  1. Whoa there big boy, had two days off so back to forwarding tomorrow. You sort stu out to come pick up in a couple of days and he'll have full day carting to yours. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Yep, sweet as now, just boxing up 3 x 550 and a 560 to get sorted for the next contract. They're great forestry saws but you can't be rough with them or have them sitting idling, they just won't have it. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. And it's just felled & cut to length circa 300 trees! Only bust an anti vibe mount and spring in 10 days felling. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Which of these is first depends on how you grade them: Forester/Arborist/Logman Deer Manager (small estates & a couple of larger private woods) Estate manager Outdoor safety tech for a training company that uses adventure activities on its programmes. Most important to me is Dad & dog walker Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. Try Clark Mctavish, they've got one that occasionally goes out with operator, circa £300 per day at last experience. http://www.clark-mactavish.co.uk Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. I'm happy to trial it if you want have ago. I've got about another 450 to do on the present site, you can take as much as you can carry at the end of the day, after all they're worth more than money these days😂 Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. If jp's kind offer doesn't work for you, try Ian Taylor http://www.lakelandcoppiceproducts.co.uk He's based in Kendal. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Sustainable woodland is a method of managing the woodland so that it continues to produce useful material in rotation. Look up coppice with standards as an example. A small section of the wood is cut, leaving selected big trees (usually Oak) to grow on to full size timber trees. The others are cut for firewood, hazel rods, charcoal etc. The young trees regrow with multiple stems, so renewing the smaller timber products. The only input from us is the motor manual to cut it and some deer management to protect the regrowth till it gets above browsing height. The time between cuts depends on the species, products wanted and local conditions, but 15-20 years is a rough guide. Seems like the woods have been maintained and become productive aka valuable, under such management systems. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. All I sell out is hardwood, not even bothered trying mixed loads. One of the bigger set ups near us is selling mixed bags and there going well from what i hear, but at £65 a dumpy bag (circa a m3) its good value. My stove gets fed the random split bits, Oak slab from a local mill and what softwood the surgery job turns in. In future I'm gonna stock up on Oak slab and Larch, I've the drying space to get a couple of years ahead for the house. As for clients, trying to get them to stock up in spring / summer is enough of a job, I recon their heads would pop, as would my log round, if I went over to all softwood!
  10. Andy, Did you do the squirrel at Langdale Chase. Roadside between Ambleside and Windermere for those not familiar with it. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Hodge, Looks like your purchase was a stroke of brilliance! Who's looking for cord round ours? Starting cutting yours next week. Sounds like my £45 a ton at rdside is about right. All nice processor size and straight. The oversize (> 14") will go to my pile or the the local mill if they're interested, as the big stuff is all Oak. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. It's been a while since I did a driving test, but I don't remember safe working zones for poles and pylons featuring in it, or environmental protection practices and emergency spillage procedures for that matter. You make your choice and pays your money, or not, as the case may be. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. As with all quals, the problems arise if something goes wrong. Putting aside the FC, EA, Nat. Eng work. If you can't show you've been suitably trained for a piece of kit and there's an investigation (EA ,HSE & Police if it's on the road) when something goes wrong, it ain't gonna help. The training and proof of competence is needed under PUWER and no, the self employed can't dodge it. Gotta say, I learnt a lot from doing my FMO tickets. As well as an aversion to writing big cheques! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Get a Isuzu rodeo, even an old TF will make you realise how pants the Brava was/is. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. My previous Isuzu went to a farming neighbour with 135K on it. It only went because the front diff gave up, so no 4x4. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. Try mark stamper on here, he's up that way, and if he can't he'll know someone that can. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. +1 more for Stanley, try wide mouth flask if food flask doesn't work. I add 1/3 of a can of water to my soup and add a handful of dry pasta to the flask. Cooked and soup thicken by lunchtime. They also come in theft preventing colours😊 Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Try a cheeky £10K and sweeten the deal with a box of beer
  19. I'm with yer Granny, shy bairns get nowt. Its not as if you want it ringed up and taken to the car for nowt, dozen eggs for as much blown poplar as you can shift by the end of the day is deal to me.
  20. Dave, There are a few cuts that you may not have across yet, and as others have said winches etc to restrain plates, hold side bend etc etc. I've a few small ones to do in Windermere, pm me and you can come and see what you think. I'd would be good to get it done as there's some to do in December😳 Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. Way too warm for me mate, I'm in t-shirts till it's frosty, cold n dry no probs. My backs had enough of December rain running down it 45 hrs a week! The search continues! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Found the training site but no sign of a shop / jacket. Looking for a good felling jacket. The theory is if I get a good one, it'll be the driest winter in the Lakes on record😚 Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. http://nrswatrainingcourses.com Try these guys hodge, nearly went on one in Kendal the other year. If you need numbers if be up for it. Do you still need one ticket to set up and another to "supervise"? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. According to those figures I should be getting 2.5 cubic metres of cut logs to a ton of roundwood. My experience suggests otherwise, but then again my FC timber measurement book suggests that only Oak, Beech and Scots Pine are a ton to the cubic metre of solid timber. I understand that a simplified guide to such things is useful to the home/ stove owner, but this has been simplified to the point of being useless! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. Mmmm not so good here. Own water borehole, pumped. Gravity fed oil CH or back boiler, elec pump. Pumped grey water/sewage to septic. Elec cooking. No mob signal, so elec landline. Get cut off at some point most winters, but never felt the need to invest in a gena. What's the ball park for diesel one that would run a house on careful usage? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
