conkers i agree and i dissagree there will always be local variance, but as stated erlier by another party you can be a busy fool, it was always told to me that any one can work for nothing know your local market, know your costs and as you say see if it is worth wile cheers
  4. great pic did you see the guy or find the pic????
  5. yes the angle of the rope is proportional to the reative load exerted on the anchor. if x is the internal angle of the rope passing through the pully or scrotch an T is the load exerted by whatever you are using to pull the formular is 2Tcosx. thats it break out the calculators, just remember that if internal angle is 0 deg ie strait up and down like a rigging block then the reaction at the apex of the block is x2 if the internal angle is 90 degrees then the reaction is 141 % or x1.41 about....... we could get really anal about this but that is on a static falcrum cos if you do sky lines something even wearder happends. when people do loler inspector cources they need to have a basic understanding of some of these basic principals or leverage and movment, also when doing rigging and sky line training as it is very easy to magnify forces to a deadly level hope it helps haqppy christmas kevin
  6. oops seem to have got lines a bit muddeled but i hope it makes sence
  7. wow mate that really sucks alas it is becoming more and more common in this litigasious society we live in what can i get for nothing. count your lucky stars that you have a connection in the legal world, i would suggest that in such a situatio you hold off telling insurace a s the moment they have the hint of a claim they start loading your policy. ility for who is the tree owner/responcible for issuing work just a nightmare at least you have good records of what was done and who paid, the other thing about it is it drives home why more and more people ask for written confirmation of aceptance of quote, and one of the recomendations made to arb assosiation aproved contractors is to put on Ts and Cs that people need to understand there liabilites, what happens if heavy tree work is done and responcib
  8. the 2 issues with the pic on the front of the guid are one to illistrate that there are safe systems by which on person may be within the 5m recomendation laid down by afag when using a chain saw, and two the mewp in use is significatly capable of going higer than 26m wich is a cut off point for many certifications ergo the cutter pictured holds mewp tickets but not for the size of machine in use cheers kev
  9. you cant teach experiance only gain it and learn from those who have messed up befor you. so great idear very forwad thinking
  10. tribal, the arborist equipment book give an interesting insite in to kit development in the states if you read it. also dig out some of the old classic books like brigmens tree surgery. if you are a member of the rfs you do get use of the libary at tring, so you could go in there and have a look. also the FC papers arb reserch notes from alis holt would be interesting to go over, and if you are a member of the AA, they hold a copy of all the old news letters and jornals, you can arrange to go there and go through them, that would be fun if you had the time. hope those sugegstions help. o and if you are any good you can go through all my old papers mags etc since orriginal colleg notes and sort from 84 on!!! one last through, last year merris wood had a birthday and andy down there put a lot of stuff together he may have soem info hope that helps kev
  11. just what jamie said and if you are off climbing do exactly the same
  12. fomes no doubt. brave fell!!! even braver if you climbed it
  13. just a little point the weight refered to is the potensial weight not the actual weight. look at the vin plate for your l200 NOT owners manual, there will be 3 numbers with kg after them the big number is the MAM maximum authorised mass aka gross train weight, in other words the truck whats on the back and the trailers potensial. if you look at the trails vin plate it will tell you the gross weight, that is the number you work with the big one wehther it is loaded or not. also there is gennerally no legal weight ratio on b class tow rigs but there is common sence, and be causiose how you load the chipper on the trailer as it is still possible to be 'overloaded' as trailers and pic up hitches have 'nose weights', if you put the chipper too far forward so the weight bears down you may overload the nose weight and visa versa if too far back not an overload isssue, but a poor loaded offence same as if you dont rope a load on. for those of us who live in essexd we have for many years now had some of the most anal, petty, small minded juped up over qualified traffic coppers who spend too much time on telly and not enough time doing the job, and if you drive anything that looks like you are unusual they will pull you and rip you to shreds then of cource add in vosa and customs both having big offices in the region and god help us all kev

guys lets be a little bit moor pragmatic what is there wage what is your insurance on cost devided by about 220 days worked same with fleet deprciation, tax on cost at about 3%, fuel cost plant and machinery planned running costs, actual runing cost, training and update costs, etc, pension con trib if you do as an employer, o the yard of cource, the waste carriers reg fee, bit like university challange trying to remember all this lot, well you get the idear, take this mean cost devide by actual days worked c.210-215 add profit margine your choise then thatas your answer, personally i would whant £250 a bloke, but ive found its easier to get that in a 2 man gang and with 3 you have to fight for it a little moor, but alas i know people charging out a lot less. but at the end of the day as said befor you get what you can and some jobs you will get moor than others. kev
  15. a quick one for sky huck. nope it does not mean that those who have not had formal training are crap, your words your opinion. my opinion is that unless you experiance those arears formal informal and experiance you may never be all you can be. that does not mean you are crap cheers all merry christmas kevin
  16. ahh just noticed my last link did not show up follow this quite a big pdf enjoy get the old scientific calculators out http://www.forestry.gov.uk/PDF/fctg001.pdf/$FILE/fctg001.pdf cheers all kevin
  17. so we have had 3 makes so ar the stilth the orogon and the huski/jonsored that i think is made by nordtec any one use any others????
  18. weired ive had a few huski cans over the years and one stil can, i hated the stilth one wrong shape too bi and dripping spouts nordtec for me plese
  19. I will break my silence now i think i wont say too much as the assement is between cern and i and it is not my place to discuss his performance. what i will say is cern had worked hard at the theory parts of the assessment and presented that information well. it was clear from his overall performace that what he does need is experiance with a mentor to help him plan ahad a little and not make those silly little mistakes. as an assessor it is part of the job to identify errors that are of significance and those that are just doen to nervs, cern was indeed very nervouse as are many people who come for assessment. cern had had college training and topped up with a little direct training fom one of the BTS training team which i think he will agree helped. all i would say now is formal training, on the job training and experiance a mixture of all is what you need to become all you can, no one alone will deliver that. well done. regards kevin
  20. wow wee thats a big one, alas the simple answer is not that, as you need to make allowances for how many wraps there are on the drum of the winch, the moore there are the less efficheant, abut a 5% to 10% loss on each pass throufh a sheaving due to friction, a resistance allowance in referance to the slope of 1 per 1 degree of slope up to 54 degress where is maxes out, use a low anchor piont on the wicn as when pulling up hill funky things happen to the vector of force on the tractoee that can cause premetur rearing etc ohh it goes on and on, there is a really good book ohn the subject if you have about 400 quid, or you could just hook up and see hehehehehe seriosly look hear http://hse.gov.uk/pubns/afag502.pdf and http://hse.gov.uk/pubns/afag703.pdf and
  21. you know chaps if we added up how much it has cost us in time debating this matter, then it will come to a lot moor than 150 quid, frankly i hate loop holes and get out when all we are talking about is regestering where you dispose of your rubbish, we all like to bleat on about pikes, and cowboys, moan about fly tipping and berrate the gennera lpopulus that just dont know how to do things, well the thing that helps us hold our head about the parapit and say look at me i am better than them is a genneral ability to prove we are, like im not afraid to say were my waste is tipped. for all of the pros and cons the is it waste or not i just cantbe bothered any moor to worry about it 50 quid a year, as nike say just do it hate mail on a post card to arbocop c/O arbtalk cheers all kev
  22. just to throw a stone in the works class 3 ppe is also used to describe any ppe that if it were to fail would lead to death or seriouse injury . as for class 3 in terms of its speed i dont recall ever having seen any class 3??? i think my orriginal pair may have made that grade as they did contain 'kevlar' but it was a solid sheet slid in to a pocet in normal trouseres we had 4 pocets and 2 pads hehehehehe and boy it was a pile of pants cheers kevin
  23. 75 cm bee line on hi vee safty blue same on tachion using a prussic thats name escapes me at the mo black and red sheeth
  24. i love my huski ground saws and really whant to love the top handled saw but i just cant keep reaching for the ms200t. i know for a fact that the prices on spares for the huski are higher than the stilth. in the early days were i worked ran a lot of dolmars and a few huski, dolmar is now makita nad ive trialed a cpl of makita and they are quite good especially the slightly larger sizes although a bit weighty and if they go on as long as the old dolmars did then great. worst saw would be a ronin a mate had from bnq as the thing would not even start, and a mcollock so plastic just kept breaking and bending it hope that helps arbocop
  25. in the erlier post jonesie made he said a chin strap strength of DN and i think he did his maths wrong. also i had said that p think as ther petzle n stein are similar prace the petzle lid is stronger with a better cradel thicker plastic a slightly better buld/engeneering bits to it, but i do prefer the comfort of the stien (i keep calling it a KASK as they are the manufacturer who are based in italy) cheers
