the world at the begging of the day kev
  25. all the questions you ask should be answered on the cource, bob has posted a nptc sheduel, have a look through it, and make sure your instructor covers every single bit of it. if they dont ask, dont be afaid to ask, and if you dont understand dont be afraid to ask. and if you feel you need more practice before your test dont be afraid to ask to haev the test a little while after the training. relaxt, ensure your saw is good sharp has a good bar n sproket on it. and enjoy, keep it simple and listen for the crack as the hinge gives, ohh yes also dont think you need the biggest slege hammer, to drive the wedges home, and althogh the standard hi lift wedges are good make sure you get a zink sold wedge in your kit as they are the box delux for those hard to drive over trees. cheers
