  1. Yep, got Dunsley type C under the HWT, fed by the woodburner. Got an oil boiler on the other side of the system. When the fire is on and the water is up to temp, thermostat cuts out oil boiler aka saves money. In the mornings the boiler does the HW, no need for a fire, if the evenings get nippy - small fire and switch on the central heating pump, again no oil burnt. Its good to get a plumber & sparky that have experience with the kit, saves their time / your money as they work out the unusual but simple set up. Get them to talk you through setting the various thermostats and the relationships between them then you can tweek the temps at which stuff cuts off. Mines saved me 1-2 fills of a 3000 L oil tank per year, but the woodshed has had to double to cope with demand.
  2. Maggie is my better half, she holds down a demanding business consultants job whilst running the household. This covers everything from 0600 drop for our daughters swim trg, managing her ageing mother that lives with us to week long work trips to US, Hong Kong etc. She also manages to put up with my tiredness, disturbing her sleep as I go out at 0400 and my general absence in the name of work or pleasure. Despite all of the above Maggie helps me when I'm going round in circles trying to make big business decisions and makes a fine line in celebration cakes. Facebook - Maggies cakes If I hadn't married her I just be another outdoor instructor doing seasonal work at 40! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. He's on the list, but didn't see him today. Bring the hound to eat the kids, they think they live with big dogs! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Gonna be there with some toys. Looks like a reasonable turn out with axe throwing, pole lathes, super serious felling comp, big biomass kit and the classic burger van. Dead easy to find - junction 41 on M6, follow the yellow sign till you see a field with a big collection of toys. If you turn up before I finish the beers, there'll be one going spare. 5. Cans of pop are good for small cal stuff, otherwise something most folk use/are familiar with. Have a try with a 2L plastic bottle filled with jelly? Might resist enough to get full expansion of the bullet. This is all assuming that you're using an expanding bullet for max effect! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Use slate paddles as top dressing loads round here, they're all rumbled to take the edge off or you will be slicing tyres. They migrate pretty quickly if the surface ain't level and worse if vehicles are on it. Best thing we found for taking the edge off was bigger cobbles and a big pan style cement mixer. You can load by machine then which speeds it right up. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. If you ain't got good forest rds or an owner that doesn't mind the aftermath of bigger machines then the £5 per m3 needs to have the reinstatement costs added. If there are no extra costs to be added and the work goes out at £5/m3 then alpine/alstor ain't the tool for the job. That kind of work ain't my flavour, so no doubt some things about it beyond my ken. Again, horses for courses. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Treedweller, I hear your maths! Here's some factors to add to the mix. No low loader costs / driving between sites, my rig goes behind the 4x4. My rig will do an 8 hr day on 30-40l, no idea how long that'll last in a 110hp rig. Not sure how far £800-£1000 would get you on buying, shifting and working road stone or drains going in. My last job had a 50m "wet spot" that would've probably seen the back of it. Looking for markets for the kit is easy, find small difficult access under managed hardwoods, after that its just breakdowns, timber theft and getting paid you'll have to worry about! 9. TreeAb, The Alstor near me goes out man & machine for £300 per day. My Alpine and trailer goes out for a bit less, especially for longer contracts ie less transport days to work days. For those that think that Alstors/Alpines can only work on grant money, I'd like to see you get a county or tractor/trailer rig up some of the sub 2m wide access routes I've had to use. That said, they'll never shift the volume per hr that a big rig will shift, but they don't need the roads/ reinstatement either. Horses for courses. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  10. Bell them and find a show they're at that you can get to. They do a lot of shows and if you ask they'll probably take the unit you're after to an agreed show. They might do you a show discount and you can take it home on the day! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. http://www.differentbikes.ca/images/uploads/2011_DakineTailgatePad(1).jpg A variation on the above might get you thru the weekend, some wheels off to clear the No. plate and a strap across rear wheels to lock down. Gives you time to buy a longer term fox for the rack option. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. No rack on the cab top? Work nav has one that would be good the kids bikes on cheaper systems or go all out for the Thule system. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. What kind of cover u got on the back? Mountain top covers have there own or see below for direct to C channel. Why not just take a wheel of and pop in the buck? http://www.upcountry4x4.co.uk/nissan_navara/bed-steel-crossbars.asp Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Can u pm me a number I've a mate looking for some of that. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  17. No idea what the originals are, bland, white, no obvious structure and snap easy! Hornbeam would good if you could get a clean grained block, British Trees: Hornbeam
  18. Try looking at these, Vreten 700 Wiemer 5 And there are also some via Riko. I'm in the same boat, looking for a trailer to go behind a bigger hp alpine. If you find any in the 4-5 t range that can have driven wheels I'm interested! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Can you get round the back of the trees in the photo with a winch/tractor? Rig a wire from above leave tight and anchored to various trees. If you want peace of mind about the plate not taking off once the butt is off, cut threads out on the plate and use these to secure the end of the line. Pm me if it doesn't make sense, easier drawn/ talked thru than written! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. Been there! Had a tpo site stopped by a planning officer (no TO in post!) whilst he checked our work. He had great fun in his slip on shoes climbing the stepped limestone embankment in the rain:lol: This guy seems a bit different, wanted lengths of branches post reduction at first. Then quoted 3998:2010 as an argument against 3-4" pruning cuts, I wouldn't mind if there wasn't already a 8-10" topping wound (now decaying). Thanks for the opinions / experience / advice, I'll send him a date with a 0800 start and let him know that it's a 2-3hr job, less if he wants to see more than tidy up!
  21. Anyone experienced the following situation? Reduction on tpo tree has been approved (1-2m). The consent has been conditioned with giving a minimum of 7 days written notice to enable appropriate supervision. I've no prob with the TO checking/ supervising my work, but where do I stand if my scheduling of the work doesn't suit them. Do I have to fit in with them (which if possible I will), or can I notify a date, carry out the operation and they can come along I'd they want to? Cheers Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  23. Use the sleeveless vest on the link, that and neck guard get through most days. If its tipping down a flexothane on top and extra tops like Chris said. If the wet kecks rule is gonna be used we usually work straight thru to lunch and then hang on till we're hacked off, then bail to a pub fire and a decent pint! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. If your gonna import something get these in, I'd be ringing for one before long! http://ecom.toyota-gib.com/images/Database/451.jpg Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. Ms660 with a 25" bar. The bigger stihls tend to get a good pre-loved price.Especially with low hours. Thought of 2nd hand? Less of a hit if you're not going to sell it on soon. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
