  1. ohh what fun we regually have road closures and permits. the indirect reson that we pay now is the relitive reduction of direct taxasion that used to feed loacal councils, accross all departments. i spent many years in loacl government and my other halsf still works in the HW dept of our local council. now a few years since i left the council but the money they actually get from centeral government is reduced by about 40% of what they used to recive, but imbedded in legislation is the councils need to deliver moor services. then when we get on road closures we have a government that haas enacted moore legislation not only NRSWA but also Road works regs and acts that require more training and give leave to councils to charge were appropriate. so permits have been arround for many many years, if you have ever dealt with skips you will know that, its part of a process to help you but also to ensure that if your machine buggers up the road serface the council know who to charge, why do they chare so much now ... see above less money than ever going in to LA. we have a job next week with some big minging oaks and a bronto 20m the road closure is 1400, that is the 400 to the council thae adds in papers and parish boards, the leason information whitch telsl things like the local radio the guys who have to prepair all the plans to conform to the traffic managment act, the guys who put out the signes, barriers etc, travel round monitoring the signes and then collect them in at the end of the day. with all of this it has turned a 2.5k job in to a 4k job, so as long as you can get the money on a job its oki but not always possible. so inshort price it up before giving the price cheers all kev

  3. in one way no in another way yes................................... to me the interesting thing is wether or not the 'celebriaty arborist' is a.. a member of any organisasion b... doing the industry a favour by becomming a celebriaty ie making it better known. in a way it reminds me of when ocallerhan assosiates were first rising to the fore, they had 10 years of real celebriaty status, making tree officers arround the country hate them for there tactics but ultimatley for all there attrakted dilike they did the industry a good turn. they made LA officers pic up their game and forced them in to corners where they then had to addreesss there short commings... so now about 15-20 years on there are many other companies doing good work they whent to oca and now landscape partnership and we weight for the next oca to give us a shake another thought has just struck me is fame sort or found when you have a good idear to share...... discusss cheers all arbocop ps hi to all those who did not come over at capel and say hello and also what else do you mean by your last sentence........... as for any body talking to another body that can only surly be a good thing through what vever portal...
  4. what ohh chaps and chapesses how are we all?? Mamut make good rope, so do edelrid and a number of others including beal, there are a couple of things hear, the point MARC makes is spot on, that is the elongation of circa 3% is corretc for 'low stretch ropes' whitch are what we all climb on there are a couple of ce marks for it one industrial one sport both very similar. i have an edelrid and a beal that i se for access and rescue, but not genneral tree climbing as the point bob makes is spot on. thes ropes are largly designed to work with 'gear' not jus friction nots, they also do not have good abrasion properties like tree climbing rope. so if it is ce1891 its fine for work but you will find it will not behave or wear well. just as case and point, beal make a very commonlu used rope in rope access called antiperdies, good standard stuff, they then tryed making boba and bonsi as tree climbing rope, both 1891 standard, both pass the same knotability abrasion and strength tests but there tree ropes are not good at all. this is because the recognise the wear dirt etc they are exposed to are differant in trees and tryed to componsate. so legally there is nothing to stop you directly as long as it is 1891 standard but you will probably end up bying moor rope than if you had bough a proper rope. as for the comment about being taught the differance of rope on a NPTC cource all that is expected is knowing about what is fit for purpose ie the CE marking and some rope terms hope that helps kevin

One thing guys all air ambulances in the UK are charaties, funded by donation. when ever you hear things like this makes you think of putting your hand in your pocket even if only a few pennies as you never know when you a mate or a loved one may need one i do a couple of charity bike rides n stuff for our one kev

  11. hi gang there was a comment erlierabout not covering this on the rfs, well the sylibus says you should, but it is oftern skirted over as it is a damm hard bit of law. in a nut shell you have wild life & country side, Country side and rights of way and more recently the habitat regs the offence is reclessly disturb destroy bla bla bla, and really it covers every thing birds bats etc, but there are a number of species identified as 'pests' ummmmm and the thing about them is the by felling the tree with out the land owners permison is were things go wrong. we are in the middle of training all our cutter basic ecoligy law and ident of key species that will get you in big trouble. you will find that your local defra office will always help with advice but remember the offence hingies on recless... and another ps squirells and peogions are 'pests' but breed all year round be carful have permission, do it right kev

  13. as f0or trainers up your way the only 2 people i know are paul hanson, very very thorough guy at arborinternational, but i think he is giving up training, and of cource the guys at SAC cheers
  14. hello all Just poping by the lagal stance for age on using a chain saw is currently 'minimum school leaver age' right now that is 16. but note those kids that started secondry school this year will not leave now untill they are 17, so in so unless the guidance is rewritten 2014 that age will jump to 17. you may be aware that some kids do leave school earlier but they are under special training schemes and they officially do not leav full time ed untill 16 so answer yep at 16 he can train, as a note though MHASR will require the trainer to specifically concider his age in a risk assessment, and some training centers may ask for a ref before thay take him to assessess his maturity. another not for you as he is under 18 a copy of the risk assessment must be made availible to his parants/gaurduians should they wish to recive it. you see peole think the up front bit of training is easy but the mire of all this stuff in the background makes me go gray....... cheers all as ever happy to help kev
  15. a subtle balance between experiance, youth, knolege,respuct,knowlege understanding, an ability to learn, to free think, to take orders, to give orders, to accept when they were wrong, and stand firm when they know with all that is mighty they are right, to listen to their peirs there equals and their subordinates, and not be afraid to speak back, to understand they are not automatically worth 2 grand a day, but what they can ern, to take responibilities for their action and treat a team as an equal, to take critisizum with honour and give it out with respect,phisical stength, ajility and stamina, the ability to use langwide with customers that does not envolve F SH or C as a noun and pro noun a balance between arrogance and humbleness.... and mix all of that together with a bit of natural ability, taught knowleg and gained experiance, add a pinch of wife, mortgage and kids hay presto. the down side is when you get that gal or guy they ether go for 50p an hour moor, go and set up fpr them selves or you promote them to a manager.........

Khriss its a fair point but the stats dont back it up front and rear low down but the type b trouser is all wrong pressure on the bsi ill try and keep peope up to date wit h all this if any of you employepeople you may be interested to know that the disaplinery procedure has just changed too kev
  17. back well to start im quite busy in the AA, and there are anumber of peope there who do care about the cutting edge of arb, but also as a body thay do a lot of political work, not every ones cup of tea but needs to be done none the less, i also know there are people on hear who sit on the TTWG and AFAG groups so they are a rround but just keeping there head down, there choise. as for me about 2 years ago the aa started talking about how certification can be moved on and looked at tearied systems measuring performance and experiance and assessmnet ok key stages, alas, it all fell over when we got to the who assesses the assessor, and who assesses the assesors assesor etc etc....if we keep the presure up it will happen. of cource there is the nvq rought that works on a lot of these premises, alas the stumbeling block of that is that to get parts of the nvq you need certain nptc certs@?? as i final thing arround this thread, im a stanch supported of education etc, and in many ways the nptc system works, but it is only a level 2 and the use of advanced in some of the litriture is very very missleading cheers kev

Hi frank as with so much its as clear as mud and should you have an accident in a type would your RA have been suitable and suffichent. the real answer is not this afag but is to lobby ypur MEP, the BSI etc to get the ppe standard amended to make type b moor like the sip freedoms, good protection where it counts, but allows good movment thoughts kev

  20. hello guys im back after a couple of days out Who reps some of the other bodies on arb talk, well there are alot of people on hear who sit at regional and national level on at least one of those , the AA that i know of, who dont advertise it for some of the resons mentioned above and also because they are interested in what is really being said, not what people think they whant to hear. but this is not an outing forum so mums the word....... i see this thread is still going strong and ive just re read it all through and the thing that strikes me having gone through it all is that the main objection seems to be there is no recognition of time served it is all ciclicle and that is the main stumbeling block. prehaps if the good people hear , and all those interested parties keep bashing that message over and over, that and this is my opinion it must be a mix of experiance, formal training, tested knowlege and that must be based on an auditable trail of evidence. does that sound right?????? well if so ill tell you alittle suprise in a bit heheheheh cheers all kev

  22. mr ed i salute you, and if you can support the industry with free training great. as for the quote 'those that can.....' when ever i hear that mentioned i usually quote “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena" im the man in the arena hear, and what shames me the most is not the debate and opinion, the name calling and the barrackins the questioning of peoples stand point that is healthy and that is what this site thrives on but is the fact there are many other trainers on this site and also assessors, who dont stick there head above the parapit during chats like this to be counted. ho humm i think at this point ill exit this debate and let you know how i get on sorting a vidio cheers all dont forget shout at NPTC you have untill the 16th kev
  23. for all of you who are unhappy with the proposals or wording of them i implore you to let the nptc know. if they dont know your feelings they cant consider them, even over something as simple as a single word.
  24. RCO et al thanks for the offer Macclesfeild a bit of a jaunt for me, but im not afraid to chip in on a days work. dont expect the fitness of a 20 year old that does phisical work every day, how about i have a chat with a more local firm and we try and do some thing with them?? kev
  25. nailer keeping records of all you do is cpd , and could count towards update training. keep records of what you do and with who is omportant at the end of the day the mesure of any training weather update or innisial training is what you do with it if you look at afag 805 it does give guidance on non lantra nptc training. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/afag805.pdf kev
