First of all thanks for posting.You stuck your neck out on that job as well as lined yourself up for some abuse from folks on here. I know I have cocked up numerous jobs in the past,its all part of the learning curve. Crane companies have only once sent out a rep when I have booked a Crane.I have worked with cranes for ten years in five countries.Where you were having to set the legs made balancing the picks close to impossible.Consider the Jib next time,even just 500Kg would have been enough for the picks I saw on the Vid. Long story short,thanks for having the guts to show us the Video.

As far as I remember I Chain does not store Energy like a Wire Rope or Strop does.So if a tensioned Chain breaks,it will just fall to the ground. However when a Chain Breaks it can fragment,sending peices of sharp Steel flying.

I reckon it could in theory,but I think the Tree despite its defects would have been subjected to more stress in the form of wind loading than what force would be applied to the stem from the Top going out. When I am topping out the dodgy ones,I put my back cut under the level of the face cut,then once the top is committed I keep cutting.It reduces the ammount of rearward movment and prevents the hinge hanging on.

I bought from these people:Willkommen bei Unimog-Huber = DER SPEZIALIST FR GEBRAUCHTE UNIMOG UND TEILE! But I found the Mog on Mobile.de I think. I saved about 30% or I got a 30% better Mog for the same price. Outfits like Merex sell only the best machines and have prices to match.There are more than a few sharks about over there,so just make sure you are going over there to see the exact mog they have pictured. I live in Norway,so export was just a 16hour drive back.Any dealer should be able to help you export a Truck.

I bought mine from Germany,there are no shortage of Mogs or Dealers over there. The advantage of buying from a reputable dealer in Germany,especially with the ex German Council Mogs,is that they have been run and maintained by people accustomed to Mogs. I spent more than what I was planning on,but bought a Mog with less than 50K Miles on the clock for a great deal less than what it would have sold for in the UK. Have a look here. I do alot of large Spruce and Fir take downs.So its up to the top,rope in with a Rope guide and then back down to limb the Tree on the way back up. I would like to think 8mm would work in this application.But it sounds like 8mm Static or semi static might work best.

Please explain the "sawing action of it over branches" It is Dynamic,but with it doubled over you only get half the bounce.

Today I was in a Rock Climbing shop,the thin Rope Climbing Rope caught my eye.60 meters of it weighed practically nothing. I wondered how it would perform using it as a Arborist Rope for Tree Removals?I know it would be difficult to grip the the Rope if you had to climb up it,but if you are moving around wearing spikes and using the Rope to support you when working it might be ok. I suppose you would have to use smaller diameter VT Cord,this might accelerate wear. Has anyone tried it?

I really like that crane fed Jensen. For much of the work I do,that machine would be the Mutts Nuts.I often takedown hefty Spruce Trees in places where I could not get a larger machine into.Hand feeding countless Spruce Branches in the Rain is horrible. I have considered putting a grapple on a micro digger,but the Jensen looks much better.I would not need the slew function but its cool all the same. -
Shame about you not wanting a Jensen.There is a genuine front mount one on Earborist. TP´s are good,Farmi 260´s have a good name.Just stay away from the Farmi 140 and 160,I had a 160 and it was a complete waste of money. Apart from the Bearings in the Jensen you have,are there any other issues with it?

I had a problem with Frogs Croaking all night and keeping me awake.So I poured 20L of used Engine oil into the Pond.Worked a Treat,you might want to try the same with the Moles?

Thing is... You will attend courses to get the tickets,but to most employers they mean little more than you know the basics.More importantly you need experiance,years of it in fact before you will even be competent,then depending on your natural ability and how much you are prepared to push yourself you might,might be a good climber. This all depends on getting a job,and without experiance you will be another ticketed novice calling all the firms looking for a job that probably dosn´t exist for someone without experiance. If you are in a position to get free training,train in a feild that has a demand for workers.

This industry is at saturation point with newly qualified climbers,I would strongly consider another career in a industry where there is a demand for new people.After getting yourself into a paid position you could do a few days "on the side" with a Treecrew and see if you like it. Sorry to piddle on your Chips,but now is probably the worst time to get into treework in the last 20 years.

Nope,not had that problem. I preffer Visors,you are never without eye protection as long as you have a Helmet on.Also I have been hit in the face by a few Meteors from Chippers over the years,without a Visor I may not be as dashing and swave like I am today.

High winds would have put more torsional stress on that Tree than any imbalance that section felling it will produce imho.However climbing it would be second to straight felling it from what I can see. Chain and binder a few feet up and dump it.Just don't stand around and watch it go.
