  1. I was in Belize, sunbathing whilst on 'hurricane alert'.....!
  2. I think things ARE on the up. keep grafting fella's...I've nearly paid off what I owe after half a year of scratching about
  3. absolutely!....the man being court-martialled should be the idiot filming stuff like this. signed and 100% back up from me...'Per mare per terram'!
  4. get rid of him for good. He's a waster and your lucky not to have been burdened some serious trouble/injury or worse of his making. Theres plenty of good lads out there.
  5. good post!. It depends on the person. I know some people who've been climbing arbs for years and they still can't cut the mustard!. On the other hand, I've met some lads who walk into the job and are an instant asset and are great to have on site. I think the best way to get experience is to work for a big firm during the week, doing treework day in day out but do your own work at weekends. There are some aspects of the job that you have to learn by being in the deep end.
  6. CS30, 38, over 25, clean driving licence. good rates for the right person. Work for 2-3 days a week at moment, but more as things pick up. PM Spike for details
  7. I had a second hand Stihl 020av. Blinding little saw with plenty of grunt...until you got it wet, then it conked out for the day!

    9/11

one of those moments in history that will never be forgotten. Such a simple, but devastating attack on the most powerful nation on the planet. The people who carried out this attack set in motion events that have cost thousands of lives. I remember thinking...someones going to pay for this ten times over.....time to get the big stick out....
  9. yes. just crack on and get paid. Goretex till endex
  10. yes, the money is crap. I see it from both sides as I am an employer and an employee (albeit a freelance one). The problem is the cost of living has rocketed and we are earning wages that are low because there are too many of us chasing the same work...'cor blimey, don't you know theres a recession on?'...its largely a self inflicted injury..the answer is...become a plumber or a sparks
  11. natural selection at work..where's the quick clot?
  12. best thing to do at mo?...get a mon to fri job and suck up the wages...get a trailer, get out on saturday and do some PJ's. When things pick up, you can think about going freelance or having your own set-up. Good luck fella!
  13. Ophelia Love-Truncheon
  14. I can't believe they didn't put me in the credits!
  15. 'I only know one person with a pony tail and he's a martial arts expert, so I think pony tails rock (-;' not a grappling art then?..long hair is always good for a takedown!... I saw a fella on the tube once..sprinting to get on the train before it went, he jumped in and his pony tail got stuck in the doors...he went all the way to the next stop with his head pulled against the door rubbers at 45 degrees while I laughed until I did a small wee!
  16. I've got a mate who's a first aid trainer. He's an ex Parachute Regiment Sgt Major - know's his stuff and can tailor courses to meet our needs...and he doesn't mind travelling. His name is Rob Willis linky; [email protected],.uk 01255 424537 07553 371304 make first aid relevant and interesting..there's nothing worse than death by viewfoil and triangular bandage!
  17. ponytail?...tragic...but chipper feedrollers love em!
  18. me too treequip!...I've always found coiling up throwline is a waste of time...it just develops a memory and tangles up as soon as you look at it. In a bag is the way, and take it all out and stretch it before use...sorted
  19. another factor to consider, is the rise of the self-employed groundie. 10 or 15 years ago, groundies were generally on the cards and the only self-employed lads were climbers. In this area in particular, there are loads of blokes working on the ground on a s/e basis, no sick pay, holiday pay and no overtime. They are just employed on a casual basis and most have no tickets. Some of these guys are using saws and felling and a good few are climbing here and there too. Rates of pay are pretty tough at the moment, most of these blokes should be on the cards and are not and are earning £40 to £60 a day.
  20. does anybody have any idea what this is?...I've been sent this pics and I have no idea what this is
  21. yes mate
  22. I think its a good idea Rick!...why not start by just having a networking thing so ex-servicemen can help guys who are just getting out?. Lots of ex-military blokes in treework and lots of treework blokes that value ex-servicemen as employees...'ad unum omnes!'
  23. I dead wooded that oak!
  24. as a freelancer, I've never worked for a company that practices aerial rescue . Most people practice once every 5 years, if they do refresher training!. Most groundies I work with would not have the ability to carry one out anyway, lets face it, if your onsite and your the only climber..if you needed to be rescued your chances would be slim.
  25. £100 a day for a s/e groundie with cs30, 31 and 38 and driving + trailer licence. On the other hand, young, keen brush-rat who can graft and is eager to learn - £50 to £60 a day, somewhere in between...£80 a day and all the woodchip they can eat.... Good groundies are rare beasts and are undervalued, a dependable, trustworthy bloke on the ground, who can look out for you up the tree, mind your ropes, rig and think for himself is worth keeping hold of.
