  1. You've got to admit, he had some 'stones' hitting a bloke with a running chainsaw in his hands!...thankfully I was in a good stance of this could have been a 'old codger decapitates tree-feller - or the other way round' thread!. We had a laugh about it later. Had he been a younger man, I would have chinned him of course!
  2. ha ha!...all's well that ends well...miserable old git or what?!
  3. had an odd one today. Having been told by the customer that it was ok to clear fell a couple of sycamore into a derelict garden, I duly dropped both and started processing them. I was cross-cutting one of the trunks, when I was struck blow between the shoulder blades, needless to say, with a 357XP at full bore..it made me jump!. I assumed I had been hit by a hanger from a neighbouring tree, but when I looked behind me, there was an extremely irate pensioner telling me 'your trespassing on my land, foxtrot off!'. In the end he was happy to keep all the log and the brash went on his bonfire pile!. Thankfully neither of us ended up on the business end of the saw
  4. check out those basal cavities!
  5. I love mine and its got the added bonus of fitting nicely in my Landie
  6. I'd never heard of the Lancastria incident. It would have been a shattering blow to morale, which probably explains why it was kept quiet and then forgotten. We would have done exactly the same to a German troopship of course.....the tragedy of war.
  7. always a written quote on carbonised, letterheaded paper with a card. Mostly there and then during the consultation, but for bigger jobs, risk assessment/job sheet on site and quote prepared at home and emailed/posted. I can't remember what I did yesterday...got to write everything down!
  8. a series 2a Landie pickup and a dodgy 8' trailer, a second hand 020AV, a 25m length of discarded Army abseil rope and a Willans T22..how I survived that lot I don't know!
  9. a couple of small scars and deaf as a post...not bad for 48 I reckon!
  10. These sort of blokes get the 'DCM' here....'don't come monday'....
  11. I would recommend getting in touch with your local wildlife trust...but be prepared to put time in and not get paid for it!
  12. 'I think of it as a really attractive girl with webbed toes - yeah its a pitfall - but would you kick her out of bed?'...are you from Norfolk then mate?
  13. CS38 is what you want mate
  14. lets hope the time we do find WMD's they are not being set off in our cities. When we pull out of Afghan in a couple of years time, we will leave bases there, just as in Iraq. They will continue to attack of course, but the fighting will just move to another place...a bit nearer to home. This lot are in it to win it, they are dedicated and want to fight us anywhere they can... there's only one acceptable outcome for them. We are not fighting them out of choice. Its would be great to just walk away from it all and for everything to be 'happy ever after', but that is not going to happen. Its going to be a long, hard fight that we cannot and will not lose....the UK is yet to take a really bad hit, when we do, attitudes will harden up a bit and the gloves will come off. A sad eventuality.
  15. 020 on the ground?!!!!!!...OMG..take him away!
  16. 'you MUST BE insured with public liability!! '.....,I don't get this either, whoever is the contractor is responsible for PL, any freelance staff work under that insurance.
  17. I always find it odd that insurance companies will insure anyone doing treework...whether they are qualified or not, with tickets or without. Seems a bit daft really. I guess they are a business in the end and will take anybodies money!
  18. thats YOUR business cards mate..they do go a bit soggy tho
  19. Its depressing reading Dean. Where has our society gone so wrong that lads like this can be so disrespectful to our old vets?. That said, there will always be elements of society that live by preying on those weaker than themselves..what goes around comes around..they will get theirs one day.
  20. Hmmm, some pretty cheap insurance on here!..you pay for what you get. I know a bloke who swapped insurance companies and got a much cheaper premium. He got all his saws etc stolen and when he claimed, he didn't get 'new for old' and ended up replacing less than half of what was stolen. When it comes to PL if you've got a 5m height restriction...they will not pay out on anything bigger than a bonsai tree!. Lots of firms using landscapers insurance around here and claiming to be 'fully insured', thats why I laminate my insurance certificate and show customers when I quote....I pay enough for it after all.
  21. thanks Rupe....paperwork......get me back up a tree!
  22. 'european harmonisation'?...sounds like a posh description of 'Blitzkrieg' to me!
  23. I love my grillon, best thing ever for getting a good work position. The rope itself is a rip off. Buy a good length of 10mm Beal Antipodes and cut yourself one with a couple of fishermans knots in each end. You can make it as long or as short as you like.
  24. someone is making a killing!...its all down to greed. The Oil companies are making massive profits, the Govt are raking in 85% or the price per litre in tax, the tanker drivers, stirred up by the bolshie unions, are demanding a 14% pay rise while the rest of us are working our guts out in a recession. GREED!
