  1. As a freelancer who also does my own work, I use a variety of 2 stroke mixes in my fuel, depending on whose fuel I'm sticking in the saws. I've found that MS200T's and 201T's take pretty much any mix. My Huskys are hard to start when I use the normal Stihl red 2 stroke, so I only use my own low-smoke. A while back, I used to use one companies Aspen fuel frequently without any probs, today I put it in my 201T and it ran like a dog!. Any changes in the content of Aspen or is my say just being a fussy bitch?
  2. I reckon £200-250. Great little saw, mines still going strong after a previous life as a 200T As aside, has anyone tried the MS201 backhandle?
  3. confession time....many years ago I had an 'extra' on a job I was doing, it was a clear fell of a medium sized Birch. I phoned the LA and got the all clear and the tree was on the deck before the call was finished. The lady's hubby then came home from work and asked about felling a large Oak in the front garden. Again, I phoned the LA and got a different tree officer, he informed me that the Oak was not TPO'd, but that everything in the back garden was , I was sitting on the birch logs in the trailer as I made the call!...nothing came of it, but sometimes tree officers can make mistakes too!
  4. sounds like you need a harness with a seat mate. I can't wear leg loop only harnesses at all. I've tried, but my gonads can't take it!. Try a Sequoia swing, Dragonfly or Austria duo - with seats.
  5. I gave it a bit of a tweak last year after it was run in, but its fine when its been running for a couple of minutes. I've gone over to a 14" bar and Oregon 91vs chain, the extra grunt means I've been using a groundsaw less in bigger wood by using reducing cuts.
  6. I've found the 201t generally, needs a bit more cleaning than its predecessor. It doesn't put up with quite as much neglect !. I have to keep mine cleaner to keep it oiling properly for a start. The only exception to this is the air-filter, which is open to wonderful amounts of abuse
  7. I've been using a 201t for 1 year now. I like the saw and find it an improvement on the 200t. The differences are not massive however, as has been said, less fuel used (less stops to refuel), less vibration and I find it has a bit more power in big wood (although others have said it has less!). Down side, pick up is slightly slower - a small price to pay compared to having to change the piston pump twice a year on my 200...I tend to flick the choke a bit till it warms up...no great drama. The bottom line is, the MS201t meets the new emission levels set by Brussels, thats why they bought the saw out..not to make a radical improvement on the existing design. All you guys waiting for the super-duper Husky climbing saw...don't hold your breath...all past offerings have been about as much use as wing-mirrors on a submarine
  8. well done fella's..good work and a noble cause
  9. I prefer 'traditionalist'....sprog....BIG sprog!
  10. me too stubby...it ain't gonna break the piggy bank!
  11. 'I think I will also be on duty that day as carer for Geoff and Arbogrunt. '...call me old fashioned Felix, but I interpret that as 'I'm going to be Geoff and Spikes beer-bitch for the day' I've got a few bits of kit on their last legs, but, as I was skint for the AA show I had to work instead, so this one is a must. Can we camp up there as I fancy sitting round a fire, crackin' a few ales and arbor-waffling with a few fellow treegeeks this year?
  12. nice table slackbladder!
  13. Sounds great mate. I don't know about Italian regs, but I have done a bit of work in SW France.....they don't worry about any regulation at all there!. I would just treat work as you do in the UK. Have someone aerial rescue trained on the ground (even if you have to train them yourself) and make sure you know where you are and how to contact the emergency service...in Italian (maybe write it down on a sheet of paper with your risk assessment). Go for it mate and have a good one!
  14. Lots of good points here. Its hard enough in any trade at the moment. I'm setting up for the second time after 10 years of freelancing and its MUCH harder to get going than last time. I put this down primarily to the long, drawn out recession and the fact that there are a lot more people doing treework now. Some of them around here do a great job for a sensible price, some do a great job for peanuts....and some are just chancers who lop and top and do massive amounts of cheap, fast work to a very low standard to make up their money. I've got to the stage where I'd rather have a day off and earn nothing than rush a job and work till seven a night trying to compete with this lot...and I'm happier for it! I'll do it my way and stay in 'survival mode' till the economy picks up....its not the first time I've bitten the bullet, but this time I'm way more chilled out about it!
  15. Can't compete with that Ped..so don't!. I've got myself into a 'take it or leave it' state of mind when quoting nowadays.
  16. I had a similar drama with my disco commercial, my existing insurer said they wouldn't touch it and I got some stupid quotes from a few other companies. I ended up with Adrian Flux and got a reasonable quote from them. All for the sake of a winch, a 2" lift, bashplate etc
  17. ...not being a terrorist, peado, criminal or perv myself, I'm not bothered about people like this being put under surveillance. Thanks for the heads up, but I won't be signing...
  18. I wouldnt bother mate, once they've gone they'll keep coming off, they'll only try and glue on a moulded sole. Haix ain't wot they used to be...bin 'em and buy some Meindl's
  19. My 2 younger ones, I belay them from the ground after first setting a the rope through a cambium saver. That way they can concentrate on climbing the tree and I've got the rope for protection. I can direct them from the ground and also I can let them 'abseil' back down, or lower them when they want to come down, with me in control. thats what I do with my little girl. I also find, if I put a rope-guide in, I can help pull her up from the ground, she's on a blakes-hitch. I'm putting my 16 year old twins through their CS38 next month...no belaying for those two!
  20. I'm sure you sharpening is spot on mate!..not directed at you but at the bloke whining about the Jubilee!

    cheers,

    Spike

  21. ...Stevie thought that was Tom Jones
  22. Madness playing on the roof of Buck-House!...who would have ever believed it....thumbup: 'Ones house, in the middle of Ones street'... ha ha!
  23. erm, yeah...what yours sharpening like?
  24. fair one Ped, totally agree. Sadly, too many firms just get good climbers in and use and abuse them, make them do 2 days work in one day, then begrudge paying diesel money. I'm very careful who I work for these days. Worked for a bloke recently who just kept adding jobs on to the day as I was getting through the work. Late finish in the pouring rain. He's not on my list anymore!. Now I'm thinking of charging £20/hour for being on site after 1600. I always pay my lads extra for the occasional late one (can't be helped sometimes). Its really putting me off freelancing.
  25. I'm British...I'm not weak. Think of that choir singing in the pouring rain for the Queen yesterday. Thats the whole of the UK. One day it'll stop raining but we'll still be singing. Shut the door on the way out pal.. ...In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy seeing the country and the Commonwealth celebrating the Diamond Jubilee together, whatever colour, creed or religion they are
